Coloured socks with multi-coloured skirt - I need a word for this.

If a multi-coloured skirt is dark blue, light blue, burgundy, and was planned to be worn with socks/tights that were light blue or burgundy, and you wanted to gently explain to someone why it didn't work, would you use the word "clash" or another word?

It sounds like the skirt will have to be bought from a specialist supplier.

I'd push for a more sensible sock colour on cost grounds. Black, grey. Maybe navy blue at a push. Light blue or burgundy will be considerably more expensive and harder to find.

Better still, have a plain blue skirt too. Make things easier for parents.

Got it - the word I'm looking for is "unflattering".

That is also true!

Sounds lovely to pick out one of the skirts colours in the tights.

Maybe it’s a private school. The government has issued guidelines on uniform as of this year (or last, I don’t know) that it has to be affordable and that schools cannot demand a certain brand of something. Badges can be bought and ironed on to supermarket uniform items, for example. I don’t see Sainsbury’s stocking packets of light blue or burgundy tights. Maybe navy, at a push?

Coloured tights and check/plaid/tartan tights are fashionable.

It sounds great to me but whilst there are lots of coloured rights around at present this will not be the case in seasons to come.

Thighdentitycrisis · 22/03/2025 09:13

is the tights / socks part a choice for the students? I think everyone should havd the same colour.

ie: girl a wearing light blue tights next to girl b in burgundy ones I think it’s too busy.

if the skirt is acceptable why not suggest a neutral sock

It’s not unflattering at all (what a way to instil confidence issues in to preteens and teens 🙄) but it will be hard to replace coloured tights easily.

I had some tights exactly like that when I was 13. I wonder where I could buy some now? Total nostalgia trip!

Snag tights or Amazon.

The correct phrase you're looking for is

'You look lovely.'

This, absolutely 👍

What would the other sock be?

Oh for gods sake this kind of utter nonsense is exactly why our poor girls get caught up in the trap that they are must look a certain way in order to be acceptable to other people.

And I know you’ll get mums arguing the toss that their kid isn’t a slave to fashion they just like clothes and appearance and ‘fitting in’ is important to them - that’s fine , then they can do their clothes and make up on the weekends/after school.

It doesn’t matter is a school uniform is coordinated or flattering- it needs to be comfortable, functional and affordable.
