Would you trust this pregnancy test?

I'm sitting here half in shock, half in "nah, no way"

In the early hours of this morning, I was woken out of my sleep by severe lower stomach pain. Like period pain but much, much more intense. It didn't last any longer than about 15 mins and eventually faded away and I was able to get back to sleep.

In the morning I told DH about it (he was on night shift so wasn't there when it happened), and made a joke about how I actually wondered if I was having labour pains with a baby I knew nothing about, as the pain was that severe.

It was a joke, but for some reason has been playing on my mind. I don't know why, but I had a pregnancy test from a long time ago stashed in my bathroom drawer and took it. It did come up with a bold second line very quickly. However, here's the kicker:

  1. the last time we had sex was July last year (for various reasons)
  2. the pregnancy test has a "best before" date (for lack of a better word) dated 24th March this year.

I've been having periods every month. No signs of pregnancy at all. It's likely that the test is wrong because it's coming to the end of its shelf life, yes? I won't be able to get another one until the morning but it's extremely unlikely that I would be 8 months pregnant and not notice, isn't it? Isn't it???????

Fucking hell.

🙄 One of the following is true:

  1. OP has a defective test.
  2. OP has had sex that she forgot about.
  3. There's a star in the East, an angel talking to some very confused shepherds, and three wise men bearing gold, frankincense, and myrrh on their way.
  4. OP has a rare form of cancer.
  5. OP's husband has behaved inappropriately as I outlined.
Pretending that (5) isn't an option doesn't help OP.

I was having periods and didnt gain weight at all with my eldest. I was 6,5 months when I found out and that was by chance (pregnancy test taken in A&E to rule it out before an X Ray)

6 - she could be pregnant from July?

Either way, bit weird you went straight to calling her husband a rapist.

Sadly I agree.

She didnt, she simply pointed out that it was a possibility. I once woke up to my husband trying to have sex with me. Yes we are divorced.

PyongyangKipperbang · 21/03/2025 23:51

Tbh I would trust the test given that it is within date, and would be going to the hospital asap.

I didn't say he was. I said that some men behave like this. There's a difference between acknowledging a possibility and declaring something to be a fact. I did the former.

That's almost full-term. But yes, if somehow someone could not notice being pregnant for eight months, with the kicks to the diaphragm and tap-dancing on the bladder that I'm told that nearly-born babies do, then OP could be nearly full-term from July.

Yep. Unlikely but a possibility.
Probably more likely than her being raped in her sleep by her husband and not having a clue about it.

PyongyangKipperbang · 22/03/2025 00:06

Surprise full term pregnancies can happen, especially if the woman has a tilted uterus coupled with an anterior placenta. Its not common but not actually as rare as people think.

MrsPositivity1 · 22/03/2025 00:12

Good luck with the tests

Been84years · 22/03/2025 00:37

OK, I have an update.

All four of the Clear Blue tests came back negative. Not even a hint of a line on any of them. The nearly-expired test I took was a (cheap) pink dye test. No idea if that makes a difference but given that if I actually were pregnant I'd be so far along that Junior would be getting ready to vacate the premises, I'm going to say no it wouldn't matter what type of test I took at this stage (I know in early pregnancy pink dye tests are more reliable vs. Blue dye)

So, I don't know, the pink dye must have been defective. Still no idea what the pain was. Would you still think it's necessary to get checked out?

And bloody hell, no my husband has not been raping me in my sleep 🤦‍♀️

Perhaps it was an ovarian cyst? Very common. Most women have them. They usually go undetected but if they burst (less common but not rare) it can be really severe pain.

I had it happen to me. It was so painful - lasted about 15 mins. I couldn't even scream. I could only gasp. It was 4am, woke up to the most horrendous pain, on my right side but really low down just to the inside of my hip. DH had to carry me to the car and drive me to hospital. The worst of the pain passed on the drive. Then I was left with a dull ache. No idea what it was, so proceeded into the hospital and told after an exam likely an uncomplicated burst ovarian cyst. Sent away with painkillers and felt very sorry for myself for 24hrs. It did self resolve though.

I think women can have these to varying degrees depending on the size and location and the cyst and that will often dictate how much pain or not you have.

ThatLilacTiger · 22/03/2025 01:19

Are you absolutely sure it was a pregnancy test and not an ovulation test? Just because the cheap strip ones look very similar and ovulation pain is a possibility (mine is way worse than my period).

PyongyangKipperbang · 22/03/2025 01:21

@Been84years no one was saying he did but as I am sure you know, there have been a lot of horrific stories on MN over the years. Some of the women didnt know that they what their husbands did was abuse or rape. It was only by being informed on here that they learned that what was being done to them was wrong. It wasnt meant cruelly I am sure.

Dustyblue · 22/03/2025 01:27

Very glad to hear your update. I would've been freaking out too.

Also pleased to hear you are NOT the next Gisele. Blimey, some people love a panic 🙄

I don't think it's necessary to get checked out now, no, not with the very clear negatives. But if you have any more episodes of pain, I would, for that reason.

Cucy · 22/03/2025 08:09

That’s good news OP.

If the pain has now gone then it was probably just a trapped nerve or something and I wouldn’t worry about it.
If you get any more pain or the area is sensitive then I’d book a gp appointment.

I’ve never heard of whoosh, it definitely wouldn’t be available in my area.
I’m glad you were able to check without having to worry too much.

No, it wasn't meant cruelly. I'd rather suggest that possibility and be wrong than not suggest it and be wrong.

I'm glad that everything is OK.
