would you or do you live directly across from a school?

I need to make the decision to either take or leave the flat by monday morning..

Flat is directly across the road from a primary school.

Context: Desperate to move away from truly horrendous new neighbour that has made me ill since they moved in just over a year ago, Parking wouldn't be a problem for me as I don't drive, flat is two minutes from my mum's house whereas now I'm over an hour away, Not sure the noise from the school would bother me, thinking it would be much better to hear kids playing than neighbour constantly screaming at her partner when they are both drunk which seems to be 24/7. flat allows pets and I have a cat.

Any problems/issues I might be missing apart from noise and parking?

thanks

I’d take it. I’d say the only issue could be parking which isn’t a problem for you. Listening to children playing is nice I always think.

hjokhjjjkkkd · 28/03/2025 21:41

Only reason I wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole is because I drive and the absolutely nightmare it is trying to get a car past a school at pick up time. If I didn’t drive it wouldn’t put me off at all, might be a bit noisy in playtimes so depends if that would annoy you?

abracadabra1980 · 28/03/2025 21:42

I"d be inclined to take it, too, however parking can be an issue around schools as the PP pointed out. If that's not a problem, happy moving!

underseige05 · 28/03/2025 21:44

I lived a 2 minute walk from a primary school for 9 years. Had no problems with parking really as most parents were considerate. It was nice to hear the children playing out. It sounds like there are definitely more pros than cons.

NorthernLiner · 28/03/2025 21:44

In your scenario, I’d 100% definitely take it.
Children playing is happy sounds, and 2 minutes from your mum is the icing on the cake.
Good luck with the move!

SeLHopeful2024 · 28/03/2025 21:45

My mum has lived opposite a school my whole life.
Only issue really is parking (not an issue for you) over her drive and blocking access.
When I lived a home rubbish being thrown in the garden was common.

I'd say go for it if that's the only reservation.

FacingTheWall · 28/03/2025 21:45

I do. The playground noise doesn’t bother me at all, but I’m a teacher so I can sort of filter it out if I’m actually at home on a school day! It makes for very quiet neighbours three months of the year. Even the parking isn’t that much of an issue.

mnahmnah · 28/03/2025 21:45

Do you work from home? If not, I assume you wouldn’t be there in school hours.

Is there decent double glazing to keep the noise out?

The noise will be during three specific break times each day, plus school run time. So no constant.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 28/03/2025 21:47

I don;t live near a school ( though when my DC were young I kind of wished I did ) , but the noise !
I work in a couple of sites next to Primary schools and children scream
Not laughing, shouting ,singing but proper blood curdling screaming .

It must be unbearable for staff doing playground duty .

But if you don;t mind the parking (or noise) go for it .
Be prepared to see some of the worst parking and behaviour from the parents at drop off .

I used to live across the road from a village primary school. On a busy B road with no parking on it so no getting blocked in or parking issues. We moved in before kids and had no problems, once DD was old enough to go, the 3min school run was an absolute doddle.

Glasgowgal200 · 28/03/2025 21:48

Used to live right across the road from the primary school I used to attend. Plus I now live quite near another primary school. I don't mind the noise

flummingbird · 28/03/2025 21:49

There's a primary directly behind me. I love it, the kids playing is lovely to hear. I get the odd toy thrown into my yard and chuck them back over. I'd rather that than being overlooked by houses

NewmummyJ · 28/03/2025 21:49

I live in front of a school, to be honest it's very easy to tune out the school playground noise. And it's only at limited times anyway (breaktimes termtime, never weekends or evenings). Parking/road busy at school drop off/pick up but if you don't drive not an issue. I'd go for it!

BlondeMummyto1 · 28/03/2025 21:50

I live about 1min walk from one school and about 2-3 from another. Where I am in a private estate cars don’t come in but there’s constantly pedestrians cutting through.

Noise is minimal. You might hear them playing.

So jealous of your considerate parents! I have to cross 3 schools to get to ours, then deal with ours, I can honestly say the majority of parents park like total bellends.

EconomyClassRockstar · 28/03/2025 21:53

We backed up to one (so our back garden backed up to the end of the playing field. It had the advantage of not having the traffic issues but I could still hear the kids playing. I love the sound of kids playing! And my own kids would stand in the playing field and yell for me until I waved to them. It was lovely.

TickingAlongNicely · 28/03/2025 21:54

Noise inst an issue normally. The summer fair is loud, but not everyday obviously

The dangerous parking can be infuriating.

wwidn · 28/03/2025 21:54

wasn't expecting so many replies so quickly so thank you all.. I think i'm going to take it!

I have lived next to a school. Main issue is parking (over your drive, on yellow lines etc). There is some noise but it only really bothered me if I was on nights in summer and trying to sleep in the day. If I were you I’d probably take it.

weegiemum · 28/03/2025 21:55

I’d take it! Our house (for the last 13 years) backs onto a primary school and it’s fine. Bit of noise over break time/ lunch but not much. Once a year on Sports Day you get pumping music all afternoon but they actually let us know (flyers through the door) and I try to go to my friend’s house that afternoon.
And through the summer when you’re out in the garden a lot, there’s very little noise!

BumbleBeegu · 28/03/2025 21:57

I do and it’s fine. Full disclosure though…I do actually teach at the same school 🤦‍♀️🤣😬

Absolutely agree.

I lived across the road from a primary school for many years. The only drawbacks IMO are parking/traffic twice a day on weekdays, and, sometimes, litter.
It's also t peaceful on weekends and during the holidays.

My3loves · 28/03/2025 22:02

I live 2 doors downs from a primary school. The only real issue is parking, everyday without fail somebody blocks my drive at least twice a day. (But if you don't drive this is a none issue)

The school play ground backs on to my back garden so I do hear the children on there lunch break and play times however I don't mind this at all.

Takemymindoff · 28/03/2025 22:03

Just adding that schools are increasingly being expected to provide wrap around care, this may open at 7.30am with cars arriving just before.

Does this fit with your day?
My DH would find this early start disruptive as he works till 2.00am.

Ophy83 · 28/03/2025 22:04

It'll be lovely and quiet in the evenings, weekends and school holidays
