Are you a follower or a leader?

I think I’m mostly a follower but can be a leader at times. I feel more comfortable when someone else is taking charge though, if I’m honest. Maybe because I have to take charge at home so I don’t want to be leading all the time, it’s exhausting.

I wonder if these are natural personality traits or if they can be learned.

I think it's upbringing, I'm always nurture over nature though. My family weren't great at adulting, so I had to take the lead at an early stage.

Thecomfortador · 25/03/2025 17:33

I'm a cat. Happy doing my own thing and sod everyone else.

I'm all seriousness I'm a follower I suppose and while I'm sure upbringing contributed to that, it very much is my natural disposition. (By that I mean I have no desire to lead and am pretty useless it when I have to).

fytyka · 25/03/2025 17:37

I read something today that talked about being the ‘first follower’ because a leader can’t be a leader unless someone follows and there always has to be a brave first, which is very different from the 100th or whatever.

Neither. I'm a lone wolf/ranger.

LollyLand · 25/03/2025 17:40

I’m a leader.

scandalito · 25/03/2025 17:41

Leader, at home and at work. Not what I consciously want but the role I play nonetheless

WingBingo · 25/03/2025 17:42

Leader. I don’t want to be at home though. Wish someone else could take the lead. I hate making decisions after a long day making them at work.

Mmmkaay · 25/03/2025 17:44

Follower at work, leader at home in most things.... I'd like to know if leadership skills can be acquired but I'm not sure that if you don't have a natural inclination for it you'll be successful.

Mum2jenny · 25/03/2025 17:44

Can’t be a follower, as I’m too much of a control freak, so I must be a leader.

CountFucula · 25/03/2025 17:44

With social issues I’m a first follower and early adopter - electric cars, wild swimming, progressive politics etc but still a follower rather than an innovator

with my personal life I’m a leader

Crinkle77 · 25/03/2025 17:44

I'm probably more of a follower than a leader but I can lead. Although I don't want to be the ultimate leader if that makes sense.

NatureOverNightclubs · 25/03/2025 17:45

Follower at work
Loner at home

madaffodil · 25/03/2025 17:59

I'm more than happy for someone else to be in charge. Just so long as they do what I tell them.

😂

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 25/03/2025 18:03

Ohh, err, umm, I don't really know...
What do you think I should be?

Carinattheliqorstore1 · 25/03/2025 18:15

Leader when I have to be at work. But prefer not to be.

ohyesido · 25/03/2025 18:21

I’m a leader, but I don’t tend to get involved with day to day minutiae. In the event of a real crisis my peers and family will look to me for guidance, I sometimes think they’d follow me into a burning building if I said it was the right thing to do with enough urgency

User2431652 · 25/03/2025 19:08

To expand on my lone wolf/ranger comment, I tend to pave my own way, don't follow trends unless I like them (rarely do I but if i do, I don't mind) and not because they're what we're supposed to be doing. I've found that I started doing several things alone that ended up becoming trendy a couple of years or more later. I have a lot of unpopular opinions or simply point of views that people either find a refreshing change or strange (not all bad).

I just don't do well in society because of this though I get along well with people because I'm friendly to everyone and can mask myself to adapt on a surface level, but the opposite is never the case.

LaPalmaLlama · 25/03/2025 19:15

At work, I'm happiest as a sort of a Cromwell/ Himmler, but much less evil

MargaretThursday · 25/03/2025 19:54

I'm definitely a follower. I was once asked to go on a "growing leaders" course and told the person that asked me that I was far happier being a sheep and not leading.
I hate leading. I hate putting myself forward, standing up and being seen at the front.

But I will do it when I need to. So if I'm there and no one else will do it, I am capable of taking charge and I can hide the knocking knees and the panic inside me. People often say I'm good at leading, and sound really confident. I'm not really.

Aragonite · 25/03/2025 20:05

Neither.
I have zero interest in leading or following.
Happy to follow procedures but only if I agree with them and very little respect for authority.
It's just as well that I'm self employed 😀

gandticenslice · 25/03/2025 20:21

Definitely a follower who likes to give instructions 😬

SummerDaysOnTheWay · 25/03/2025 20:22

scandalito · 25/03/2025 17:41

Leader, at home and at work. Not what I consciously want but the role I play nonetheless

Same here.
Exhausting innit.

LadyNairne · 25/03/2025 20:24

Leader. I have a high risk threshold and desire to try new approaches, coupled with innate belief that things will work out and that it’s better to make any decision than no decision. Not sure if these are the best leadership traits!

Shetlands · 25/03/2025 20:35

I'm a leader but not an autocrat. I like to create teams where we share ideas and work together on achieving a goal. In my working life, I mostly held leadership roles after the first few years at the job. I think I come across as a natural leader, including as a child eg I was elected form captain twice at school.

However, in aspects of life where I know less than others, I'm happy to be a follower eg I'm a rubbish cook so I don't mind chopping the veg while someone skilled gives orders.

PenneyFouryourthoughts · 25/03/2025 20:48

I lead, but badly. I am the Liz Truss of leaders.
I am a follower. I followed all the rules during the pandemic, even the silly ones. I like other people taking charge. I'll lead for a bit then sigh with appreciation when someone better takes over.

I'd rather be on my own tbh.
