Wondering who turned up at my house

LG123 · 11/03/2025 17:04

So I've not been at home for about a week or so, and I'm wondering who on earth could have turned up.

THREE people turned up at once, the neighbour said it was social services, so I called to find out if they have tried to visit us for whatever reason? No, no visits and no open case. And if it was them, three at once sounds pretty serious and the person on the end of the phone would have been able to see whether it had happened or not.

So I'm confused. Who could it be?

Are you absolutely certain nobody in the building would open the door to strangers? Or let them follow them in?

It should theoretically be impossible for anyone to get into my building unless the person they’re visiting knows them & lets them in. It still happens.

Yes true, someone could have let them in?

Is there a reason that social services may turn up?

Just thought those guesses might give me a light bulb moment. Definitely not freodns or family, we've not long moved in and haven't stayed much as we are decorating.

I hope they wouldnt want to cause trouble, I don't even know them!

Suppose I'm just confused and anxious as to why three people would turn up all at once.

The fact you have not long moved in could hold the answer - could it be people thinking the previous owner still lived there and it was for them? Or if new-build flat something to do with checking you are happy with everything etc.
If they were let in by somebody else it could also be that they’ve gone to the wrong flat.

Not that I know of, but you never know.

Can't be the school, she's been all the time!

Somebody buzzed them in and the visitors went to your door by mistake?

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 11/03/2025 18:23

Someone knocked at our door last week. My adult dd was at home but didnt get to the door before they'd gone so we've no idea who it was. Who do you think it was?

Obviously you've no idea. Neither can we possibly know who knocked on your door @LG123. You arent at home - hopefully you are on your hols somewhere nice. Enjoy the time away. Fussing about what may or may not be going on in your absence isnt going to help in any way. If they do want to speak to you - they'll visit you again another time.

They may have buzzed my flat, they way it was explained is that they were at my door which is impossible to get to without knowing the door code.

Council checking to see if you're living there

Feelingstrange2 · 11/03/2025 18:32

Am I the only one here now humming "Hello" from The Book of Mormon.

Then maybe they were looking for the previous residents

ArabellaFishwife · 11/03/2025 18:36

I've been told I look like a social worker. Maybe it was me. Don't worry, I'm not.

ginasevern · 11/03/2025 18:37

Have you got any debt - could be debt collectors. Could it actually be social services? Surely you'd have an inkling if that was likely though? Could be someone looking for the previous resident. Are you in any kind of trouble at all?

Or if council/social housing/housing association: if you often stay away for long periods, maybe the people who check you're sticking to your tenancy agreement, i.e. you are real and not subletting or whatever?

glacancalman · 11/03/2025 18:44

If it's anything important they'll come back. I wouldn't waste any more time thinking about it.

TyrannasaurusJex · 11/03/2025 18:44

Can you please answer why your neighbour thought it was social services?

mindutopia · 11/03/2025 18:47

Did they ask for you by name? If not, I’d assume people looking for previous people who lived there.

That said, I had 3 people not only turn up at my house, but let themselves in, this week. They were looking for the holiday let down the road. 🤷🏻‍♀️

GoldMoon · 11/03/2025 18:48

If your newly moved in , maybe people for your address but previous occupiers ?

DarkMagicStars · 11/03/2025 18:50

I opened the door a few weeks ago to FOUR charity cold callers.

Imbusytodaysorry · 11/03/2025 18:51

@LG123 id say it could be for the old tenant/owner or just buzzed the wrong door/number

DarkMagicStars · 11/03/2025 19:06

My first thoughts were social services or school doing a welfare check but your child has been to school. Where are you all staying?

The council checking you’re settling in OK/Living at the property/seeing who’s living there. Someone might have complained about coming and going with the decorating.

If it was really important they would have posted a note through the door.

Shinyandnew1 · 11/03/2025 19:41

the neighbour said it was social services,

Why did your neighbour say that?

EternalFogInMyNotSoSpoltlessMind · 11/03/2025 19:48

Hi, social worker here. I can barely ever get a 2nd worker to go on dangerous visits with be, let alone two extra workers. Secondly if there is a nosey neighbour situation I never identify myself as a social worker as to not breach anyones confidentiality.

richardosmanstrousers · 11/03/2025 19:52

LG123 · 11/03/2025 17:45

So why would social services now the code?

WingSlutz · 11/03/2025 20:29

Seriously OP, who cares?
Some random people knocked on your door when you weren't there. The End.

Ameliepoulainandthephotobooth · 11/03/2025 20:35

LG123 · 11/03/2025 18:20

Not that I know of, but you never know.

Can't be the school, she's been all the time!

That’s quite a strange response tbh. Are you okay?

mumbleberry · 11/03/2025 20:42

This is such an odd thread

Your neighbour told your mum who told you that three people knocked on your door last week?

That's it?

Why is the assumption that it's social services?
