How often do you use things like tofu and tempeh.
How many veggie meals do you have deliberately, ( rather than a veggie meal by default such as beans on toast cauliflower cheese for example)

No reason apart from being curious following on from aconversation with my friend this afternoon.

Never for both! Veggie meals are accidental and normally when it’s just me.

Meadowfinch · 22/03/2025 20:25

I never use tofu or tempeh.

I cook veggie fairly often, pasta with tomato &olive sauce, or mushroom risotto, or three cheese pancakes. Lots of veggie soups and bean & pepper fajitas

BassesAreBest · 22/03/2025 20:26

I never actively go meat-free, but probably eat more vegetarian / vegan meals than meals containing meat or fish.

Not keen on tofu or tempeh, though.

Not vegetarian, but rarely eat meat. I wouldn't and don't have any of those things like tofu etc. in the house. They sound vile! But since I haven't tasted them I really wouldn't know, but the look puts me off TBH.

My non meat diet (mostly) comprises fish, eggs, spinach and ricotta dishes, cheese, and veg/fruit. High fibre home made brown soda bread, real butter, whole milk and greek yogurt and porridge. I do take an iron supplement and a multi vitamin. Not sure I actually need them, but I do it anyway!

BlondiePortz · 22/03/2025 20:27

I don't see the point of tofu and also faking meat,, we sometimes have vegie pasta nad maybe the odd other non meat meal

TheChosenTwo · 22/03/2025 20:28

If I’m feeding myself I’ll usually make myself something veggie/vegan purely because it tends to be much quicker to throw something together and it taste good - I absolutely hate cooking and see it as an irritating chore so refuse to spend a minute more than necessary doing so.
Normally though Dh cooks and it’s always meat based.
Tofu, tempeh or quorn don’t darken our door 😂

FKAT · 22/03/2025 20:28

We have one meal a week that is meat free as a family. Usually pasta / pesto or tomato risotto or something.

I would have tofu / tempeh eating out but don't tend to eat it at home. So maybe a few times a year.

I would eat more meat free but DH cannot eat any legumes (beans, lentils, nuts) so it cuts out a lot of options. Also have teen boys who demand fish/meat.

nannyl · 22/03/2025 20:35

No veggie or vegans in my house.
My DH LOVES meat and definitely prefers to eat meat.
(I myself avoid dairy, but am not 100% dairy free. I was veggie for 7 years, and most days I get to tea time having only eaten "vegan" during the day, despite not being vegan)

I don't use tofu much at all.

But i do aim to make us a vegan meal ones a week (with beans / lentils / chick peas / pulses / mushrooms etc; NOT "fake meat"), and we all enjoy these meals. (although sometime my DH will grate some cheese on top, so his would then not be vegan)

If eating at a restaurant I am very likely to select a vegan meal from the menu for myself.

Lovelysummerdays · 22/03/2025 20:40

I’m not a fan of tofu / quorn. Half of dinners are probably vegetarian. Pasta with pesto, veggie stir fry. Lots of lunches are veggie I make big omelettes with sweet potato and chilli etc and cut wedges for lunch. I’ve no idea if they are accidentally vegetarian. More of a trying to eat a balanced diet than meat avoidance.

NotOnlyMercutio · 22/03/2025 20:45

I never use tofu, and I don’t even know what Tempeh is.

We have the occasional meat-free meal, a couple of days a week maybe, but I don’t think I ever cook anything vegan, I use cheese and eggs and butter a lot.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 22/03/2025 20:47

I can't stand tofu so we don't eat it. We do eat meat free meals a couple of times a week but DH doesn't like cheese or nuts so it tends to be things like veggie chilli or curry, or mushroom.and leek risotto.

backbritishfarming · 22/03/2025 20:49

Never.

RaininSummer · 22/03/2025 20:54

I am vegetarian and dont eat tofu or tempeh as I find it revolting.

GameOfJones · 22/03/2025 20:56

I'm a meat eater but roughly 75% of my meals are vegetarian. Mainly due to cost and I'd prefer to have much less but better quality and higher welfare meat.

Tofu probably once a month on average. It's great in a stir fry, the Tofoo extra firm brand is excellent cut into cubes and cooked in the air fryer. I never put meat in a stir fry. It's always tofu or peanuts (or both!)

I really like the vegetarian sausages from Lidl (made with chickpeas and veg..... can't stand the fake meat stuff.) We had those this evening and they're a standard meal in our house....as are things like falafel.

Fajitas are a popular meal for us too but always made with chickpeas and mixed beans for the filling.

If we have meat, I like that to be the main focus of the meal so am more likely to have vegetarian meals most of the time and then a really good quality steak with chips or a free range chicken for the roast at the weekend.

UnimaginableWindBird · 22/03/2025 21:05

I generally have tofu around once a week. I never eat pretend meat, but I rarely eat meat for breakfast or lunch, and probably between two and five evening meals a week are meat-free. I don't really understand the part of the question about veggie meals being deliberate or by default - I don't think "today I will eat meat" or 'today I will not eat meat but will eat eggs and dairy" or "today I will only eat plant-based foods". I just eat food, and meat isn't the default basis of my meals.

OurSis · 22/03/2025 21:06

We never have tofu or tempeh. I don’t think I’d like the texture of them, I was vegetarian years ago but never liked the meat substitutes either. They all have a texture of horrible processed meat products that I’d never eat anyway. We maybe one meat free meal a week, usually something like a pasta, curry or soup.
I’d eat less meat but my family are big protein eaters and struggle with too many pulses so I find it a bit tricky.

CarpetKnees · 22/03/2025 21:11

We don't ever consciously cook vegetarian unless catering for a vegetarian guest.
We might sometimes just fancy an omelette or egg and chips, or beans on toast or a jacket potato with butter and cheese or with beans, or maybe a soup lunch, but that is just because it is something we fancy eating, not a specific choice to "eat veggie".

We don't ever eat things like tofu and tempeh (unless served them when we are guests somewhere).

stillwaitingtobepaid · 22/03/2025 21:11

Mainly eat vegetarian and I do use quorn mince and pieces. I really like it.

wherearemypastnames · 22/03/2025 21:22

We tend to eat meat once a week - Sunday dinner
fish - one main meal and a couple of lunches ( tin tuna butties or salmon slices )
the rest tends to be veggie / vegan just because - think this week included tofu sweet and sour today , Mexican beans , egg and chips , mushroom risotto , lentil stew

zaxxon · 22/03/2025 22:00

Love tofu! It's delicious when marinated, covered in cornflour and shallow-fried.

I like Beyond Meat mince substitute when cooked with onions and mushrooms, for chili, lasagne etc.

I'm not vegetarian but both DCs are, so I only eat meat about once a month, invariably chicken. Fish almost never.

TheFlis · 22/03/2025 22:12

Newmeagain · 22/03/2025 19:31

You can eat high protein and high low card without eating meat. Tofu, eggs, dairy, all sorts of legumes, nuts, etc.

As I said, we eat a lot of dairy. Neither of us like tofu much, I don’t particularly like nuts and there are only so many eggs a person can and should eat. Meat is just easy, works for the diet and tasty!

PoppyBaxter · 22/03/2025 22:17

DH is often working away monday-friday, in which case I don't eat meat at all. It would never occur to me to cook it.

If he's at home, we'll maybe have 2 veggie evening meals a week.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 22/03/2025 22:22

We never eat tofu, but often eat meat free dinners - veggie curries, macaroni cheese, omelettes, fajitas, vegetable lasagne and so on.

DP was made redundant a few years back so we really cut down on meat then to save money and it stuck even when he got a new job. We often use small amounts of high flavour meat like chorizo in a meal rather than the meat being the main thing.

Mayflyoff · 22/03/2025 22:27

We eat tofu about once a week. Our meals don't contain much meat as DD doesn't like it much, but isn't vegetarian. We don't eat things like quorn or other fake meats. Few of our meals have much meat.

Fagli · 22/03/2025 22:30

Tofu is not a meat substitute or anything like quorn. It’s a key component of many Asian meals. We eat it a few times a month, we cook a lot of different cuisines. We are not vegetarian.
