Would you trust this pregnancy test?

I'm sitting here half in shock, half in "nah, no way"

In the early hours of this morning, I was woken out of my sleep by severe lower stomach pain. Like period pain but much, much more intense. It didn't last any longer than about 15 mins and eventually faded away and I was able to get back to sleep.

In the morning I told DH about it (he was on night shift so wasn't there when it happened), and made a joke about how I actually wondered if I was having labour pains with a baby I knew nothing about, as the pain was that severe.

It was a joke, but for some reason has been playing on my mind. I don't know why, but I had a pregnancy test from a long time ago stashed in my bathroom drawer and took it. It did come up with a bold second line very quickly. However, here's the kicker:

  1. the last time we had sex was July last year (for various reasons)
  2. the pregnancy test has a "best before" date (for lack of a better word) dated 24th March this year.

I've been having periods every month. No signs of pregnancy at all. It's likely that the test is wrong because it's coming to the end of its shelf life, yes? I won't be able to get another one until the morning but it's extremely unlikely that I would be 8 months pregnant and not notice, isn't it? Isn't it???????

Do you have any other children?

I thought pregnancy tests stopped showing as positive after a certain point of pregnancy? (I might have that wrong though)

I thought this as well.

Waffle19 · 21/03/2025 21:13

Can we see the test?! Good luck either way OP!

It’s probably wind.

Didn’t realise wind could cause a positive pregnancy test 🤣

Beeches24 · 21/03/2025 21:52

Perimenopause raises hcg tbf

Would be very interested to know what A&E say.

I conceived in July so I'm expecting an April baby so very invested. Definitely would have know I was pregnant all along

Alittlebit9 · 21/03/2025 21:58

Not unheard of, but unlikely! Good luck 🤞🏻

It’s probably wind.

That would be some feat to give a positive result 😂

Scottishskifun · 21/03/2025 22:03

It is possible but rare known as a cryptic pregnancy.
The other tests will help maybe save 2 for First morning test.

TorieMJ · 21/03/2025 22:08

Oooh rooting for you op with the result you want

HiCandles · 21/03/2025 22:09

You need to see your GP on Monday, presuming no baby is born before that! HCG can be raised by certain tumours, sadly. Ultrasound essential, I think, to see what's going on. Sorry don't mean to scare you, just trying to point out the potential seriousness of the situation. I reckon pregnancy is far more likely, though.

MaryMary6589 · 21/03/2025 22:27

I hope you're OK xx

Bathnet · 21/03/2025 22:43

What happened with the repeat tests OP
?

WhiteWidowWithAttitude · 21/03/2025 22:52

Ok, I’ve just discovered this thread and I’m invested already. What’s happening OP? Have your other tests arrived or are you in the back of an ambulance with a surprise baby??? (Ambo here, and have seen it happen more than once!)

LookingAtMyBhunas · 21/03/2025 22:53

Could be ovulation, my ovulation strips used to come up positive when I was pregnant, maybe it works the other way round too?

Let us know when you can if you're OK OP. 💐

Brunocatmon · 21/03/2025 22:56

My partner had a concealed pregnancy some years ago, you couldn't tell she was pregnant by looking at her and she didn't know until she went into labour.

BertieBotts · 21/03/2025 22:58

The test isn't even expired, expired would probably mean it was less sensitive not more.

I think you need to call your GP on Monday or go to the nearest labour ward if the pains continue.

And no a pregnancy test wouldn't show up for ovulation.

WimbyAce · 21/03/2025 22:59

Wow good luck OP!

It's called the hook effect and apparently only applies some of the time. So not a given.

I feel that this comment is uncalled for. Yes, this does happen, unfortunately I know this from experience, however I would argue that when this happens it is almost vanishingly rare that the victim is unaware of it afterwards, for various reasons.

If OP is pregnant but can't figure out why, it's far from "uncalled for" to contemplate all possibilities.

it is almost vanishingly rare that the victim is unaware of it

It's when you get Tesco to send you something using Deliveroo or similar.
