Over 50 and laying by the pool/on the beach

Having just finished an intense work trip, I find myself in a warm location with a day off. It has not occurred to me in years now to spend it by the beach or the pool, but today called for it. I wondered if this is my age now (so many other things to do) or is it just me?

as a side note, when did swimwear become so expensive….?

I have just booked a week in Kefaloni in early July. I'm 60 and intend to don sunglasses and bikini and laze by the pool, reading and snoozing. It's been a long year.

I agree swimsuit is ludicrously expensive. Selling tops and bottoms separately is a complete con. I bought a Speedo bikini, sold as one. Much better,

@Jellycatspyjamas this is chat and not AIBU. I didn’t ask for permission

I got a fabulous swimsuit that holds and hoists beautifully from TK Maxx for twenty five quid. The brand is NipTuck, think it's Australian. Also got one nearly as good with a flattering tie at the side of the waist from Primark. Swimwear is improving!

i used to like lying by the pool or sea but now I don’t enjoy it. I also don’t like lie ins. I don’t physically feel comfortable lying down for long periods while awaken

My best friend and I hire a villa with a private pool for a fortnight specifically to sit by or in the pool on a lilo for two weeks doing bugger all. We are both late 50s. For us, it is the perfect holiday.

PrivacyScreen · 12/03/2025 23:44

I enjoy a swim or two, and maybe an hour with a book then I'm very bored.

ItGhoul · 13/03/2025 00:02

I’m 49 and I’ve never really been one for sitting by pool / on a beach for long periods.

If I’ve got a book to read I’m happy to spend a couple of hours relaxing but I’d generally choose to do that in the shade and I don’t really swim. I don’t think I’ve worn swimwear since 2013.

The thought of spending a day lying around a pool never appealed to me. However when we took the kids on holiday a couple of years ago we ended up doing exactly that and it was amazing. Talking early 40s for us.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 13/03/2025 00:21

I love going to the beach and lazing by the pool so much I moved to Australia near the beach, and bought a house with a pool! 😎It is amazing, and I hate it when I close the pool for winter.

ClairDeLaLune · 13/03/2025 00:54

What’s your age got to do with it?

What’s hensnet?

Lentilweaver · 13/03/2025 07:28

Baffling thread. Can't see what age has to do with it either.

TheChosenTwo · 13/03/2025 07:33

It’s really looked down on by some but I enjoy an hour or two sat with my book on a lounger by the sea with my book, in and out for cooling off in the water.
I love the heat, neither Dh nor I would last a whole day doing it because we get itchy feet and need to stretch our legs but we are quite happy for a quiet couple of hours doing exactly this.
It’s a stark contrast from our holidays when dc were small and going to the pool or beach was considerably less relaxing but probably a lot more ‘fun’, I used to look wistfully at anyone who was just lying down absorbing the sun and their books, now I can do it too.

No, it's not your age. I am 53, always hated lying by the pool and continue to hate it. I like active holidays, still do.

But it doesn't have to be all or nothing.

When on holiday, we tend to walk a good few miles each day, and have time for a few hours by the pool or on the beach in the afternoon. We'll have a leisurely breakfast and go for a walk, either around a city or in the hills, have lunch while we're out, then have a least a couple of hours relaxing and/or swimming later in the afternoon.

My best friend and I fly out on Saturday for a week of lying by a pool. There will be drinking, reading and lots of laughter. We do it every year and it’s the holiday I look forward to the most. It really is the best thing ever and a complete reset in our busy lives 😊

tsalty · 13/03/2025 22:54

a very interesting mix of responses. Maybe age has nothing to do with it, I was just wondering if it was that or if it was just being too ‘busy’. I find the term “hensnet’ hilarious. But - as always on Mumsnet - you have have to get the belittlers. Thanks for the responses, it been interesting!
