  1. a day out ?
  2. a restaurant ?

Just for a fairly normal dinner or day out with the kids, nothing super special or once in a lifetime.

I was talking about it with friends today and was quiet surprised how far apart our answers where so I’m wondering which of us was the outlier 😂

Couple of hours max for a day out and 45 minutes ish for a restaurant, but only if it’s somewhere very special!

SparklyBrickViper · 17/03/2025 19:51

I regularly travel 50 miles to do go for lunch/dinner with friends (each way).

wheretoyougonow · 17/03/2025 19:51

I’m going to answer this in timings instead of miles if that’s ok.
Day out up to 1 1/2 hours ideally.
Restaurant up to about 3/4 hour.

Obviously depends on the circumstances but that’s my ideal (ish)

SquigglePigs · 17/03/2025 19:52

I think it's very dependent on the age of any kids involved and how happy they are being in the car.

DD is 6 and doesn't love being in the car for ages. We have a National Trust property with a fabulous play area about 40 minutes from us that we go to regularly in the summer, and a farm park a similar distance so that's about our standard on a regular basis. I don't think I'd question up to an hour for a family day out and we've done longer for a more special one. When she was smaller the 40 mins was pretty much our limit unless we could drive at nap time.

We've pushed it to 1hr 20m or so to meet up with friends but I think that would be about our limit unless we could stay late enough for her to drop off to sleep in the car on the way home.

For a restaurant probably about 20 mins if it's just me and DH (with or without DD). We can get to two city centres from ours in that time.

Having said that, I drove 2.5hrs each way for a special birthday lunch for my cousin but that was pretty kids and definitely a one-off!!

Littletreefrog · 17/03/2025 19:53

2 hours for a day out. 1 hour for food if it was good or somewhere we particularly wanted to go. But I grew up in the middle of nowhere so had to travel for things. DH grew up in a city and thinks this is crazy (but still comes)

Seawolves · 17/03/2025 19:54

Isn't it also dependent on where you live? Out here in the sticks most things are an hour's drive away so a day out can be up to a two hour drive and a decent meal is probably about 90 minutes away.

Buttonknot · 17/03/2025 19:55

Day out - an hour and a half each way
Dinner - 45 mins for a really nice place

AlwaysFreezing · 17/03/2025 19:55

Half an hour max for a restaurant.

Day out, 2 hours max, but preferably less.

My son is at uni and the drive is 2 hours each way unless there's traffic/an accident. We're always pretty knackered when we do it in a day and spend 4/5 hours in the city with him.

ThejoyofNC · 17/03/2025 19:56

Day out up to 3 hours, any longer and I'd want to stay overnight.

Restaurant up to an hour. If there was somewhere I really wanted to go that was further away, if have to find other things nearby to make a day of it.

SleepingisanArt · 17/03/2025 20:03

3 hours for day out (though have done 4 each way!)
2 hours for a good restaurant for lunch.

BendingSpoons · 17/03/2025 20:03

I don't like driving more than 1 hour for a day out unless it's really special or we are meeting people.

Dinner as a family generally not more than 30 mins drive, unless meeting someone.

We live somewhere where there are plenty of options in that time frame, so no real need to go further.

DuesToTheDirt · 17/03/2025 20:07

Kids are grown up and not relevant.

I live in a city, with lots of restaurants. So I'd say 15 min drive, or more likely I'd get a bus or walk so I can have a drink.

Day out - maybe 1.5 hours.

NewYearNewDietAgain · 17/03/2025 20:23

1/ anything more than 2 hours and I’m booking a Travelodge so making 2 days out.

2/ no more than 30 minutes unless it’s for a special occasion and even then only maybe 49/45 minutes.

madaffodil · 17/03/2025 20:41

Anything up to around 100 miles each way for a day out with however long that takes, and probably about a 15 mile radius for a restaurant.

I went to an event yesterday that was 89 miles each way according to Google maps.

Ah that’s really interesting that your the only one (so far) that would travel further for a restaurant than a day out!

My idea of how far it’s normal to drive is definitely skewed then 😳😅
I thought my pals were just homebodies

Food out, no more than 30mins. Day out up to 2hrs away

Overhaul54 · 17/03/2025 20:53

Mine is 2.5 and whilst very doable that’s as much as I can drive and still have a nice day.
I agree on less than 45 mins for a meal .

Solaire18381 · 17/03/2025 20:57

Day out, about an hour. Unless it was a specific theme park or something, as the nearest to us is about 2 1/2 hours away.

Restaurant, 30 mins.

Songbird54321 · 17/03/2025 20:59

I would maybe do 45 minutes to an hour for a day out unless a special occasion but we have lots on the doorstep.
Food wise maybe half an hour, getting there isn’t an issue but I’d hate a long journey home when I’m full as a gun

Ohthatsabitshit · 17/03/2025 20:59

3 hours ish for either.

sunshineandshowers40 · 17/03/2025 20:59

Day trip a couple of hours. Dinner half a hour but would drive further for a special occasion.

I read it as 3 quarters of an hour for the restaurant!

same as many others, I’d do up to 2 hours for a full day out but usually they’re about an hours drive and up to an hour for a great restaurant.

OreganoFlow · 17/03/2025 21:13

40 minutes drive for a day out - more if it's like a road trip to several destinations, but I'm not driving hours out of the day to go to one place.

20 mins cycle for a restaurant, I wouldn't drive to one at all unless the weather was appalling. But we live close to loads of good restaurants and my kids are good cyclists.

This. It would have to be a very good day out and a very good restaurant for me to drive that far - but I would do it

MarketSt · 17/03/2025 21:26

Day out we’ve done 3.5 each way. But that’s only if we’re splitting the driving. 2 hours otherwise.

Restaurant 30 minutes ish. We have lots of restaurants closer than that so no need to go further just for food.
