Great night ruined by ‘fat’ comment.

Tonight I read poetry to a sold out show and felt on top of the world.

on the way home a group of teenagers tried to get my attention with a stupid comment. When I blanked them one then said, ‘damn, she’s got a fat ass.’

And you know what, I have. I’ve gone up to a size 16 and I’m slowly making changes to address my health.

But I’m so angry and upset to hear a negative opinion I have of myself commented on by a complete stranger and the power for it to hurt me and overshadow a proud moment.

I think they were saying it to compliment you. But disgusting comment regardless. Big bums are in these days with the teens..apparently. Congratulations on your poetry show.

I’ve had people say horrible things about me on the street before and it does hurt. But who gives a fuck what a stranger thinks. I hope you’re celebrating tonight or other the weekend.

Worst thing I did when I had a teenager say something shitty like this to me was reply ‘I was slimmer than you are at your age, wonder how fat you’ll be at mine!’ and I truly felt awful. But if it even gave a minor pause in her thinking when insulting people then perhaps it was sensible?

BubbaHorovitz · 27/03/2025 00:36

You need a reposte like "I need this big ass to smother badly behaved teens"

although that might be misconstrued as a threat of violence / sexual contact

you can probably think of a better one

LushLemonTart · 27/03/2025 01:00

Are you in the US?
If the UK you should have said "it's fat arse dickheads."

Please try not to dwell. I have a big bump but even when very slim it stuck out. When I was young it was the Kate Moss look but I didn't give a fuck.

Embrace your curves and ignore ignorant little shits. Even if it was meant as a compliment they have no right commenting.

Congratulations on your show.

pollyglot · 27/03/2025 01:03

Obviously, you're not a teacher! "Big fat fuckin' bitch" is a common term of abuse from random pupils to any female teacher over size 12. Means nothing. You are an amazing, talented woman, and "fat" is the worst, most offensive epithet a teenager can imagine.

DisabledDemon · 27/03/2025 01:05

Call me a fat arse and there's a very good chance that you're going to get punched in the mouth.

There's no excuse. It's rude.

I'm always puzzled be people having hugely out-of-proportion hurt reactions from a casual insult, especially from a stranger. All the more so, since you say that it was pretty accurate. Haven't we all been called something - fat, scrawny, too short, too tall, too frumpy?
Too bad you couldn't have retorted something like, Luckily, I'm losing weight and will have slimmed down soon, but you'll probably be stuck with being rude and stupid for a long time.

damn, she’s got a fat ass.’

Is misogynistic bullshit from a total stranger.

If that's your idea of a 'compliment' I despair.

This.

A compliment, ffs.

I'm sorry OP. This should not have happened. Focus on your incredible success tonight, and gently tell yourself that your self-worth should not depend on a complete stranger's mindless misogyny.

Firstly - congratulations on your show! I would LOVE to do something similar, but I lack the stage presence / confidence to do so. Very cool indeed, I love that for you.

Secondly, I think that was meant as a compliment, (however disgusting and degrading it is, of course that goes without saying). A ‘fat arse’ is an attractive feature, so many women these days pay money to have surgical enhancements to their backsides to make them bigger and fuller (filler and BBL for example) lucky for us the Lord has blessed us with natural fat arses, aren’t we lucky! I love mine, I’d much rather have curves than angles.

But even if it wasn’t a compliment - so what? I doubt any of those teenage boys resembled a young Brad Pitt, did they? Don’t let them take away from your amazing achievement!
