How do you pronounce Hyundai?

We used to say hi-yoon-di but here in Canada it’s pronounced hun-day.
I was just wondering if the UK has changed their pronunciation.
Also interested in how other nations pronounce it.

They are going all out to change the pronunciation in the UK. The TV ad is based on people pronouncing it wrong (on their sat nav) and the radio ad ends with “but the way it’s pronounced ,,,,”

CoffeeAndCakeLover · 24/03/2025 04:10

Hmm I'd say H'yun-dai but also think hai-yoon-dai is reasonable. If someone said "hun-day" I'd think that was a bit odd. Not sure if I'd know what they were talking about.

MessinaBloom · 24/03/2025 04:25

In Australia, the pronunciation is ‘Hai-yun-dai’ with the stress on the ‘yun’.

Blackbookofsmiles1 · 24/03/2025 05:35

Hi- ooond- day. Too ingrained over the years for it to be pronounced any other way. They will need to accept their fate!

Not where I’m from in oz . Mine was always hi un dai.

Exactly this. I refuse to refer to Horace (i10) in any other way.

cloudengel · 24/03/2025 06:26

"Hyon-deh" although the o is a little higher than our o sound in English and the e sound is somewhere between our a and e sounds. That's only because I studied Korean at university many many years ago though, and so spent a considerable part of my early 20s being annoying and telling my family "but it's not pronounce hi-yoon-dai" 😅

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 24/03/2025 06:26

The new adverts with the preferred pronunciation is really annoying.

They are flogging a dead horse here.

TappyGilmore · 24/03/2025 06:27

Hyun-day … so the first syllable said quite quickly and with the letters running together, not like Hi-un-day.

ItsUpToYou · 24/03/2025 06:29

It’s a bit like when the IKEA adverts started pronouncing it as “ik-kay-ya”. I can’t be the only one who has always said “eye-kee-ya”?

backoncrack · 24/03/2025 06:32

In the north we say hi-un-die

Eviebeans · 24/03/2025 06:33

Why are they so keen to change it? I had an Amica years ago but she was always Mabel to me - I loved her but she would only start when she felt like it - not sure pronounciation would have changed that

Holdonforsummer · 24/03/2025 06:36

i find those adverts sooooo annoying and patronising!! I wouldn’t buy a Hyundai now, however you pronounce it!

Fatloss · 24/03/2025 06:37

Hy oondi - found adds from way back with that. As for why change it - publicity, talking about the brand on this thread for example

Sinkintotheswamp · 24/03/2025 06:44

Hi-un-die.

CottonCandyLand · 25/03/2025 02:59

Thanks all.
Like I said, it’s pronounced Hunday on TV here, but as a Brit originally I always feel a bit of a wanker saying Hunday 😂

I’m in the north and I don’t 😂

i say hyun as one syllable, so sort of Hun-dai, but more like yun-dai but with a h added at the start. Hard to explain!

mathanxiety · 25/03/2025 03:10

Hun-dai (in US)

I think it should be Hyun, not Hun, but hey ho.

SiobhanSharpe · 25/03/2025 03:11

Yeah, I’ll say Hoon-day (or eg Ceetro-en) when I start saying Paree or Roma here in the UK. Hyundye and Citron all the way!

Pemba · 25/03/2025 03:13

I think, the company must have approved the original advertising when Hyundai cars started being sold in the UK, with the pronunciation we became accustomed to (Hai - YUN - dai). So why didn't they ensure it was correct at the time?

That (incorrect apparently) pronunciation was not imposed on the company , they commissioned the original adverts. They were OK with it at the time, but now we all have to remember to say it differently, but people have so much to remember already!

user1492757084 · 25/03/2025 03:20

Hy-oon--day Australian.
Pronounced with equal emphasis on each syllable but a longer rest between the last two.

Tbrh · 25/03/2025 03:52

Surely it's only relevant how it's pronounced in South Korea as that's the correct way to pronounce it?

AspiringChatBot · 25/03/2025 04:08

I'm in the USA and I've mostly heard it pronounced the Korean way - but maybe not exactly because most people don't speak Korean and some of the sounds are unfamiliar.

But generally: HYUN-day. "Day" like Monday, Saturday, birthday, etc. Hyun is a little less familiar, but rhymes with bun, gun, son, etc. I think you just have to hear it said correctly, and then it's pretty easy to repeat so you get hyun rather than hun or yun.

I see a lot more difficulty with people pronouncing Huawai (wah-WEY).
