I gave up SW last summer after years of going and not losing. I went because it was a social event to me as made friends there and I was on the social team which I enjoyed. I started calorie counting in January and have lost more in 2 months than I did with 3 years at SW!
I am finding I am eating what I want (even if it's a cake for 300 calories) but I keep within the calorie targetbl set. On SW I found the free food hard to eat a lot of as they kept saying to eat 3/4 of speed with every meal which I couldn't do as didn't enjoy it. I am now having what I want but mindful of calories

BobbyBiscuits · 13/03/2025 15:04

I think you do need both with SW. Some people go a bit crazy with the idea of things like unlimited pasta, potatoes, etc? If they still do that? I remember there being a thing where people on SW were eating ten Muller lights on top of their daily meals because they were 'syn free'.
You need to be aiming for 1500 or sometimes less I think even if you can have free foods and low syns etc. else you probably don't lose much.

Yes I think calories counting gives more freedom and more control and knowledge once you've also lost the weight and are trying to maintain

calorie counting. sw is like a cult

Dayparties · 13/03/2025 15:32

Calorie counting helped me lose just under 40kg, it helped as I could see what was a normal portion size and nothing was off limits, just everything in moderation so it felt a lot easier to stick too.

Yes, I know what you mean

It's really hard once you've got some of their ideas in your head

Calorie counting. Especially using an app that also tracks protein, fat and carbs.

Not only did I loose weight, I learnt a lot about portion control and healthy choices that has helped me to keep it off.

MiddleAgedDread · 13/03/2025 15:49

I've never understood how slimming world works if you're allowed unlimited amounts of certain foods and there's a weird amount of UPF promoted too.

ChorusOfDisapproval · 13/03/2025 15:53

Calorie counting but only with proper food. Try reading Andrew Jenkinson's book Why We Eat (Too Much) which will help explain why diets don't work long term and why calorie counting isn't the answer either.

This. And making sensible choices about the food you use most of your calories on. I use nutracheck and also keep an eye on my fibre and protein, which helps keep me feeling full for longer. Still have treats and wine, but within my allowance for the week.

Collywibbles · 13/03/2025 16:00

Calorie counting 100%. It educates you as to what a normal portion of food should look like too as when you start weighing and calculating you see how easy it is to overeat. If SW worked then they wouldn't have a business model - look at how many people "go back". The word "syns" is also awful - and encourages you to eat low fat, high sweetener, processed food. And remember you can't out exercise a bad diet - exercise is great and important for mental health but you can't do an hour of aerobics and expect to eat loads more. Lift heavy weights rather than hours of cardio - if you can obviously. You do not need to exercise to lose weight but it helps avoid losing muscle mass.

Wantitalltogoaway · 13/03/2025 16:00

Neither. Seriously, don’t bother.

It doesn’t. That’s the whole business model!

But you are meant to eat to your appetite, not gorge once your hunger is satisfied. It just means that you don't have to weigh things out. I agree about the Muller lights though. That's why they now have a syn value. If you follow the diet properly you should find yourself in a natural calorie deficit ( mine is usually about 500).

Yeah, your right of course. I was just saying that some people can lose sight of the fact you do need to keep an eye on the calories. I'm not knocking SW as some friends have really benefitted from it. I notice you can eat quite a lot of food which is great. I hate any diet that restricts vegetables. I'm talking to you, keto! Lol.

Yes it really does promote UPF, i wish a friend never introduced me into it tbh, as i think it's put unhealthy thoughts into my head regarding foods
Syns and guilt etc

Slimming world is toxic stick to calorie counting

ffsgloria · 13/03/2025 16:54

Calorie counting for sure. But with whole foods 90% of the time.

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/03/2025 17:04

having tried both def cal counting

losing weight on sw was very slow

prob as eating lots of pasta and jackets and bloody yogs

counting cals makes you think about what you eat

i have 1200. My tdee is 1700 so to lose weight need to eat 500 less

when I put into mfp what I was eating on sw - no wonder I didn’t lose weight

was around 2750 c a day

🙀🙀🙀

This is the problem. I lost 3 stones on sw. But I don't eat processed food and I only do 60g pasta for me and 30g of rice so keep the calories down that way. If you do it sensibly it's actually very good. When I did it Muller lights were free!!! People are 5 a day and wondered why they didn't lose weight.

LoyalAquaOtter · 13/03/2025 17:27

I have never used slimming world but calorie count(roughly) daily in order to keep my figure. After a while you will just know yourself the calories in things and it becomes easy to work with. I suppose the most important aspect is figuring out how many calories you need to eat to lose/maintain weight. I tend to average my calories over a week rather than be religious over it daily. So if Im going out for dinner on Friday I would eat a little bit less like cutting out a snack the 2 days before or if I'm going for a long run I will eat a little bit more etc

StarCourt · 13/03/2025 17:33

Slimming World works really well for me as I get bored calorie counting. plus going to a weekly meeting makes me more accountable too. I’m 58 and started SW last September and have lost 2.5 stone fairly easily since then with another half a stone to go.
