Why are people wearing those ridiculous Cliff Richard glasses?

I know I’m old and stop press people like different things etc etc but I’ve just seen Gwyneth Paltrow in a pair and honestly they just don’t do anyone any favours. Some fashions should not come back!

lol these people talking like these are some sort of mad crazy out there style. They are aviators. Completely classic. Have people really never seen aviators before?

carrotsandtomatoes · 26/03/2025 17:05

How are these unattractive? And how are they being seen as something weird. So classic.

Sunglasses in that style are one thing. Plain glasses with gold rims - only in the photos above and on my grandfather, in the 1970s.

Pigeonqueen · 26/03/2025 17:07

I think there’s a move in the last few years to glasses being a statement fashion thing rather than something that should blend in with your face. I’m extremely short sighted (-10 both eyes) and I used to hate wearing my glasses because I was sort of conditioned to feel they were something to try and hide - and with my prescription the lenses make my eyes look tiny so as much as you thin them etc they’re still really noticeable. For ages the fashion was literally as transparent as possible, tiny little wire frames etc. Now people want their glasses to be a main event, really loud and noticeable. And I love it.

Attractiveness is subjective 🤷‍♀️

ConstantlyFuriosa · 26/03/2025 17:25

They look great! I’ve got the dark green aviators so I already like them as sunglasses. Cant stand Gwyneth but think she looks nice in the optical version.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 26/03/2025 17:27

The style as sunglasses have been popular again for a while, I wouldn’t think Cliff Richard if I saw someone in aviator sunglasses. And there has been more of a trend of using sunglasses frames for normal glasses, instead of statement frames for sunnies then trying to have as bland as possible glasses.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 26/03/2025 17:30

Also as a women who’s had to start wearing glasses as I aged, I like that Gwynth isn’t hiding her relatively new glasses wearing, not taking them off for insta posts or wearing contacts, just happily wearing the glasses she needs.

Sorry that would help - like these

why do clothes and accessories have to do someone " a favour" that assumes that people are wearing things so you find them nice to look at. It's not for you it's for them.

It's quite a misogynistic thing usually, like men wanting women in high heels and being angry that women are fat as they want to look at slim women. To misquote the book - people don't owe you pretty.

PinkArt · 26/03/2025 17:37

Surely the influence is 70s Gloria Steinem rather than 80s Cliff Richard, to add irony to 'but women don't look pretty in them'!

So true.

Aussiegold · 26/03/2025 18:14

Blimey, wearing a pair right now, 7 years old, so can't work out if I was ahead of the pack or have accidentally come into fashion!

Never heard Rayban called weird before though.

Andylion · 26/03/2025 18:15

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 26/03/2025 16:31

Agree they are awful. As are the really thick square frames like the free NHS ones you got in the 80s. Nobody looks nice in them.

I call them “beautiful ugly glasses” because really good looking people still look hot while wearing them. I can’t find a pic but if anyone saw James Purefoy in Rev, ( I think that was the show) you’ll know what I’m talking about.

ETA: I meant the ones with really thick frames, not aviators.

Stravaig · 26/03/2025 18:23

As worn by Tom Cruise in Top Gun 1986 and Top Gun: Maverick 2022?

Ah I see what you mean now OP. I thought you meant this kind of thing (that a student of mine was wearing today).
I don’t think those really look like aviators. I’ve never seen anyone look bad in proper aviators.

Ok well as someone else said, it’s all subjective. But surely no one is then surprised when something is in fashion or is worn by people. Why is it a mystery? I think the models in the pictures I posted look amazing in the glasses.

Nobody has expressed surprise.

Why is Cliffs stubble so green? Misses point of thread entirely

bunnibee · 27/03/2025 17:59

Definitely Jeffery Dahmer vibe.

MiserableMrsMopp · 27/03/2025 18:00

Same reason they wear ugly Uggs, pulled up sports socks and those vile quilted granny-style puffa coats.

Following trends even when the trend is ugly as fcuk.

Quacksalver · 27/03/2025 18:12

Women seem to wear them better than men, who just resemble dahmer/richards when they wear them. I had a dior pair many years ago with brown lenses, which softened them a bit. They had more of a frank butcher vibe!

hopeishere · 27/03/2025 18:14

Because they like them. 🤷🏻‍♀️ DH asks stuff like this all the time. Just cause you don’t like them doesn’t mean everyone thinks the same.

autisticbookworm · 27/03/2025 18:16

I went to spec savers the other day and almost all the glasses look like the ones Jeffrey Dahlmer wore
