Do you remember what the first thing you won on an eBay auction was?

Think it was around the early 2000s and I successfully won a bundle of films. Robin Hood prince of thieves, Sense and Sensibility and Truly Madly Deeply (I was going through an Alan Rickman crush at the time). All on VHS 😳.

Some Laura Ashley curtains - about 20 years ago. They were quite a rare design and the auction was hotly contested. I've just resold them as I'm renovating. My biggest purchase was a grand piano.....

Tickets to Thomas the Tank Engine's birthday event at Hatfield House in about 2008. Bought them at great expense and the event was utter shite.

Wish44 · 15/03/2025 17:05

A mini disc player… what even happened to those? 2001.

my second thing was a pair of shoes…. That turned out to be a baby size not an adult size 😂. I kept them 10 years until I had kids 😂

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 15/03/2025 17:11

@Wish44 I'd forgotten minidisks were even a thing! IIRC the iPod killed it stone dead.

Thunderbird 2 toy in 2006 for my son's 5th Birthday as he absolutely loved Thunderbirds at the time

Did anyone else used to have a bit of an online chat with some sellers on eBay years ago? They used to be a friendly lot in the past and often me and the seller would exchange a few pleasantries. Not like it now.

It still is on my stall, I've had some lovely chats with some of my buyers lately 😁.

Probably some bike parts or books/dvd esp for my daughter. Love eBay. Saved me 100s of pounds and has entertained my daughter constantly.

Ihateboris · 15/03/2025 18:07

A Louis Vuitton bag which was an absolute bargain...but turned out to be a fake! Lesson learnt 🙂

Yeah I've been there 🤦. Swiftly came to the conclusion that if something seems like too much of a good bargain then there's probably a reason why...

Exactly...you live and learn 😃😃

Tickets to see The Calling in 2003/4.

Back in the day before horrendous ticket prices and scalpers and tickets could be sold on ebay.

A bob the builder dress up outfir and tool box for my son in 2005

TheeNotoriousPIG · 15/03/2025 19:16

A first-edition Chalet School book. I blame Mumsnet for that.

Ilovelowry · 15/03/2025 19:20

A painting of a nude woman. It's still on the fireplace mantel in one of our rooms! Think it was 2004.

Ilovelowry · 15/03/2025 19:22

Also, I worked in IT for a high St Bank early 2000s. In 2001 I went to a work event at IBM on the southbank where we had a talk from an ebay exec. It was really interesting, I'd never heard of ebay until then... And I'm still using it now!

Storyteller cassettes and magazines that I had loved as child in the 80s.

I paid far too much for them but I was giddy and nostalgic and got carried away.

Also bought a load of old Ladybird and Famous Five books. I was very excited by Ebay at first.

eBay+ nostalgia can have a dreadful effect on the bank account!

I've managed to rebuild my collection of 90s magazines (Sugar, Bliss and J17) but it would've been a whole lot better for my bank balance if I'd never chucked them in the first place 🤦.

@Ilovelowry Ooh interesting. Thinking back now I can't remember how I first found it, possibly through Google. According to my account I've been a member since 2003, so god alone knows how much crap stuff I've brought in the last 22 years!

My wedding dress! 1950s navy slub silk with a bow in the front, a boat neck and 3/4 sleeves. For the princely sum of £26 inc p&p. I was so so pleased with it.

LunchtimeNaps · 15/03/2025 22:45

Mine was a teddy ornament and I never got it.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 15/03/2025 23:01

A game of Subbuteo for DH, then had a very funny exchange with the seller who offered me some teams as well which I also bought. Late 2001.

Ifonlyiweretaller · 15/03/2025 23:06

A Christian Dior Saddlebag - and of course it was a fake…

MrsAvocet · 15/03/2025 23:11

I remember the first item that I bid on, but I didn't buy it in the end. It was a burgundy velvet tutu that I wanted for my DD for a dance competition. I got into a real bidding war with someone and nearly spend far more than I had originally intended. Fortunately I came to my senses before it was too late and realised that I was bidding far too much for something I'd never seen and wasn't even guaranteed to fit. I didn't even want it that badly, I was just angry about being outbid! So I dropped out. I bet the seller was happy though as the price the other bidder finally paid was quite high.

CointreauVersial · 15/03/2025 23:14

I do remember!

2005 - I bought a dark red Next cardigan. I paid about £4 for it, and I was thrilled about how cheap it was. It's still in my wardrobe, although it doesn't get out much nowadays.

Soon after that, I bought a couple of Denby plates to replace ones from our wedding dinner service that I'd broken. Oh, I was thrilled with that - a proper bidding war.
