Why do you spell my name wrong even though it's in front of you?

I get this all the time on Facebook. My name is in front of people and they still get it wrong. But why?

It's like having a name that ends in an A and putting an E on the end instead. (Julia instead of Julie for example)

As pp said though, Michael and Micheál have quite different pronunciations. If someone is pronouncing their name the usual way then it shouldn’t be spelt Micheál (Mee-haul).
But people do their own thing I know 😊

There is also very much the possibility that his parents spent years saying "no, it's Mee-Hall" and then gave up...

I frequently get called a particular random name that starts with the same letter as my actual name and shares a couple of other letters with it but is otherwise COMPLETELY different in sound, length, syllables, overall 'feel' etc. A bit like being named 'Teresa' but repeatedly being called 'Trish'. Or 'Catriona' being called 'Caitlin'.

I wouldn't mind but neither my name nor the name I'm repeatedly called are particularly common so it's not like an autocorrect thing. It baffles me 😳

I get this a lot too. With work people that I've worked with for years. Think Paula and Pamela. Possibly autocorrect, but I don't think so.

Throughout the whole of secondary school most of my teachers shortened my name and I hated it. For example if my name was Elizabeth, they called me Liz. Without my asking them to. Occasionally I had the temerity to say “that’s not my name M/rs X”. But they carried on doing it. It just made me feel as though I didn’t matter one bit. Friends and family do shorten my name but it’s Beth, rather than Liz.

Sorry I know this is about spelling but thought it was relevant because of how it made me feel.

EatingHealthy · 21/03/2025 12:50

My guess is they're dyslexic. The only people I know who regularly misspell my name (a simple name with only one spelling which they've seen written many times) are dyslexic.

iamnotalemon · 21/03/2025 12:54

Happens to me all the time. Whereas I make a conscious effort to get a name right, particularly if it’s unusual.

Try having my name! It's French and there's half a dozen ways of spelling it outside France, and I bet I've had every single combination, except usually the correct one.

50p and a bag of crisps goes to whoever can guess what my name is (and spell it correctly 😂)

Evelyne by any chance? As that’s my name ( French too)

I dunno but it's a cautionary tale to those naming babies right now. Simple, unambiguous names are the way to go IMO.

My name has three letters, there is only one way to spell it, people still get it wrong!

Lencten · 21/03/2025 13:14

When it's verbal I think it's to correct you.

I've had that people trying to corret me on my anme or my child name this with common names. Though surname is more understandable with pronunciation same as place and it's traditional fucked up English spelling not matching and throwing people off but some refuse to be corrected.

With written carlessness - or haven't noticed ( sometimes happens I don't notice all the letters have dyslexia)

Lencten · 21/03/2025 13:16

I gave my kids short names 4 or 3 letters and I think people shove extra letters in because they don't think there are enough.

MrsSunshine2b · 21/03/2025 13:20

My name isn't that common and can be spelled a few ways, and so many people get it wrong. It's right there in my email address and signature. I find it frustrating.

MavisPennies · 21/03/2025 13:21

Because I'm dyslexic and careless - soz!

HarryVanderspeigle · 21/03/2025 13:29

My surname has multiple spellings, with one being the most common. I watch people trying to write what I am saying, but their subconscious knows I must be wrong, so they just stop completely, or write it wrong anyway.

Spidey66 · 21/03/2025 13:34

All the bloody time!

I have a common name for women born in the 60s with 2 spellings, like Jane/Jayne. My middle name could get hyphenated to my first name. This name has two different variants, like Louise/ Louisa. The amount of times I have to say "it's Jayne with a y, and Louisa is my middle name, i go by Jayne." Added to that my surname could be a 1st name (think something like Grant or Ross but a feminine name). Often I get addressed in email as 'Dear Ross." I've also had people address me as Jayne-Ross!!!!

MadisonAvenue · 21/03/2025 13:38

We have two sons and the names we gave them and which are on their birth certificates are shortened versions of longer names, think names like Alex and Will. People like to lengthen them though and call them by the full longer versions of their names.

We also have a surname which most people misspell. It’s an Irish surname and not tricky but as soon as people hear it they seem to decide it should be spelt a certain way and even if you start to spell it out for them they race ahead and ignore what they’re being told, and get it wrong.

We were at a school awards evening a few years ago for our son and when he was called out to receive his award, he was called by the long version of his given name and an extra letter was added to his surname. No idea why the lady announcing the awards decided to do that as it was correct on both the certificate and in the event programme.

RightOnTheEdge · 21/03/2025 13:40

I've always had this problem. People spell it the male way even when I've filled in forms and written it very clearly in capital letters.

My passport came with the wrong spelling, and I only noticed recently that it's wrong on my bank account when people had trouble sending money me through online banking and when I applied for a loan and they said my details were wrong.

@whatsthecorrectspelling is it a version of Genevieve? With an accent on the e before the second v?

BatshitIsTheOnlyExplanation · 21/03/2025 13:46

I also have a French name. It's phonetic, but still misspelt a lot of the time.

Nottodaty · 21/03/2025 13:47

I have a rare name but there is only one way to spell it.

Numerous attempts :) but it doesn’t bother me to much!

Cerulean67 · 21/03/2025 13:53

My mum drives me mad with this. She's called (let's imagine) Anne and gets really annoyed when people spell it Ann, and yet if she refers to someone as, e.g. Joanne as Joanna, and I correct her, she's all 'same difference'.

I remember her telling me, when I was at school, that she couldn't be expected to remember the name spellings of 'all' my school friends with a specific name because I had 'so many friends with the same name'. There were precisely two, e.g. a Joanna and a Joanne. 😂

flatroof · 21/03/2025 14:01

I'm a Victoria, always called Tory for short. Work for a global company and am called Tony more than 50% of the time. Off to change my username now as with that info and my last couple of posts, it's very identifying!

RickiRaccoon · 21/03/2025 14:04

I gave my kids very easy to pronounce and spell names for this reason. I vetoed my DH's suggestion of Madeleine, for example, because of too many ways for it to go wrong.

I try and be careful but I do it occasionally if there's a more common variant, eg Anne-Marie instead of Anna-Marie. I also have real trouble with my brain remembering if someone is Kirstie or Kristie and Kirsten or Kristen.

ChipsnGraveee · 21/03/2025 14:07

My name is something like Vicky with the Y. I sign off every email with it and regularly people reply with ‘ie’ on the end - Vickie … it’s right there in front of you and you’ve known me for years!!
