What his answer then ? I'm happy to get the book as I've got credits to use up

The idea is that it's the quality of the food you eat, rather than just calories.

So in a nutshell, it's avoiding sugar, UPF and eating food that's nutritious, like nuts, seeds, fruit and veg etc. It has a lot to do with hormones like leptin, grehlin and insulin. If these things are balanced then it's much easier to stick to. Sorry I can't explain better, but it's well worth a read. Ditto Tim Spector Food For Life.

SW is firmly rooted in the 1970s and hasn’t moved on with the latest scientific findings about nutrition. I’d avoid it at all costs!

Calorie counting doesn't work for me. I end up starving myself, then binging cos I'm hungry, then feeling guilty...
Yes I have disordered eating so restrictions in that way doesn't work for me.
Slimming world taught me to cook from scratch, eat fruit and veg (I never bother when counting calories, why would I eat an apple when I could have a bag of crisps??)
Slimming World helps me make healthy choices. Calorie counting saw me starve myself all day then binge a whole tub of ice cream just because "I could".
Each to their own though, eh. I lost 2 stone on SW 5 years ago and have kept it off 😊
But most people on here hate Slimming World. And calorie counting will work if you can stick to it! good luck with whatever you choose. Whatever it is needs to be a lifestyle change forever, you can't just "diet" to lose the weight then go back to the way you ate before.
I will eat the Slimming World way forever!

Calorie COunting.

I found the red and green days, syns, healthy extras confusing even though people said it was easy. It's also a commercial partnership where one brand of sausages was ok one day and when they stopped subscribing to SW then suddenly they were off limits. I remember when I ate a simple supermarket 400 cal sandwich, and according to SW I had blown it for the day when that would have been perfectly ok to eat on other plans.

TiredEyes25 · 13/03/2025 18:41

SW is a cult.
No food should be SINFUL (syns) it's about controlling what you eat.

It also has to be a lifestyle change as the moment you stop you'll likely gain weight again.

Ah I have a soft spot for SW. I don't tend to follow their plan too strictly though - keep up the speed etc. For me it's the accountability of group/ weigh ins that work, more than the diet itself

Calorie counting helped me lose just under 40kg, it helped as I could see what was a normal portion size and nothing was off limits, just everything in moderation so it felt a lot easier to stick too.

That is so impressive! well done!

Horses for courses. I lost weight on SW when I was young enough to be able to eat a lot of pasta. Im a volume eater and so things like SW are not good for me

Calorie counting is much more informative and doable for someone like me

However slimming clubs in general are shown to have slightly higher success rates than those going it alone as nother poster has already said, its the checking in and accountability that some people find helpful.

There isnt a weight loss strategy that is 100% successful all the time, its hard work, as animals we are designed to seek out calorie dense food. I got fat eating home cooked wholesome Mediterranean type foods because I simply like my food too much. UPFs didnt come into it much. Its good advice (from all these people that have written books) not to eat calorie dense but nutrition poor foods, but those of us who love our own home cooked foods are going to eat regardless of that. I dont think a lot of the people writing these books understand that.

I’ve never done SW, as I don’t understand it, but calorie counting works for me. It helped me lose 2.5 stone of lockdown weight, a few years ago.

Now, after pregnancy + baby + breastfeeding and eating like a loon, I have the exact same amount of weight to shift. I started calorie counting again (using MFP, which I love) and have lost almost 4kg in three weeks. So, early days, but I’m pretty happy.

I also find that it makes me far more conscious of what I eat. More nutrient dense foods. I get 1400 calories a day and I’m loath to spunk a quarter of that on a KitKat or something.

DietHelp · 13/03/2025 21:05

I prefer SW. I find calorie counting too restrictive and I end up thinking of nothing else. With SW I tend to just plan meals with lean protein, veg, eggs, potato, pasta and rice and eat them to appetite.

I know SW gets a bad rap but no one diet is better for you than another..they all have the same goal.
