Can people go abroad without a passport

Am I right in thinking people can go on holiday abroad without a passport? To certain places. Or did I imagine it 🤔 if I did not then what ID is needed. I don't have a driving licence.

You can go to the Channel Islands without a passport, but airlines are very strict about what counts as photo ID. Not sure about boats though.

I think pretty much every country requires a passport, although there are slightly different rules for the Republic of Ireland.

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 12/03/2025 20:08

You absolutely do need a passport. Apply in plenty of time!

That must have been what I had heard. It makes sense now . Thank you 😊

I think if you're from the EU and have a photo ID card you can travel between those countries using that as ID? I'm not sure though.

GinToBegin · 12/03/2025 20:11

We went to Jersey a few years ago. Didn’t need to take passports, but we did, just for the ease of photo ID. And then forgot to take the bloody things out of the safe in the hotel and travelled home without them.

That's still true. It blew my mind when I saw people doing this! (I'm British living in the EU)

I'm actually eligible for an Irish passport, thank you Dad!

Oh no . Did you manage to get them sent back to you . Or did you have to get new ones 😔.

I don't even have photo ID. So I may as well forget it 🤣. I was hoping to do a 3 or 4 nights away in the may school holiday.

We called the hotel and they very kindly sent them back to us - thank you Grand Jersey hotel. I suspect we were neither the first nor the last to do this.

If you apply for a passport now you might get it in time for May half term. I had to renew my son’s last year and from checking the text updates I had from HM passport office, I applied on the 2nd September and they printed and dispatched the new one on the 14th

ToddlerMumma · 12/03/2025 20:52

If you apply online you should get them back in 2-3 weeks. I don't think they have a backlog at the mo. You've got 10 weeks until May half term

Throughthebluebells · 12/03/2025 21:05

I used to regularly travel without a passport to and from the Channel Islands but unfortunately in recent years the security is now very different so most airlines require a passport.

The flights used to go from the domestic terminals but I think they now depart through international gates in most airports. Although technically not required, good luck arguing that you only need your driving licence with the officials at passport control!

Youagain2025 · 12/03/2025 21:07

I should really do it regardless. I always have theses thoughts and then think I got to sort passports etc etc. Then I don't bother. At least if i have passports they are there so wont to to worry only thing that's a pain is dd is 15 in July so will only get a year ish out of it and then have to get another one for her .

You can fly from England to NI without a passport. I do think photo ID specifically a Drivers License is needed though. I took my passport for the sake of ease but I did see a passenger use their license. I heard it’s easier on the ferry.

You can apply for a provisional driving license and that will be photo ID. My teen got one.

It would probably make sense just to get a passport then we are covered either way .

You don't need a new passport just because you turn 16. It'll just be a "child" passport so valid for 5 years rather than 10

Bailamosse · 12/03/2025 21:12

I got renewal passports for my DC last week - they were with me in 8 days.

First passports may take longer, but you still have plenty of time.

You don't have to get a new passport at 16, if you get a passport at 15 it will last 5 years. If you get it at 16 it will last 10 years.

From the UK you can't travel anywhere outside the UK without a passport..you can go to the channel islands but you still need id for the plane.

Apply now and you should get it back by may half term..I applied for my daughter's first passport last September and it came back within a week .

You can even take the photo on your phone these days

However don't book anything non refundable until you have the passport. Things can go wrong

I won't. I have never been on holiday as an adult. So I'm not confident in doing it . So I definitely wouldn't book until i have passports

I could take myself and the kids on holiday for a grand on 15th of may. But dd is in year 10 so I'm not sure if its to risky.

I'm not worried about taking them out of school as such. As I have never done that before. But I am worried because of the fact dd is in year 10. I'm not sure gcse wise
