How much for a weeks self catering?

I am thinking of booking a property we had before . It has four bedrooms but there are only two of us. I want to book it as I love the area and the house but it's £1350 for a week in April! Would this put you off? Is it outrageous? I feel guilty.

Depends on area but pretty standard price. April is probably peak season.

MarchHare339 · 22/03/2025 09:53

Lake district end of April

I have a 2 bedroom holiday let in the area and charge about £1200 for the week

I'm fully booked for next month apart from a couple of random dates so I’d say it seems about right to me.

my property sleeps 4 and I’m amazed at how many bookings are for just 2 people, but then I figure everyone is different, they might prefer sleeping apart, maybe just friends… I don’t judge !

One thing I’d really appreciate though when the house is under occupied is if the guest would say we don’t need linen in bedroom 2 / 3/4 Then I wouldn’t have to do a full change ready for the next guest which is really wasteful - but necessary just in case

Are there nice looking cheaper alternatives? It’s pretty late now for booking lakes accommodation end April. We always pay that much and more but we need 4-6 peoples worth of space.

Moveoverdarlin · 22/03/2025 10:13

If you’re paying for a 4 bed house when you only need one bedroom (assuming you are a couple, not friends) then it’s always going to be pricier.

mindutopia · 22/03/2025 11:37

That’s £192 per night. It would definitely put me off. We do Uk self catering holidays all the time and I really won’t pay more than £120 a night, but tend to aim for £90-100. There’s 4 of us and we need 3 bedrooms. We’ve stayed in some beautiful places. If you have the means, sure do it, but it wouldn’t seem good value for money to me compared to what else is out there.

MarchHare339 · 22/03/2025 12:19

It’s the particular area I like as Well as the house. No it isn’t good value, particularly as it has no WiFi!

Seems reasonable, I've paid double for a property I want and there's only 2 of us.

Comedycook · 22/03/2025 12:23

I wouldn't pay that for self catering...but I hate self catering. Would much rather go to a hotel or abroad...and I assume you don't have to wait for school holidays as it's for two adults so you can get much cheaper hols abroad in a nice hotel.

Rocknrollstar · 22/03/2025 12:59

That’s about what we pay these days.

NewNameTime2025 · 22/03/2025 13:00

Yea for a nice place that’s about right. It’s not a Haven caravan.

its crazy because you could go abroad at least bed and breakfast for that price, potentially all inclusive for a few hundred more.

faerietales · 22/03/2025 13:09

Why would you book a four-bed property for two people?

£1350 for a four-bed over Easter kind of time sounds about normal to me.

As I explained, it’s in a unique position and we like the house a lot.

But then you have to expect to pay a higher price for that...£1350 for a four-bed property which sleeps 4-8 people seems very reasonable.

What would you feel guilty for? Confused

Mirrorxxx · 22/03/2025 14:04

We often book a larger house for self catering holidays even if it is just the two of us and our dog. Usually means better living spaces and outdoor space

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 22/03/2025 14:04

A week in the lake district at Easter for a house with 4 bedrooms, sounds like a good deal to me.

Because it’s expensive for two people

So? If you can afford it, what does it matter?

Seems a really weird thing to feel guilty about.

Papyrophile · 22/03/2025 20:12

@MarchHare339 We're away next week. And we're not going far, but it is the holiday we didn't have last year. We have organised ourselves a luxury week in a lovely place, that sleeps 8, and friends are coming for three or four nights while we are there. It would be expensive for two people, but you like it, and nobody is going without anything important, why does it even register?

CarrieOnComplaining · 22/03/2025 20:47

If you love the place, the view, a place to spend time and you can afford it, then do it and enjoy yourself.

harijes · 22/03/2025 20:50

All relative surely.

pre children DH and I would do this for location.

However Wi-Fi would be a complete deal breaker for me.

which is it?

what’s your criteria.

Actually i had the most restful, amazing week there last time we went, once I adjusted to not being able to use my phone or the internet. I read six books and for the first time in years felt totally chilled. I generally have a lot of trouble with spending money if it isn’t ’a good deal’. I feel guilty and self indulgent. I think I need to address why that is.
