I've got a spring in my step because........

I've just had my hair coloured.
Nothing wrong in that, except I'm 66 and I just can't envisage letting my natural grey shine through.

I have my hair coloured professionally four times a year, progressively getting lighter. In between cut and colour, I use a root touch up powder.
It's ridiculous how much it means to me, but really felt like I had a spring in my step leaving the hairdresser yesterday, ready to look in the mirror and like my reflection.

Please share your thoughts on going grey.
My face is untouched, never had any work done to my body either.
I'm a size 8-10, eat healthily, exercise regularly but the thought of going grey, hhhmmmm.
Your thoughts.

My thoughts are do what works for you.

I am going grey gradually and that is fine by me.

Nsky62 · 23/03/2025 08:10

That's nice and natural. My hair was that colour, before it started going grey at 40. I'm 60 now and it's all a sort of ashy blonde colour. I'm not complaining, it looks OK. 😁

Jade520 · 23/03/2025 09:01

Looks good OP! I couldn't be bothered with the time or expense to do mine though so it's going to gradually go grey,

HornyHornersPinkyWinky · 23/03/2025 09:04

Looks great OP, I’m glad you feel great.

I’m similar in that my hair looking nice definitely improves how I feel on a daily basis, which might seem ridiculous to some.

I’m only 40 and have been dying my hair for years as I went prematurely grey in my late 20’s. I’m now dark blonde, I dye my roots at home every few weeks and then get highlights at the hairdresser every few months. It a lot of upkeep but it makes me feel so much better.

i’d love to ket it grow out and not care, but realistically it looks awful on me personally - my best friend let her grey grow out over lockdown and looks fab, but she has sallow skin and hers grew out salt and pepper so looks really cool.
Whereas mine is more pure white, and I have pale skin with pink undertones so it just looks odd.

Notonyourjelly · 23/03/2025 09:06

Your hair is lovely OP. I coloured mine for years until I just couldn't be bothered and asked my hairdresser to strip all the colour out. It is now pure white and I love it so much. Isn't it great how the right colour and style can give us such a boost?

WoahThreeAces · 23/03/2025 09:06

I've been dying my hair since I was 15 😀 you do you 👍

IMissSparkling · 23/03/2025 09:07

I'm mid 40s and naturally grey. I get loads of compliments on the colour. Personally I think people in their 60s/70s look silly with obviously dyed hair.

monicagellerbing · 23/03/2025 09:07

Size 8-10. wow! Medal is in the post Hmm

Ilovelowry · 23/03/2025 09:09

I am the same op. As much as it galls me paying £140 5 times a year, I absolutely hate the grey roots especially around my jawline.

My mum still has highlights at 74 and has managed to pay for hers to be done through some very harsh financial times in her life. I must get my determination from her!

Weepixie · 23/03/2025 09:16

My goodness, don’t you love yourself. Or perhaps that should be my goodness, don’t you have a down on people who have grey hair. On second thoughts though - I think it’s the more if the former.

Just do what’s good for you, continue loving yourself so splendidly and don’t give the women who have chosen to let their hair go a beautiful grey a second thought.

Im 67, my natural silver grey hair colour is my crowning glory and Im so glad I gave up on my multiple visits to the salon about 7 years ago to let nature take its course. My hair has never looked as beautiful as it does these last few years.

soccermum10 · 23/03/2025 09:22

I've just lightened my hair too. During autumn/winter I go darker like reddish brown to brown. Yesterday, I got the golden auburn back out and feel very spring like lol 😆 It's amazing what a little thing can do 😁

Weepixie · 23/03/2025 09:27

Op, I’m so glad my hair is mine, and yours is yours.

All of you banging on about your lovely silver/white hair i have to say i think it looks absolutely stunning. The photo shows how stunning it can be. Spare a thought for those who never go fully grey and end up looking like a bad home dye job. This is why I get mine highlighted and low lighted. My mother is nearly 80 and she isn't fully grey and neither was my grandma at 88.
So to the pp who said she thinks it looks silly bear in mind that some of us never get the full grey experience and still try to look well presented.

Weepixie · 23/03/2025 09:38

@Ilovegoldies what you can’t see on the picture is the underneath of my hair at the back that’s not the silver grey the rest of it is. Its not salt and pepper, in fact I can’t describe it but it does make it look interesting though. 😉😆

Enigma53 · 23/03/2025 09:41

Bloody jealous you have hair. Mines all fallen out from chemo. I will be dying the instant it returns ( out of a box)

Yes, this is why I colour. My grey is weirdly patchy, concentrated to one side of the top of my head, and manages to look like I’ve got chronic dandruff or some strange disease.

Tolkienista · 23/03/2025 15:00

Thank you to everyone who's taken the time to comment, I've enjoyed reading them enormously.
To the person who said, don't you just love yourself...... absolutely not.
The point of my post was that it's illogical that I'm focussing on hair colour when I'm happy to let the rest of my body age naturally.
I think it's because hair frames your face and I suppose I honestly just feel better when it's coloured.

I would never ever look down on anyone who does things their way with their appearance, including hair colour, that's just not me at all.
Please keep your comments coming, I love the diversity.
As an aside, my mother is 96, she stopped colouring her hair when she turned 90!

It's a nice shade.

I'm enjoying my salt and pepper. No, it's not even but that comes through as silver streaks.

No didn't get that the op looks down on anyone.

Your post however is unnecessarily nasty.

Amotherlife · 23/03/2025 15:14

I colour mine too and I'm 64. I get highlights at the salon about two or three times a year and use a touch up colour at home in between. I couldn't just go grey, not without colouring my hair grey anyway, as I still have some dark brown bits, which blend in with the highlights. Plus I don't want to - colouring my hair keeps me looking younger. Grey would make me very washed out and tired looking as I have pale skin.

Easterbunnygettingsorted · 23/03/2025 15:17

I stopped dyeing mine exactly 2 years ago..
Recent hair cut..

Pandimoanymum · 23/03/2025 15:35

Well I think yours looks very natural, OP.
I'm 57, used to be a natural redhead which I loved and never dyed it, but I started when it began to fade. Now I kind of wish I hadn't as keeping it topped up is so expensive, I DETEST the roots showing but I really can't afford it as often as it needs (I have a disability that stops me from being physically able to dye my own at home, so I have to pay salon prices).
I've thought about just letting the colour grow out to see how grey I actually am now, but I can't bear the thought of that half -coloured, half -grey look for months, I really have a thing about it. It would make me feel unkempt and miserable.

PonyPatter44 · 23/03/2025 15:36

Well I don't even have a head, so all you people talking about hair should be grateful you have a head for hair to grow on. We're not all so lucky.
