Anyone know how accurate adult height predictors are on kids??

Newbie887 · 23/03/2025 16:15

As a bit of fun I filled out some adult height predictors for my kids over the weekend. They asked for child’s age, height, weight, mums height and dad’s height. My eldest son is predicted 6ft 7…!

daughter predicted 5ft 7 and younger son 6ft.

just wondering if anyone did these on their children when they were younger and how they actually compared to adult height? My children are 5-9 yrs old

Depends how old they are when you track them in the red book as to how accurate their predicted final height might be. If it’s from when they are young around 2ish, it can be more accurate than if you’re measuring between 11-16 as everyone hits puberty at different times skewing the results.

FWIW, DS1 fully grown is 1 inch taller than his predicted height aged 2 and DS2 is 2 inches taller than his predicted height in the red book, so kind of accurate.

Wanted to mention that DS2 is 6’8 and is perfectly healthy. Spine is good and everything else, he’s just from a very tall family. He loves it, gets lots of attention and is very confident. Nothing wrong with being tall (other than them eating huge amounts of food).

My son’s length at birth tracked to 6”6. How we laughed at the idea! He’s 17, 6”7 and still growing.

Not remotely correct

Yes that’s what I thought when it came out as that. That there may be health issues to do with skeletal / spine. I don’t know though. I guess I just keep on feeding him lots of calcium and protein and hope for the best. Maybe he will stop growing early, it does seem quite a height given his dad is “only” 6ft and I’m 5ft 8.5

My ds is 6'6'' and has no issues. He is very sporty though.

My son is 9.5 yrs old and is 148cm tall. This combined with his weight, my height, and his dad’s height gave 6ft 7. He has always been 99th-ish centile on the height charts and 80ish on the weight charts so I think is following his curve still compared to when he was two.

thank you for the reassurement about the tall height, I’m glad your son is healthy! My husbands family is all tall so he must get it from there…all the men are 6ft plus with two being around 6ft 5

Based on the "mum's height + dad's height + 5 inches (-5 for girls) ÷2" both DC are pretty much where predicted.
I'm about 2 inches shorter than I 'should' be.

Based on the "double their height at age 2.5" method, DS is about 6 inches taller than predicted. I don't know how tall DS1 was at 2.5 so can't vouch for accuracy.

Thank you for the reassurance! My son is also v sporty, he never stops. But it’s probably good as his height will be supported by muscle

DS was predicted to be 5’2” at 2 and referral for growth hormone was suggested by the GP. We said no, good job, DS is 5’11”.
MIL said DH was short until he was 8, and DS was the same.

Wossyshow · 23/03/2025 21:51

Our DS was predicted on centile size at 2 yo to be 6’2”. We laughed as I’m 5’4 and DH is 5’9. He’s now in his 30s and 6’6”. He got to 6 feet about 15 yo I think. His sister also high centile at birth but settled to about 50th is 5’7 so much more average. We think the height is from a generation or two ago!

it must be your height that makes it higher - back in Feb 2022 at the same age DS I remember just being under 5ft - at 12.5 he is 5ft 10 now but predicted 6ft 4

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 23/03/2025 22:27

Children are half their eventual height at the age of two.

That has worked out exactly for all my DC.

Am805463 · 23/03/2025 22:28

Not correct for my older two. DS1 was always 91st centile and predicted 6ft 2, DS2 was 9th centile and predicted 5ft 8. Both have ended up the exact same at 5ft 11!

That's on average. It's not always correct.

mindingmyown37 · 23/03/2025 22:38

Did on DS17, he’s predicted to reach 6ft 2… he’s 6ft atm… still got growing time;.; so time will tell.

exhaustedbeinghappy · 23/03/2025 22:40

Not at all - DH is 6’4 and I’m 5’7 … predictor said DD would be 5’9 (which is actually my sister’s height) but DD is 5’7, which I know is the upper end of normal, but DD hates being “so short”

RedRosesPinkLilies · 23/03/2025 22:44

With my three sons - the eldest was predicted to be tallest and he’s the smallest. 5ft 11”. He was above the 90th centile.
Middle has turned out a couple of inches taller than expected. (6ft) Was between 75-90th centile
And youngest is definitely taller than expected. (6ft 2”) Can’t remember his centile as he was the 4th child- but definitely not expected to be as tall as he is. Lower than 90th centile

mushroomshroom · 23/03/2025 22:50

Dd was tall early and predicted to be 5’10. She stopped growing at 11 and is 5’3” now. Relatively early periods which can stop girls growing, the growth plates on bones close within a year or periods starting.

I thought girls stopped growing much more after their periods.

Vates · 24/03/2025 05:44

I always find height differences between siblings interesting. My Sister is 5' 3 and I am 5' 9. There is only 14 months between us but I overtook her height wise very young and was often the tallest girl in my class throughout the years.

I have 2 sisters, one is 5' 1, one 5' 3, I'm 5' 9.

Two brothers, one 6' 1 and one 6'.

Parents 5' 1 & 6'.

My husband is 6' 1.

And our children are...

5' 5 and 5'6.

You're not always taller than your mother.

Sandylittleknees · 24/03/2025 06:10

Spot on for my dd, but that was following a hand scan to look at growth plates.

Girls grow for about 2 years after their first period.

atmywitsend1989 · 24/03/2025 06:18

Not accurate at all for my eldest, close enough for my youngest (both had hit puberty early, oldest is male and youngest is female, so they could still grow some inches to be fair)

Tradersinsnow · 24/03/2025 06:32

DS was absolutely tiny, he was followed by the endo growth clinic for years. He had a predicted height of 5.4 but never quite reached the point of needing growth hormone.

He's 6.2 now. Taller than me and his father so the mid-height between our heights hasn't been accurate.

Rewis · 24/03/2025 06:37

My nephews prediction was 6'8 and as an adult he is about 6'

I think for me they predicted 5'11 and I'm 5'7.

Zeitumschaltung · 24/03/2025 06:38

It depends which method you are using to predict; there are several. My siblings and I are all double our heights aged two so that method worked for us at least.
