Car park and accommodation Heathrow

We are travelling to New York in July at 8.25am from Terminal 5. We live in the Midlands so I thought a hotel would suit us better, but I’m also going to have to drive down.

Does anyone have any recommendations or suggestions as to how best to drive and stay? Obviously when we get home I’ll also be driving back.

Any ideas would be really appreciated!!

There are park and ride hotels out there where you park and get a room together. It probably works out cheaper than doing it separate - google them.

Remember if you are in an older car it might breach the ULEZ requirements and you will need to pay for that.

I don't know about car parking, but there are some surprisingly affordable hotels on the airport grounds attached to some of the terminals. I usually get a room for about £85. It's very comfortable and clean, and I'm usually at check-in, to a different terminal from the hotel, in under 20 min.

Thank you.

This does not help with parking but we recently flew from terminal 4 and stayed in the premier inn which is connected by a covered walk way - 10 mins or so- all for £ 48.
we took the train to London the evening before and used the Heathrow express - very efficient.

I tend to park in their official long stay car parks and stay in a hotel inside Heathrow. They are more expensive. But by the time you add the taxi from the parking to the hotel outside Heathrow then the price is quite similar and so much easier

minnienono · 19/03/2025 13:20

I would recommend using public transport if you can or paying for an extra night after the holiday before flying, I’ve driven after flying transatlantic and I’ve always been shattered

Pinkjenny · 19/03/2025 14:51

I’d love to do that but I’m actually back in work the next day so we need to get back. Thank you for the replies! I’ll look into all of this. I’m trying to make it as stress free as possible so we don’t start arguing as this is a trip for me and dd for her 18th Confused

Sofitel Terminal 5 often has rates including parking and is connected to Terminal 5 , its 5 minutes walks. Otherwise we use short stay Terminal 5.

Pinkjenny · 19/03/2025 14:55

I’m not even sure what time we need to check in, our flight is at 8.25am. But given it’s probably two hours from me, I think I’d prefer to stay over the night before.

As another thing to consider - some airlines offer baggage drop the night before for early flights if you're staying at an airport hotel.

Pinkjenny · 19/03/2025 14:59

Oh that’s also really interesting. The best option I’ve seen so far is a hotel and then a short drive to a park and ride, which seems feasible.

From memory it used to be 60 min latest check in for Longhaul out of T5, but you’d need to check the up to date info which should be on ba.com.

Edit to add: Given your timings you should be able to check in hold bags night before.

Don’t know how familiar you are with Heathrow but from experience TBH I’d seriously recommend parking the car up long stay somewhere the night before and leaving it…then use a hoppa/pods/uber/tube or whatever in the AM from chosen hotel to T5 simply to avoid too much faffing around repositioning your car and then waiting for car park shuttle buses etc given the time of day…

We usually stay at the Radisson Blu Edwardian or Radisson Red. We book a room and car parking all inclusive. The Red is slightly nearer the airport but both are on the main road with loads of buses 24/7. We usually get a taxi, it’s about £20.

Yep, that’s what I used to do when I did early departures out of Heathrow….£20 sounds like the normal rate, easy to arrange and cuts out a lot of the messing around with Hoppa buses (which aren’t cheap, or certainly didn’t used to be) or repositioning a car…

The Thistle is rather tired, but for convenience with a car, you really can't beat the POD parking and Thistle combination. I park over by the fence to the Thistle, just take a bag in which I've put the next day clothes and a second set of toiletries, walk through to the hotel, sleep, then sling that bag in the car and pick up my suitcase from the car. Less than 15 minutes from hotel room to check in desk in my experience and it is a very easy out from POD on your way back as no waiting for shuttle buses

Pinkjenny · 19/03/2025 16:18

Not sure if I’m doing it wrong, but it looks like 4 days park and stay at the Thistle is £853!

OP posts:
CMOTDibbler · 19/03/2025 18:35

Do it separately - so go on the official Heathrow parking, then search around for the cheapest stay at the Thistle

Pinkjenny · 19/03/2025 18:36

Ah, ok! I’ll have a look.

The other option which I have done in the past is to stay at the budget Ibis at Beaconsfield services on the M40 and then business or Pod parking at Heathrow as the Ibis is usually very cheap and its very quick round to Heathrow

BetsyJameson · 19/03/2025 21:51

We always stay at Sofitel as it includes parking and you don’t even have to walk outside, only 5 minutes from hotel to terminal 5.

Pinkjenny · 19/03/2025 22:46

Thank you for the suggestion but that’s £872, I’m not looking to pay almost a thousand pounds for one night’s stay and to park my car if I can avoid it.

I came to say that. We stayed there and it was really easy.
Book via Holiday Extras to get the best rates.

Pinkjenny · 19/03/2025 22:52

Great tip for Holiday Extras, that’s coming in at £359.

Then look around for discount codes. You can usually get an extra 10 to 15% off on top.
