Looking for inspiration. Done New York, planning Chicago next then Boston. I absolutely love America and would honestly love to do every state except Florida...

Thank you!

Came here to say Florida. 😀

Parker231 · 23/03/2025 18:35

We live just over the border in Canada and are no longer travelling to the US.

NatureOverNightclubs · 23/03/2025 18:41

I would LOVE to do Alaska

New Mexico is beautiful - go to Santa Fe!

CraftyGin · 23/03/2025 18:43

Ohio, because it is my US home.

Sourisblanche · 23/03/2025 18:47

Well it would have to be Texas because I lived, worked and became a mother there. I loved living in that state but I’m pretty pissed off with Texans right now.

Overtheatlantic · 23/03/2025 18:47

You can’t go wrong with California. Northern California climate is very different from Southern California, but You have the Pacific Ocean, mountains, forests, deserts, vineyards, Mexican culture, the beauty is off the charts. Redwood forest, the Pacific Coast Highway, the drive from LA to Las Vegas is stunning desert.

MissyB1 · 23/03/2025 18:51

Prefer Canada.

NameChange100021 · 23/03/2025 18:52

I’m a big fan of California and Massachusetts! Luckily they’re both somewhere I visit frequently for work, though I’m avoiding ‘fun’ travel for a while as it’s becoming less safe for mixed race DS. Florida is amazing from a activity holiday POV (I’m a big Disney/theme park fan 😂) but I don’t love it outside of the disney ‘bubble’.

festivemouse · 23/03/2025 18:52

Massachusetts!! Also Florida, it’s fab.

Hopefully to become part of Canada

BigDahliaFan · 23/03/2025 19:07

California pretty much has everything. Really liked Arizona too. Miami was surprisingly good fun but not been anywhere else in Florida. I’d like to go to Colorado and Wyoming.

elm26 · 23/03/2025 19:12

I have family in Clearwater, Florida and I’ve been going since I was a baby. I really think Florida can get a bad rep but so many beautiful places and beaches. I also love Marco Island, Sanibel and the Keys. I’ve been to New York, Texas and Chicago which are all lovely but don’t compare to Florida for me. Just to add, I don’t rate Orlando at all.

Pedallleur · 23/03/2025 19:18

Not been to them all sadly. Northern California was beautiful and then into Oregon. Colorado/Wyoming amazing with mountains (Rockies/Tetons) and wildlife. Montana is genuinely Big Sky country.Arizona with it's deserts and heat is different again. Vermont on the East Coast equally beautiful. I'm told the Carolinas on the Atlantic coast are worth a visit. Would love to go to New Mexico. I prefer the outdoors America to the big cities and would like to see the Florida Keys and the Baja Peninsula. Alaska would be a dream. A small boat trip up the coast to places like Juneau and a trip to see bears somewhere like Kodiak but it's a long trip. Hawaii looked amazing in a colleagues photos. Each island is different. Just seeing the lava flowing into the sea would be worth the trip

For all y'all mentioning Canada as some kind of hate swipe, I'm sure you know it's not a state ... yet ... just kidding - sort of ... One of the saddest parts of living in the UK (after the weather) is the jealous hate for the US.

ICE is no joke but if any of you know any immigrants to the UK, I'm sure you can attest that meeting the legal strictures and the living conditions for those people are not very nice either.

And, as ever, the UK hate for the USA on MN is sad to behold since you would be humbled to discover how much the average US citizen respects and reveres the UK as the fount of civilization. Seriously, they will treat you like geniuses and kings if you ever visit. But at the same time ... they've NEVER heard of Mumsnet! They're not thinking of you at all!!!

My home state (roughly the same size as Great Britain) is an amazing place with ski resorts at one end and beaches as nice as any Caribbean island at the other with miles of ocean front houses (many of which you can rent for a week or more) where you can literally walk out the door, down the steps into the sand and throw yourself into the sea (search Emerald Isle or Atlantic Beach). In between are lush forests with scenic waterfalls and teeming with traditional US wildlife like racoons, bears, squirrels and snakes - both poisonous and benign - and world renowned research centres (Duke University, GlaxoSmithKline, IBM) and several airports with 2 or even 3 runways. My state has contributed a wide range of products which Britains consume regularly and like including Pepsi, Krispy Kreme and . Michael Jordan started his basketball career there.

I have also lived in New Orleans which is, in its own way, as amazing or more so than my home state. I have also spent summers in Austin, Tx and Ville de Québec, oh, whoops, that's in Canada ... the 51st state to be ... maybe
I have also visited Alaska, Florida and states in between like Virginia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Georgia, Maryland, DC - not really a state..., Pennsylvania, Maine, New York City (not NY state)

Canada will never ever be the 51st state as neither our government or population want it. None of us want to swop the lifestyle, culture and benefits we currently enjoy.

‘Jealous’? Oh love, really really not. The opposite. Very relieved not to have Trump as a leader and very sad for the nice Americans.

That’s the issue, Americans are mostly really nice. I’ve rarely met a mean one. Typically kind and sweet. But they elect utter fuckwits. No idea why.

And saying that they’ve ’never heard’ of MN. My experience is they’ve never heard of a great many things. I’ve spoken to people all over the world about aspects of American interventionism. And they all know more than the average American. America has a history of messing around in other people’s business all over the world, and causing untold misery. Ignorance plus power is deadly. Most Americans couldn’t find Guatemala, El Salvador, Cuba, Angola and Laos on a map but those countries have been indelibly scarred by American actions. If only they would fix infrastructure, health, education, lobbying, social cohesion and the myriad other issues in America, rather than trying to bully the rest of the world for Putin, there would be less anger. But America can’t leave well alone. And it’s now started on its oldest and most faithful friends.

Their relationship with Russia has fucked things up for decades now. And continues to. Whether they are enemies or friends, they use the rest of world as a chessboard, killing people like they are pawns. It’s repulsive. So no, not jealousy. And not hatred of Americans either. Hatred of a dreadful system that’s one of the worst ‘democracies’ —not for much longer— in the world.

America needs to look inwards. But also outwards. To learn from other countries. Rather than assuming, without any knowledge, that American values and systems are the best and therefore imposing them on others.

And joking as an American about Canada being a state? Threatening other sovereign nations doesn’t make you funny, it makes you a dick. Laughing as you kick the weaker child. Be better than that. I know all the Americans I’ve met are better than that. Which is the only thing that gives me hopes.

Back to the OP. If you must go, and I wouldn’t, go to the states that didn’t vote for the Orange Hitler. Buy local.

Colorado was, and no doubt still is, stunning.

really enjoyed travelling round New England - maybe Maine as the fave of the NE states.

LeedsZebra90 · 23/03/2025 20:14

I grew up in the mountains in northern California which I love for obvious reasons but my favourite states are probably Oregon (like a more chilled out CA) and north carolina.

jfoyo26 · 23/03/2025 20:15

Georgia! Often overlooked. Lovely climate. Great BBQ food. Home to Chick Fil A. Some great state parks. Savannah, Atlanta and the Blue Ridge Mountains. All the old money used to Holiday on the Georgia Coast. Look up Jekyll Island and St Simons too!

DoubleDoubleDown · 23/03/2025 20:16

I'm Canadian and currently visiting Oregon for our spring break. Don't come for me this trip has been planned and paid for since long before the madness. It's beautiful here and I have to say everyone from US border staff to hotel staff and locals have been nothing but lovely, friendly and helpful.

BritinUtah · 23/03/2025 20:16

Utah is a great place to visit. Amazing national parks, good food and mountains. Lots and lots to do. And could take a trip across Wyoming and to Mt Rushmore in South Dakota or Vegas if you wanted. I grew up in Alaska and its a great place to visit but extremely expensive and has a huge huge issue with homelessness and crime right now.

Could you tell me a bit more about Oregon please? What is there to do and is it feasible to go there without a car?
