Over 50 and laying by the pool/on the beach

Having just finished an intense work trip, I find myself in a warm location with a day off. It has not occurred to me in years now to spend it by the beach or the pool, but today called for it. I wondered if this is my age now (so many other things to do) or is it just me?

as a side note, when did swimwear become so expensive….?

I have a holiday planned to do exactly that, lay by the pool with a book and not move for a week. My life is ridiculously busy most of the year, I live for a week with absolutely no responsibilities and nothing to do but suit myself.

Topseyt123 · 11/03/2025 16:42

If that's what you want to do then do it.

I'm 58. I spend a number of days of our annual holiday reading by the pool or on the beach though I do some exploring too when I can be arsed.

That's what holidays are for. Lazing around if you want, and doing what you want, if you want and when you want.

Radiatorvalves · 11/03/2025 16:44

Good for you. I’ve been known to do the same at the end of a work trip. Our holidays are usually not spent lying on the beach… but I’d welcome a bit more of it!

Comedycook · 11/03/2025 16:45

There's nothing I love more than laying by the pool somewhere hot. Loved it when I was younger too. Bliss

Headingtowardsdivorce · 11/03/2025 16:48

I'm not sure that I understand what you're saying, sorry. Are you saying that you think that it's being over 50 that makes you want to sit on a beach?

If so then I don't think so. I've been sitting on beaches all my life, not just now that I'm over 50.

However, I live very near multiple beaches and I love the sea and I love reading, so for me they are the perfect place to sit.

cheezncrackers · 11/03/2025 16:50

I would quite happily spend at least some time each day on holiday lying by the pool reading and now that my kids are older, I can. There were many years when it simply wasn't possible, I remember doing it in my 20s. I think maybe those of us who have kids just get out of the habit of having relaxing holidays?

niadainud · 11/03/2025 17:02

I seem to have stumbled across hensnet.

@niadainud lol

@Headingtowardsdivorce the opposite. Lying by the pool seems out of my head now I’m older

I was thinking similar!

I imagine it's subconsciously because you're more prone to skin cancers.

MissyB1 · 11/03/2025 17:16

I can only lie by the pool of there are no kids around ((preferably adults only hotel). I'm 57 now and I'm very allergic to busy pools with screeching kids.

Lentilweaver · 11/03/2025 17:17

No, it's not your age. I am 53, always hated lying by the pool and continue to hate it. I like active holidays, still do.

It was my first thought too.

Me too.

Many years ago when DH was stressed at work we thought about a 'winter sun' beach holiday... but then realised we'd both enjoy it for about ten minutes. Ended up as a week starting to learn to sail dinghies in Scotland which weirdly enough was much more relaxing because he had no time to think about shitty boss!😂

Moier · 11/03/2025 17:26

I have a villa in The Canaries..I'm 66 and often lie on a beach lounger or by the big communal pool with my kindle.. in my swimming costume .

JanglingJack · 11/03/2025 17:30

What's hensnet?

I'm nearly 50 and I get so bored just laying in the sun, beach or pool. But that's probably my ADHD. I can get bored doing anything for more than half an hour.

But if you feel like relaxing, why not? I found swimwear got more expensive the more bits I needed hoisting up and keeping in place 🤣

I the skin cancer comment was absolutely ridiculous. For a lot of us, our generation you like, the damage was done in the 70s and 80s. No sun cream. You're not more prone to skin cancer because you're over 50.

tsalty · 11/03/2025 17:59

Hour and a half and I’ve had enough

Jellycatspyjamas · 11/03/2025 18:34

So don’t do it, it’s a good thing we all like and need different things.

Ah ok, I see. I suppose my answer still stands though as I still enjoy lying on the beach reading/dozing in my 50s. I love the feel of the sun on my skin.

It's nice to get in and have a swim too.

Ruebolive · 12/03/2025 17:46

Well my idea of bliss is to bugger off for a week every summer to lie by a pool, poodle around eat and drink what I like .

TheMorels · 12/03/2025 18:02

We are in our 50s and do one extra holiday a year that’s just us two. We go to the Caribbean in Feb or March and ‘Fly and Flop’.

Apart from a few scuba diving trips and using the gym daily, we lie on the beach or by one of the pools (in the shade only, the idea of sunbathing is just nuts) all day long and read, swim, drink cocktails, and eat at one of the restaurants. Then we get dressed up in the evening and have a lovely meal

It’s the most relaxing 2 weeks of the year.

Gassylady · 12/03/2025 18:09

Mid 50s here recently back from a first ever winter sun holiday in Feb half term. Had a bloody brilliant time. I told husband and the teen if they didnt want to come I was going on my own. Sat on the balcony and read or played games, sat by the pool and read. Did swim in the sea snd get exfoliated by the volcanic Canarian sand! Laziest holiday I’ve ever had and it was amazing

Gassylady · 12/03/2025 18:10

Use swimwear I already had so can’t comment on pricing 🤣🤣
