Why do you spell my name wrong even though it's in front of you?

TigerRag · 20/03/2025 12:02

I get this all the time on Facebook. My name is in front of people and they still get it wrong. But why?

It's like having a name that ends in an A and putting an E on the end instead. (Julia instead of Julie for example)

I find I do this sometimes op eg I know a Claire and a Clare and I can’t not put an ‘I’ in. It’s headwrecking to me, it must drive her nuts! (I do change it after I realise most of the time- sometimes I don’t want to draw attention to it by editing)

BakedAl · 20/03/2025 12:08

I got a film processed recently and wrote down by name and email address for the scans. I told the guy that I was writing it because people always get my name wrong. Got the receipt, he had added an extra letter to my surname. 🙄

rumred · 20/03/2025 12:09

People spell and say my name wrong all the time. All the time. It's like a more common name but not. So people call me the common one. I do get irritated as I try to get people's names right.

Sal17690 · 20/03/2025 12:11

I hear you! My name is something like Louisa Edmondson. Often get Louise. Very often get Edmonds. Drives me mad.

Makebettermen · 20/03/2025 12:11

I really believe it's important to spell names correctly and I notice when they're wrong. I shudder when I realise I've done it, but I still do it from time to time.

I think it's becuase I "know" the name so I don't check.

Iknowaboutpopular · 20/03/2025 12:12

I have a first name that's fairly common but it has different spellings. And before I married, a hyphenated uncomplicated surname.
NOBODY EVER GOT MY NAME RIGHT!
Even in high school, with teachers who'd known me for 5 years, either my first or last name or both was always wrong!
I'm not bitter about it at all. I am.

kdmpj · 20/03/2025 12:12

I dunno but it's a cautionary tale to those naming babies right now. Simple, unambiguous names are the way to go IMO.

purplepandas · 20/03/2025 12:14

I hear you. Me too. It's signed off in my email, with my sign underneath, how can you get it wrong? I do and try and get others right as it bugs me so much.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 20/03/2025 12:15

I know just what you mean Tiger'sEye, it's quite annoying isn't it?

Yuopl · 20/03/2025 12:16

I think a combination of auto pilot and auto correct, I just apologised to someone yesterday for just replying on auto pilot with the spelling I’m used to

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 20/03/2025 12:17

I wear a name badge at work. Right there, on my jacket, with my name on. And people STILL get it wrong. They call me a slightly different name - we have someone working here who has that slightly different name and I wonder if she gets called by mine?

Tillybud81 · 20/03/2025 12:19

I get it, my surname is only 3 letters and not common, but people rarely use the right 3 letters. Its baffling

wherearemypastnames · 20/03/2025 12:19

Because letters can be hard to pin down and hard to remember - you see the a , you look down to write and you have forgotten what letter it was

some people’s head work differently to others

Vinorosso74 · 20/03/2025 12:22

My first name can begin with two different letters so I always say with "my spelling" and my surname can have an e on the end so I say "without an e". Yet people still spelling it wrong and years ago I was told I was being difficult for how my name is spelt! Neither are unusual names are spellings. I would argue mine is how you say it too.
People have replied to emails with the incorrect spelling, despite my name being on the email signature, said they can't find me on the internal email (try looking at the right spelling!) and have replied using a man's name which is similar to my name.
When I know there's variaton a spelling, I always ask probably as I'm so used to people getting my name wrong. Some people are just so involved with themselves they can't be arsed.

mindutopia · 20/03/2025 12:24

If typing, my guess is it’s autocorrect. I know someone named Phillipa, perfectly normal name, I call her Phillips all the time, which isn’t even a first name, because that’s what my phone autocorrects it to.

wherearemypastnames · 20/03/2025 12:27

i often get my own name wrong - the shortened version of my name because no one could
mange the full name - so I amnt being lazy with anyone else’s name - I just can’t see it

life is much easier if you just let these things wash over you

scrivette · 20/03/2025 12:29

My first name is always spelt incorrectly as there are several correct versions of it. However people spell my surname incorrectly too - they always add an S to it - no idea why as it doesn’t sound as if there should be an S at the end.

Eh?

Ann/Anne and Clare/Claire are pretty simple. They just happen to have two spellings.

HorrorFan81 · 20/03/2025 12:31

Both me and my husband have names that have alternative spellings (both of us have less common variations). We both get it constantly, even when our names are right in front of them eg on an email

I've learnt just to accept it. It annoys me more when people I've known 30 years do it tho 🤣

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 20/03/2025 12:32

Our son is called Keir. Four letters. Loads of people missing spell it. I don't think it helps that there's a huge building firm called Kier.

I thought when Keir Starmer came to prominence that my son would not have so many issues with people not knowing how to spell it, but apparently not!

LetMeGoogleThat · 20/03/2025 12:33

There's one person at work that always does this and it gives me a mini rage. My work email is my first name, a shortened version that everyone uses. But she insists on using the longer version, that has 2 spellings and makes up a third option that's just wrong.

That is absolutely no guarantee of having your name correctly used by others. See multiple complaints on here from Annes who get Ann, Clares who get Claire, Louisas who get Louise, Saras who get Sarah etc.

BrownieBlondie01 · 20/03/2025 12:36

LOL I have this with one specific guy at work - he constantly spells my name wrong, but in a way that isn't even a name?

He messes the last few letters up, eg if my name was Katie, he spells it Kaite? But it's weirder than that because at least that could be an alternative way of spelling Kate I suppose!

Very odd.

ComfortingSounds · 20/03/2025 12:36

I always replied back making sure I'd spelled their name incorrectly as well.

Runningoutofpatiencefucksandmoney · 20/03/2025 12:37

There are 3 different spellings of my Christian name, and people still get the wrong version. People that I've known for a very long time as well.
