would you or do you live directly across from a school?

I need to make the decision to either take or leave the flat by monday morning..

Flat is directly across the road from a primary school.

Context: Desperate to move away from truly horrendous new neighbour that has made me ill since they moved in just over a year ago, Parking wouldn't be a problem for me as I don't drive, flat is two minutes from my mum's house whereas now I'm over an hour away, Not sure the noise from the school would bother me, thinking it would be much better to hear kids playing than neighbour constantly screaming at her partner when they are both drunk which seems to be 24/7. flat allows pets and I have a cat.

Any problems/issues I might be missing apart from noise and parking?

thanks

100% I would. School finishes in the afternoon, is closed at weekends and holidays

InSpainTheRain · 28/03/2025 22:05

We lived opposite a nursery and reception and infants school for 16 years. Both DC attended there. We loved it - no issues. If you worry about parking in front of your place or noise from kids don't do it though! Turned out great for us but we're quite relaxed, didn't bother if I was blocked for a few mins for example.

Tarantella6 · 28/03/2025 22:16

We can see an infant and junior school from our house and it's a 5 minute walk to secondary school.

Driving at school run times is busy but if you're not travelling at that time it's fine, and there's 13w of holidays anyway!

Liz1tummypain · 28/03/2025 22:18

Yes parking will be tricky at some times. Good if you have kids though as less time to get them in. We lived by a school for about 16 years and it was fine. When they broke up for summer it was really sad. Loved hearing kids playing at lunch times. If it doesn't lift your spirits to hear children playing then you have a brick for a heart.

I’m not across from the school, but their field backs onto my garden! Love hearing them playing outside.
Parking/access will depend on how big the school is.

drspouse · 28/03/2025 22:22

Definitely take it! We live more or less next opposite DD school (school field is opposite but it's big and so school entrance is 300m). My massage therapist lives next to a school and she's just moved from next to a different school, lying on her table hearing the kids playing is always so bright and cheerful.
Only issue is the HT of DD school uses a megaphone on sports day and I think we'd hear her even without it but that's one day of the year!

Karatema · 28/03/2025 22:22

I live opposite the entrance to 2 schools. It’s lovely hearing the kids at playtime, on the odd occasion I’m not at work.
Our main problem is getting out of the drive during pick up but mainly drop off - horrendous. This won’t affect you though!

I live opposite a school. I stopped the mums sitting on my wall and letting the children walk on my wall by planting hedges instead. The parking over the drive drives me insane but at present doesn't limit me as my child is 3. When she goes to school (it won't be this one) I'll be trying to dodge the cars over my drive trying to get out myself. But it's quiet at weekends and holidays. The cars over the drive are only for 10 a day. And I people watch constantly, which I love as I'm nosey. The noise during school hours isn't loud at all. And the behaviour is very good from all children going in and out of school. Take the flat!

LasVegass · 28/03/2025 22:30

I lived opposite a primary school. Parking was the only issue. Noise didn’t bother me as I was working at those hours. I’d take bellend parking over bellend neighbours.

whysomanyleafblowers · 28/03/2025 22:37

Op as you don’t drive that will be ok.

We lived next door to a school for 20 years it was bad. Parents totally blocked the drive couldn’t go up or down the street as no parking so parents ditched their cars in no space.

what you have to consider is trumpet practice at 7:30/8 on an evening

slimming world cars and noise

Holiday clubs so you thought you were ok but no it’s constant noise

So many balls being kicked into your garden and gangs of children demanding the ball - ok for a few but when it’s 20/30 kids per day it’s hard

if you drive you have to allow 30 mins of drop off and pick up where it’s not worth leaving your house

As you you don’t drive I think it will be ok. However do consider so many clubs / the school renting the property to clubs it is not a 8-5 term time it’s 340 days a year of noise including late nights and we plus holidays …..

notatinydancer · 28/03/2025 22:47

Absolutely if I didn’t have a car.

SkaterGrrrrl · 28/03/2025 22:48

I live opposite a school in the London suburbs. At 9 a.m and 3 p.m, it is chaos and there are lots of cars outside the house. Some parents are selfish and park across driveways. However, the sound of children playing does not bother me at all. And of course in the summer when windows are more likely to be open, the school is empty for 6 weeks.

Also, apart from 9 and 3, it is very easy to find parking on our road because the school takes up pretty much the entire half of the street, rather than say 10 houses, each with its own car. I say go for it OP.

arlequin · 28/03/2025 22:48

I live opposite a small 1 form entry school. Only issue is parking. Otherwise ideal as zero noise in the evenings

SocksShmocks · 28/03/2025 22:53

We have a school on our road (private prep if that makes a difference). Parking terrible and inconsiderate at drop off and pick up but that doesn’t sound like an issue for you. I can hear the children playing but I find that pleasant rather than unpleasant. If it’s a primary school I’d definitely take the for if your current neighbours are unpleasant.

Magnalux · 28/03/2025 23:01

I live beside a school and love it, they’re great neighbours. No one there after 3pm, quiet weekends and holidays. We work out all day so the break time noise isn’t an issue, it’s only half an hour here or there anyway. No parking issues as the school has a huge car park

Tropicalturnip · 28/03/2025 23:06

I live right next to a primary school. All I would say is, don't underestimate just how much noise there might be at play times, I was quite shocked when we moved here (very much chaotic kids screeching / shouting / screaming, definitely not soft children's laughter as you might imagine it would be 🤣)
But if you're not home in the day time it won't matter a jot, and also I've been here years now and just zone it out - but if I have a day off it's not peaceful if I want to sit out in the garden over any of the school play times.
Traffic - just consider how busy it might get at drop off and pick up times, and whether that will impact you. After school activities too could impact on traffic.

That being said I'd take all of that any day over a nightmare neighbour, especially if it's making you ill.

pruta · 28/03/2025 23:12

I've moved specifically across from/next to schools, but they were the most oversubscribed schools in the borough and I wanted to get my dcs in! It was obviously convenient for me, but not sure I'd pick the location otherwise. It does get noisy at times, and I always had the windows covered as kids get nosy and peer through them. Parking was never an issue as we don't drive (and at one address I helped campaign to turn our road into a school street which means cars are banned at drop off/pick up times). It's worth checking if your council have a similar policy.

Sgtmajormummy · 28/03/2025 23:19

I intentionally bought a house in the school zone of my city. The school run was a five-minute saunter

I had a nursery playground at the bottom of my garden, DD’s primary next to it, 3 technical institutes and DS’s high school so close he could nip home for a forgotten book in the time it took to “go to the toilet” (in the time before CCTV).

At playtime the kids came roaring and screaming into the yard, balls got thrown over but we knew the times and worked around it. The chaos of cars, bikes, takeaway trucks (!) and buses at pickup and drop off could be avoided by taking a 2 min detour.

The rest of the time it was an oasis. I’d certainly make the same choice again.

burntoutnurse · 28/03/2025 23:23

I used to live next door to a school. Drive way in between me and the playground, my bedroom backed onto the playground.

I got used to the noise tbh. Even sleeping during the day as I worked nights :)

Guavafish1 · 28/03/2025 23:24

Yes it’s nice

just the road is busy at the obvious hours

JeanGenieJean · 28/03/2025 23:31

I live near a primary school and I can hear traffic in the morning and at end of school day, children playing at playtime and lunchtime and the odd whistle when they do PE.
I have misophonia but the school noise doesn't bother me one bit.

hjokhjjjkkkd · 28/03/2025 21:51

So jealous of your considerate parents! I have to cross 3 schools to get to ours, then deal with ours, I can honestly say the majority of parents park like total bellends.

I live opposite a school and they park on HA property. I dont drive but it still causes issues like when a taxi picked me up to take me to my parents house the morning of my dads funeral. He was late because of this.

mondaytosunday · 28/03/2025 23:47

There’s a primary a block over. Driving on that part of the road is restricted during drop off/pick up times so parking is not an issue fur residents (who have an exemption to the rule).
I love the sound of the kids and it keeps the neighbourhood family friendly and safer.
