How far would you drive for..

  1. a day out ?
  2. a restaurant ?

Just for a fairly normal dinner or day out with the kids, nothing super special or once in a lifetime.

I was talking about it with friends today and was quiet surprised how far apart our answers where so I’m wondering which of us was the outlier 😂

Max for day out is 2 hours. We may do it once every couple of months, if the weather is nice the nearest beach/coast is 1 1/2 hours away.

We live in outer London but even to get to Central London is 45 minutes by train.

Restaurant - not more than 1/2 hr or the train (see above).

Day out, about an hour. Unless it was a specific theme park or something, as the nearest to us is about 2 1/2 hours away.

Restaurant, 30 mins.

Another who read @wheretoyougonow 's post as meaning 3/4 of an hour (ie, 45mins).

Like other posters, I think this is a "it depends" situation.

I live in a big City with thousands of places to eat within a very short radius from my house, so I wouldn't travel and distance (or time) for something to eat.

OTOH, I live a long way from the sea, but I LOVE being by the sea, so I'd be prepared to travel 3 hours for a good seaside place.

But, for a general day out I'd probably not want to go more than about 1hr and 1/4. Again, because it is easy for me to visit many, many places within that distance.

I have a friend who lives in a remote place in Scotland though who has to drive about 50mins to the nearest shop. If she wants a restaurant, or a day out, she HAS to travel for a considerable journey.

CarpetKnees · 17/03/2025 22:03

@Bearybasket - How far would you travel then ?

GreatTheCat · 17/03/2025 22:04

Anything over 2h needs an over night stay.

dialfor · 17/03/2025 22:06

For a day out I would travel a couple of hours but I wouldn’t drive it I would use the train. I struggle to drive for long periods now, so avoid where possible.

I’m not fussed about restaurants so probably around 30 minutes, I travel that to the city most days anyway.

Fizbosshoes · 17/03/2025 22:10

1.5-2 hrs for a day out
1 hr ish for a meal. (Although that's more about convenience for meeting people rather than the actual restaurant)
We've got lots of reasonable restaurants within walking distance or 1 stop on the train.

3 hours for day out (though have done 4 each way!)
2 hours for a good restaurant for lunch.

Eight hours driving for a day out?? That’s the whole day spent driving to and from the place you’re ostensibly spending time at??

Haribosweets · 17/03/2025 22:14

1 hour day out and 20 mins restaurant. I'm the only driver and hate that I have to do it all!

mondaytosunday · 17/03/2025 22:15

Three hours max for day out, an hour or so for a meal, two if really special.

ScarletWitchM · 17/03/2025 22:17

Day out max 1 hour drive and to eat at a restaurant no further than 30mins drive

NC10125 · 17/03/2025 22:17

I think it depends on the circumstances.

So I'd regularly happily drive about 90 minutes each way for a day out, or 30 minutes for a restaurant with the kids.

But I'd happily travel much further for either in order eg to meet friends half way or go to a birthday lunch for someone I cared about.

adviceatthislatestage · 17/03/2025 22:24

Ha ha, usually I’d say around an hour each way for a special meal and 2/3 for a day out. But having just spent two weeks in the US with DBro (he lives there), I’m not so sure. He suggested driving 100 miles for some tacos (Nany’s Tacos in William’s Arizona , if anyones interested) and it was definitely worth it. The card and roads are set up for driving long distances though.

Am back in the UK Wednesday and have suggested to DH that we drive to Norfolk to celebrate my return. We are in Surrey…I have a feeling it ain’t gonna happen 😂

Bearybasket · 17/03/2025 22:44

We do about 4 hours for day out, occasionally a little and about 2.5 hours for a meal but we’re remote so there’s not really anywhere to take the kids for day out within an hour of us.
We do have a few more options for eating out localish but we just enjoy food enough to feel it justifies the drive I guess 😅

It’s fairly easy if you start early and we usually swap so someone drives there and the other drives back
We organise the night before and leave about 5/6 to arrive 9/10, spend the day and usually finish off with dinner at about 5/6 and arrive home 9/10. Chuck the kids into pjs if they weren’t wearing them for the drive home, sometimes get a wee supper of toast and into bed.

I wouldn’t drive for food at all, but I live in London so don’t need to. (I’d probably not bother often if I lived rurally, but I like my own cooking.)
Day out 2h or so.

Differentstarts · 17/03/2025 23:02

A restaurant wouldn't drive as would want to drink so either walking distance or upto 10/15 mins in a taxi. A day out up to 2 hrs

dizzydizzydizzy · 18/03/2025 09:13

Depends on the day out. For something unusual or very aligned to my interests- maybe even 3 hours. For a normal day out, probably an hour-ish.

For a restaurant, probably 30 mins max unless I was meeting some friends and it was the midpoint between us, so we each had to drive an hour, say.

wheretoyougonow · 18/03/2025 09:39

I did indeed mean 45 minutes not 3-4 hours. I would be so hangry 😂

mindutopia · 18/03/2025 09:42

Probably 1.5 hours for each. We regularly drive an hour for things, but definitely might on occasion go as far as 1.5. Maybe for something really special, like to meet friends who are only around for a short time we might drive further. Drove 2.5 hours each way for a gymnastics competition for dd a couple times lately, but I wouldn’t want to do that far regularly.

JBJ · 17/03/2025 19:50

Couple of hours max for a day out and 45 minutes ish for a restaurant, but only if it’s somewhere very special!

Same.

But when I lived in Australia we thought nothing of driving into the Melbourne CBD for 90 minutes to eat at a nice Italian we liked then back again.

DappledThings · 18/03/2025 09:50

Couple of hours each way for both. It's about 2 hours to my brother's house and can easily take more than 3 if the M25 is fully M25ing. Usually do it as a day trip rather than staying over. I like driving.

nottoplan · 18/03/2025 12:20

Day out would be up to 4 hours to somewhere special but usually around 2 21/2 hours , for a meal out up to 2 hours but usually a bit less .
no children, just my DP & myself
