Can anyone recommend a good single malt whiskey?

Not sure where to post this but can anyone recommend a nice single malt whiskey please?

It's for a special gift, he likes cigars too so preferably one that would complement that. Up to £150. Thank you 🙂

Talisker is nice, but not the Skye version, whicv has a diluted taste.

The Oban distillery make a nice single malt as well.

Lagavullin is Smokey without being too strong.

AsparagusGirl · 10/03/2025 20:39

My favourite is Port Charlotte from the Bruichladdich distillery on Islay. It wouldn't be as much as £150 unless a special edition but it's just the right amount of peatiness.

Really depends on taste tbh.

The easiest drinkers I would say are speyside malts. The island malts are more peaty but that might be his preference.

Macallan is v popular but they tend to sell most to the far east nowadays so it can be harder to come by the nicest ones.

I don't know what your budget is but Glen Fiddich or tamdhu come in a range of price points. Some of the singleton of dufftown are nice.

Are there any shops that specialise in Whiskey near to you, for £150 you’d get a good choice, Dalmore for example

Hairymunter · 10/03/2025 20:43

Glen Goyne 18 year old. Best value for your budget. And it's whisky, no E when it's Scotch 😉

I did see Dalmore when I googled whiskies. It sounds lovely but the reviews were mixed. Never know which reviews to go with 😄

Or Bowmore 18 if he likes a peaty. You'll need to ask as some people really don't like a peat.
Bowmore is my favourite.

Unless you know he likes the smoky character of the island malts I would opt for a Spey side whiskey. There is a really good retailer which I found online

Avatartar · 10/03/2025 20:50

Lots of whisky drinkers are quite particular and either love or hate peaty ones, maybe try and find out what type of taste he likes before you spend a lot

Wintershealing · 10/03/2025 20:51

He likes Glenmorangie so does that indicate peaty or non?

Hairymunter · 10/03/2025 20:52

You'll always get mixed reviews on whisky as everyone has different things they look for. At your budget you're looking at an 18 or 21 year old for maximum flavour.

Tshirt6 · 10/03/2025 20:53

That’s not particularly peaty. £150 is a good budget. I would go into an independent whisky shop for their advice with that amount. Anything in the supermarket will be £45 max and not the best you could get.

Ipadannie · 10/03/2025 20:54

The Harris distillery whisky is amazing. Mind you so is their gin........And the whisky packaging and bottle is beautiful.

DP is suggesting Dalmore cigar malt just under £100 on amazon, it's designed to go with cigars.

Fatloss · 10/03/2025 20:54

You are planning on spending a lot. A good whisky would not necessarily need to be that price. Its such a indidual taste maybe give him a voucher for a special shop so he can pick something himself.

Hairymunter · 10/03/2025 20:55

Glenmorangie is non peaty, it's a highland whisky so light and smooth notes. Hang on and I'll take a look at what's about. If you or someone you know are going through duty free before the birthday there are whiskies only available there so that's an option.

Thank you for all the replies! Lots to look into but I will see if there's a whisky shop. His birthday isn't until mid April so I have time.

Harris whisky is excellent (advised by my DH as I hate whisky). As is Tomatin, lots of special editions as recommended by my brother who also loves whisky! I’d stick to highland or Spey side (or Harris) if he likes Glenmorangie as that is quite a smooth whisky.

monsterfish · 10/03/2025 21:00

Glenmorangie is more of a speyside malt - maybe try a Macallan or Dalwhinnie.

For £150 I would ring a whiskey shop and ask for their recommendations.

Thank you. I tried the glenmorangie and it was really nice. Maybe I'm an up and coming whisky lover 😆

The signet might be above your budget, there's always nectar d'or which I really like but it is rather sweet.

Glenmorangie is not a Speyside whisky, it's a Highland whisky. Tain is further north than Speyside.
