How often do you use things like tofu and tempeh.
How many veggie meals do you have deliberately, ( rather than a veggie meal by default such as beans on toast cauliflower cheese for example)

No reason apart from being curious following on from aconversation with my friend this afternoon.

Tofu/Tempeh every 2/3 weeks maybe. Not sure what you mean as deliberately veggie. We probably eat vegetarian about 3/7 days.

Buttonknot · 22/03/2025 19:25

We have a meat free evening meal once a week - but we're not fond of meat substitutes, so it will be veg lasagne or veg fajitas or something, not tofu.

So I guess the answer to your question is - never.

Never use meat subs and rarely have meat free meals. We try to eat low carb high protein so meat and dairy are usually heavily involved.

Willoo · 22/03/2025 19:27

I only eat meat so I wouldn’t be able to cater for them and Before anyone comments my health has improved hugely

BruisedNeckMeat · 22/03/2025 19:28

Never.

TheCurious0range · 22/03/2025 19:28

I eat veggie dinners 2/3 times a week but Quorn disagrees with my stomach and I'm not a huge fan of tofu so it tends to be vegetable and/or bean/lentil based. I also love mushrooms so they feature heavily.

Tofu is not a meat substitute though.

i mainly eat vegetarian food at bine because my teen dd is vegetarian but have always eaten lots of tofu even when i ate meat. But I have spent time living in south-east Asia so love tofu.

TheMissingLinkHasBeenFound · 22/03/2025 19:31

We have vegetarian food probably 2-3 meals a week.
Like cheese omelette or red lentil and tomato soup or halloumi wraps, other veggie stuff we have is camembert, chickpeas, lentil dhal, bean chilli.

Don't use things like Quorn or fake meats

You can eat high protein and high low card without eating meat. Tofu, eggs, dairy, all sorts of legumes, nuts, etc.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 22/03/2025 19:32

We are veggie and we don't use meat substitutes. We do use tofu and tempeh, though, as we eat a lot of Asian food. Lots of beans and lentils too.

My dsis and family aren't veggie but probably eat veggie food around 3-4 days a week.

Wigtopia · 22/03/2025 19:34

I’ve been vegetarian for over 20 years and never cooked with tofu or tempeh!! I tend to just use vegetables, lentils and beans

lostintherainyday · 22/03/2025 19:35

We have meat about 2-3 times per week.

NicolaCasanova · 22/03/2025 19:36

We eat everything. In a week of dinners, we would have omelette either plain or with mushrooms, at least one pasta dish with tomato and pepper, at least one pizza with vegetable toppings, often vegetable lasagne (whatever’s leftover) and sometimes baked aubergines and courgettes with rice. Occasionally something like vegetable fajitas. We have fish twice a week and chicken once most weeks but other than that is all vegetarian, but rarely vegan (apart from soup and the baked veg.) as there are often eggs and sometimes cheese of some sort.

For lunch in the week, I have some sort of salad, often with hummus, but sometimes a tin of mackerel or tuna for variety. DH will have a sandwich with meat or fish and crudites( less keen on hummus and not bothered about making a salad just for himself) and the DC eat at the canteen…which pretty much has to have meat, fish or at least egg otherwise there are complaints (not from us!)

We never cook tofu or meat substitutes, I wouldn’t know how to and am not keen on the latter.

Not sure what you mean as deliberately veggie,
I meant deliberately chosing to go meat free rather than thinking ' oh we'll have cheese on toast or mac and cheese for tea,'

As a household, we never use "fake meat".

DH buys tofu if he goes to the Chinese supermarket, but I hate the stuff. Never heard of Tempeh.

We don't "decide" to eat veggie meals, but a number of meals we cook are meat free.

Bjorkdidit · 22/03/2025 20:08

I don't understand the distinction. I'm not vegetarian but eat lots of foods that are vegetarian or vegan because its just food.

It doesn't make a difference to the outcome if I have tofu or falafels because I like it or because I want to pat myself on the back for 'choosing' to eat a meal that happens to be vegetarian.

Sortumn · 22/03/2025 20:09

Almost never. Maybe a couple of times per year.

madaffodil · 22/03/2025 20:14

I tried tofu once.

🤑

Goldpanther · 22/03/2025 20:16

Breakfast is usually vegetarian by default, but I do try to have salmon at least once a week for breakfast.

It's probably been a few years since we have had a vegetarian meal intentionally for lunch or dinner.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 22/03/2025 20:17

Tofu and tempeh - never eaten either.

Often eat vegetarian meals because they're what I fancy, especially when I go out to eat. No idea what it would work out at over a week - maybe twice a week? I don't intentionally eat meat free, I just eat what I'm in the mood for. Just realised I've eaten no meat today, hadn't thought about it till now.

PaintDecisions · 22/03/2025 20:19

Tofu about once a month.

Quorn and tempeh - never. Can't bear them.

Vege meals at least three days a week.

CarrieOnComplaining · 22/03/2025 20:20

We have loads of meat free meals, dhal, chick pea and spinach curry, roast veg tart, things involving halloumi, veggie pasta sauces etc.

But not tofu - don’t like it, Quorn and other manufactured meat substitutes, no thank you!

MadamePeriwinkle · 22/03/2025 20:21

I try and eat veggie/fish main meals 2-3 times a week, and my lunches are often meat free by default.

My two closest friends are vegetarian so I will nearly always cook veggie for both of us if one of them comes round.

Often choose a veg curry over a meat one and same for filled pasta which I usually take on the nights I work late. Prefer veggie sausages to meat one on the whole as well.

All that said, I'm not a fan of tofu, tempeh or pulses and I wouldn't want to give up meat completely.
