In Sainsbury's today. Chocolate/ Easter egg isle.
Two young adults looking at Easter eggs.
One says to the other " l wish the fu**ing Government would make it's mind up about Easter and have it on the same date every year like Christmas.
( Can't educate the ignorant)🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️

OP posts:

TBF. I'm not religious at all I agree. Christmas is on the same day every year. Why not Easter?

FloreatE · 13/03/2025 20:29

The days of the week are significant for Easter because it's tied in with the Sabbath. Hence Good Friday as the day of Christ's crucification and his resurrection on the third day (Sunday). It moves around because it's linked to a lunar calendar (Passover) hence the March-April window. A fixed date would not work.
I'm sorry if that annoys the non-religious but since Easter is the chief festival of Christianity I think keeping it at Friday-Sunday is not unreasonable. And if it's always a certain day of the week it can't be a fixed date.

@ItsFridayIminLoveJS also how do you know these young adults were "ignorant".
They might not be Christian so don't know the full "rules" about Easter.

I'm not a Muslim but I know the dates for Ramadan and Eid vary because of the lunar calendar. You don't have be of a particular faith to ask a question (or use Google).

That wouldn't make them any less ignorant?

Depends if you use that word as a judgement and in a negative way. If someone doesnt know something, they dont know something, I would wager quite a lot of the population dont know about the made up rules about easter and its dates.

Most people dont know why christmas day is on christmas day

Well it seems the people the OP saw in the shop were asking questions in a way - by talking to each other !
The OP doesn't know what happened next. They could have gone straight to Google to find out the reason why the date isn't fixed. Or gone home and asked a family member.
Who knows?
I still think (as I said upthread) this thread has the vibe of a "lets laugh at other people" thread which there has been a lot of on Mumsnet lately.
Edit : in fact the OP doesn't seem to have come back to the thread.
So I'm out.
Bye all 🐥

So they’re ignorant of those things. It’s just a fact.

As an aside, this kind of thing really demonstrates why schools should, first and foremost, ensure the children have a thorough understanding of Christianity before moving on to other faiths. It underpins a huge amount of our way of life, institutions, our culture, literature, art, music and history.

In Scottish state schools Easter break is the same fortnight every year. Seems to work!

Not quite.

last year we were 1st - 12th April

this year it’s 7th - 21st April

Jk987 · 13/03/2025 20:57

The thing is, it's not just a religious festival anymore and hasn't been for decades. It's for anyone to enjoy. It's naive to think that it's for avid Christians only. The state of religion these days, thank God (excuse the pun.)

Ddakji · 13/03/2025 19:28

And they have the time off for it - I’m not suggesting we cut the Easter Bank holidays.
We aren’t a Catholic country and I don’t see why we need to operate as though we are, and I’m a Catholic. My mum certainly didn’t keep me off school when our school did this.

School holidays should work on the basis of what is best educationally, not what’s best for the odd Catholic. Plenty of people from other faiths have to get in with it without having a two-week holiday for their major festivals.

But we are a Christian country and the Church of England, mostly follows the same doctrine.

pizzaHeart · 13/03/2025 21:11

I think they were joking. I could have told something like this to DH (except f* ) but the rest of it - easily. I wouldn’t worry about modern youth so much, all primary school usually cover Easter origin and most of secondaries as well.

Pieceofpurplesky · 13/03/2025 21:12

Ddakji · 13/03/2025 17:38

What I wish is that schools wouldn’t base the school holidays around Easter. Just make the sprint and summer terms the same length and if Easter falls in a term, so what?

Many don't now. We have spring break - always the first two full weeks in April (NW uk)

soupyspoon · 13/03/2025 21:12

What do you mean by Christian country, we're not a religious state, with the vast majority of people not being particularly religious.

TickingAlongNicely · 13/03/2025 21:16

Our school Easter holidays aren't at Easter this year... they have two weeks off, go back for a week then have a long weekend

That sounds much better! Shame this doesn’t happen everywhere (I’m in London).

We are a Christian country, we have a state religion, the Church of England. Yes, many people are secular but we are not, constitutionally speaking,
a secular state.

RandomUsernameHere · 13/03/2025 21:23

I don't think they were particularly ignorant. Also it's "aisle" and "its".

Andabottleofrum · 13/03/2025 21:28

I live in a very Catholic place. Our Spring holiday is always the last week of April and the first week of May.

Good Friday and Easter Monday are both bank holidays.

So this year our school holiday starts on Good Friday, and everyone is complaining about it!

sallydoodlecat · 13/03/2025 21:41

This is an interesting article about it. www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zn2njhv

HighlandCowbag · 13/03/2025 21:48

Our education authority or council or whoever it is has the Easter holidays for 1st 2 weeks of April this year. Means we got a really cheap holiday which is fab as we wouldn't have been able to afford to go otherwise.

I don't want them to set a fixed date otherwise holidays will go up even more!

Where I live in Scotland, the ‘Easter’ holidays are always the first two weeks in April, regardless of when Easter actually falls. Good Friday is then an extra day off if it’s outwith that fortnight.
I can see pros and cons of it.

The Church of England is the Established Church in England, not Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

Interesting - is that the same all over Scotland then? Quite a few years back I am fairly sure it used to be the same two weeks. I’m a bit ancient though

Needmorelego · 13/03/2025 17:19

@ItsFridayIminLoveJS who was it that decided Christmas Day will be a fixed date though?
Was it the church or the government?

You do realise that Christmas Day is on the same date all around the world. Why would the UK government have such influence on other countries?
