Coloured socks with multi-coloured skirt - I need a word for this.

If a multi-coloured skirt is dark blue, light blue, burgundy, and was planned to be worn with socks/tights that were light blue or burgundy, and you wanted to gently explain to someone why it didn't work, would you use the word "clash" or another word?

heldinadream · 22/03/2025 08:38

Why wouldn't it work?
Surely it's just not to your taste, but it may be the other person's taste, which is fine?
You can just say - it's not my taste but if you like it, wear it?

ElbowsUpRising · 22/03/2025 08:38

I don’t think clash would be right because it actually sounds coordinated (and something I’d do). But If not your thing then maybe “too much “would be more appropriate?

Indianajet · 22/03/2025 08:39

Sounds fine to me !

Surely they match, rather than clash? Why do you need to "gently explain" anything?

FreddoSwaggins · 22/03/2025 08:40

If you feel you need say anything, why dont you just suggest whatever you think is right.

I'd probably just leave them to wear what they want, so what do I know.

ScrewedByFunding · 22/03/2025 08:42

The correct phrase you're looking for is

'You look lovely.'

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 22/03/2025 08:42

I'm getting visions of Bubbles from absolutely fabulous.

EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness · 22/03/2025 08:42

Also confused why this classes as it sounds like it matches. As for saying something gently why the need to? If the person wearing it is happy with it and it's not inappropriate to the situation, like for a wedding or funeral or job interview, then it really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

LSGXX · 22/03/2025 08:48

Who are you offering this reflection to? That’s what’s key.

My daughters and I are all very close and honest with each other. We offer and receive blunt opinions all the time. Very welcome and meant lovingly and absolutely no problem.

I’ve got a friend who dresses like a bun fight in a charity shop meets Coco the clown and I tell her she looks fab. She does! It suits her wonderful personality.

I wouldn’t offer fashion advice unless asked.

DappledThings · 22/03/2025 08:49

Have you been asked your opinion on this outfit or just deciding to give it?

GreyAreas · 22/03/2025 08:51

'too matchy matchy' comes to mind, or 'colours work best with a coordinating neutral' (though I have no actual idea)

Yes. It's a school uniform question.

You are getting a lot of stick @rinkqueen
It wouldn’t be to my taste either.
What age is this person wearing the skirt ?
Is the skirt gathered or straight ?
What length is the skirt ?
Are the socks long or short ?

DappledThings · 22/03/2025 08:53

rinkqueen · 22/03/2025 08:52

Yes. It's a school uniform question.

Sounds like a great school uniform to me. Is it parents being consulted on changes to the uniform then?

AMouseThereOnTheStair · 22/03/2025 08:55

I think it sounds like it would work for a school uniform.

faerietales · 22/03/2025 08:56

It sounds hideous for a school uniform.

I would just say it’s a bit much and it would be better to have the tights in a colour that’s more muted and also easier to replace when they inevitable get ripped.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/03/2025 08:56

This is a very silly question. What you’ve described is colour coordination, rather than a clash. More information needed, if you actually need to express any kind of opinion about it.

IzzyHandsIsMySpiritAnimal · 22/03/2025 08:57

Is it guidance on wearing an existing uniform (e.g., school says you can wear that colour socks/tights) where you think it doesn't look good?
Ot is it working out a new uniform combination for a 'rebrand'?
It makes a difference to approach.

rinkqueen · 22/03/2025 08:59

Got it - the word I'm looking for is "unflattering".

OP posts:
Gineveryday · 22/03/2025 09:01

Speaking from experience it will be quite expensive as invariably they will get a hole in their tights daily and will need replacing frequently and coloured tights are a) not as easy to get hold of unless from the very expensive school shop and b) costa a lot more than a pack of 5 from the supermarket

AMouseThereOnTheStair · 22/03/2025 09:01

I tho k it’s a good point that the tights should be easy to replace. You should not have to be searching the land for burgundy tights.

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 22/03/2025 09:02

I'm not sure unflattering is the word. Surely dark blue tights would be better for a school uniform?

Is it a kilt?

Frostingle · 22/03/2025 09:04

rinkqueen · 22/03/2025 08:52

Yes. It's a school uniform question.

The word you are looking for is co-ordinated.

Assuming this is a checked skirt, both burgundy or light blue are appropriate co-ordinating tights. Especially for a teenager.

DiscoBeat · 22/03/2025 09:04

The argument I'd make is that all the different tights would be slightly different shades depending on the manufacturer so as a uniform I'd suggest black tights in the autumn and winter and bare legs if chosen in the warmer months.

Zippidydoodah · 22/03/2025 09:05

Wtf kind of question is this!?

school uniform? Why have you been asked your opinion? And UNFLATTERING?! On teenagers? Get a grip!
