Anyone know how accurate adult height predictors are on kids??

As a bit of fun I filled out some adult height predictors for my kids over the weekend. They asked for child’s age, height, weight, mums height and dad’s height. My eldest son is predicted 6ft 7…!

daughter predicted 5ft 7 and younger son 6ft.

just wondering if anyone did these on their children when they were younger and how they actually compared to adult height? My children are 5-9 yrs old

Not even slightly in DD’s case!

SevernWonders · 23/03/2025 16:18

Spot on with my 2.

SueSheeMee · 23/03/2025 16:21

DD was predicted 5' 10" and it looks like she's done at 5' 6". She was very tall early but then stopped at 11, same as I did.

DS was 5' 10" and at 17 that's what he is now but he hit puberty late and his voice didn't break until he was 16 so he could yet go taller.

The ones in the red books (do they still have those) put DS at 6’ (he’s 6’5”) and DD at 5’7” (she’s 5’9”).

Newbie887 · 23/03/2025 16:57

Hmm, a mixed bag then! The 6ft 7 kind of shocked me a bit. I remember doing some kind of prediction where we measured hand size and stride etc in Y6 and I was predicted 5ft 7. I’m 5ft 8 so that was quite accurate.

My son’s red book predicts he’ll be 6ft 2in! A whole foot taller than me! His dad is about 5ft 7 so who knows!

Redstrampoline · 23/03/2025 17:17

UpUpUpU My Dh and I are similar heights you and your husband. Our 15 year old is 6 foot and still growing, so your DS could be the same.

mushroomshroom · 23/03/2025 17:20

How would you access these height predictions in the 80s and 90s?

mushroomshroom · 23/03/2025 17:22

DH and I both grew late anyway so I presume
any childhood prediction wouldn't be right as we were average in primary school. He's 6ft 2 and I'm 5ft 9.

mushroomshroom · 23/03/2025 17:24

6ft 7 would worry me a bit. Being tall is good but too tall is more unhealthy I thought?

waitingquietly · 23/03/2025 17:26

I think it’s variable - one son is slightly over the predicted height by half an inch and the other is quite a lot shorter though only 15 so possibly still going to grow ( though his brother was pretty much done by then ) - if he grows like his brother he’s about 3 inches too short

Yes that’s what I thought when it came out as that. That there may be health issues to do with skeletal / spine. I don’t know though. I guess I just keep on feeding him lots of calcium and protein and hope for the best. Maybe he will stop growing early, it does seem quite a height given his dad is “only” 6ft and I’m 5ft 8.5

Yes, DS3 was also predicted to be 6'7. He's nowhere near that, 6'1 at the most. His brothers are pretty close to their predicted heights ( all in their 20s now).
But the whole height prediction thing can only be very general. Both my parents were almost a foot shorter than their (full) sibling.

tinmrn · 23/03/2025 17:54

Well there's not much you can do to control it anyway!

Well no, exactly! I was just curious

My ds was predicted to be 6'5 from our heights and his curve in the red book and at 18 that is what he is. Not a surprise as we're tall and his male cousins with similar height parents are in that range too.

DustyMaiden · 23/03/2025 18:35

DD 1 was predicted 6ft 9 she is 5ft 9.

Tiswa · 23/03/2025 18:45

How tall and old is he? DS was predicted to be 6ft4 and is 5ft10 at 12. DD was predicted 5ft5 but stopped at 5ft3.5

Tiswa · 23/03/2025 18:46

And I’m 5ft4 and DH is 6ft and DS still looks very much on target for the 6ft 4

IAmNeverThePerson · 23/03/2025 18:48

Ds1 predicted 5’9”. Currently 5’11”. DS2 predicted 6’. Current 6’3”. I am short and didn’t eat much as a child so probably not as tall as i should be so the skewing the calculations.

Vipersgonnavipe · 23/03/2025 18:50

Dd was tall early and predicted to be 5’10. She stopped growing at 11 and is 5’3” now. Relatively early periods which can stop girls growing, the growth plates on bones close within a year or periods starting.

DS is still growing but is taller than both me and dd already at 11. He was predicted to be over 6’. So I guess we will see, Both DH and I stopped growing in height relatively young.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 23/03/2025 18:53

We used a theory of double the height they are at 2 = adult height. Think DD would be predicted 5ft 8 which seems to be on track so far.

Freesolo1975 · 23/03/2025 18:54

My dd ( now 16) was predicted 5 foot 8 going by the red book, she is 5 foot 9 and stopped growing a few years ago so quite accurate. My DS was predicted 5 foot 10 and at nearly 18 is exactly that height. He may grow a bit more though as started puberty late . My youngest DD is predicted only 5 foot! She is 4 foot 9 at age 11 and is much shorter than her sister at same age so will be interesting to see

Freesolo1975 · 23/03/2025 19:00

@Vipersgonnavipe that’s what I have read too, bit worried about my DD3 who is only 11 and started her period 4 months ago at only 4 foot 9, think she will remain dinky. With a big sister who is 5 foot 9!

Christwosheds · 23/03/2025 19:02

MrsTerryPratchett · 23/03/2025 16:16

Not even slightly in DD’s case!

My adult height is 4” more than my predicted height !
