What small thing are you surprisingly on top of.

Rather than focus on all the shit that is drowning me I was thinking about what I was surprisingly on top of.

drum roll…..

Setting all my email preferences so I don’t get marketing emails and my inbox is manageable. I saw my friends inbox and it has 10,000+ unopened emails and I got so stressed!

Share any mundane things that you are completely on top of… cleaning schedule, fixing clothes and shoes etc….

I have my children trained like German Shepherds.

They have fun and independence and lots of time doing their own thing, but when I say that it’s time to go / tidy / whatever else, they do it. I didn’t do this so I could boast about it on MN but because (as it once was) three under four I didn’t want to be the person running through the park screaming after them.

Also very frowned upon to say irl, so here I am!

That sounds magical. As a mum of just one toddler, I would love to learn how to achieve something like this! How old are your children now? Are you a SAHM?

Seven, three and three and no, not a SAHM. I won’t offer advice because someone will come along and shit plop all over it.

I’m very impressed and a bit envious! Do you work and do you have children, and if so how old? (Please say you’re not working and your children are all teenagers so you have a bit of time 😂)

Ha! No I'm mid 60s ...just work p/t. I'm just an organised soul!

I started a process during Covid of decluttering. Nothing whatsoever in the loft. I began it after witnessing DH having to clear his mum's loft after she went into a nursing home. Hideous job.
Since then I've slowly chipped away at cupboards and drawers, regularly repeating the process.
I still have way too many books, but my excuse is that DS regularly ransacks my shelves and appropriates anything he fancies, so I guess he's helping me stay on top of that problem.

Ironing. By not doing any.

lol.me too.
I never think the need for flat clothes justifies the time

Hazey19 · 10/03/2025 18:05

The ironing! The ironing basket is empty. And sort of the washing but that basket will fill up again tonight. Boring but satisfying.

dothehokeycokey · 10/03/2025 18:08

After reading this thread this morning it made me sit and catch up with my business accounts and admin.

It's taken four hours but I'm totally up to date so thank you to whoever posted it.

I'm always on top of washing here as I do a load every week day and then on weekends around three or four a day so if I don't keep on top of it I'm screwed.

skipdiddyskip · 10/03/2025 18:15

Keeping on top of tidying constantly so that I can do a full
clean of the house in about an hour. Because all I need to do in each of the rooms is dust, hoover mop and then move on, no putting things away! Obviously
I'm not talking deep clean here, I mean just the weekly clean. It is satisfying though.

Lentilweaver · 10/03/2025 18:17

Once again I walked 12 k steps and did no house admin or cleaning.
I see a pattern.

user1471538283 · 10/03/2025 18:20

This is so great to focus on what we do rather than the never ending list of what we haven't done! When I've finished renovating this place will be much easier to clean but until then I'm on top of laundry and dishes. And for several years I've emptied the bin before it gets too much and I can barely lift it. Having a smaller bin here helps with that. I have to be really unwell to not do the dishes each evening.

user1471538283 · 10/03/2025 18:23

@faffadoodledo - I hear you! Sorting out my DGM's house took a year (we could only do Saturdays) and whilst I didn't mind I don't want that for mine. I try to declutter as I go along and I've had to with 3 moves in 4 years but there's still so much.

GrandHighPoohbah · 10/03/2025 18:27

I am on top of family birthdays for the next six months. Go me!

Booooooom · 10/03/2025 18:31

Currently school admin, I used to faff, but now send back forms and pay for trips/stuff on the day the request is sent. Also have all school lunches for youngest booked until Easter hols. Rest of my life is an unorganised mess however!!

ThisIsMyYearToFindMyself · 10/03/2025 18:31

Laundry, the bathroom, the fridge, food cupboard.

Laundry - I have an 8kg machine and separate clothes into two temperatures only. When the machine is full, that’s it. I’ve got a good airer, no dryer, plenty of pegs.

Bathroom - it’s always clean as I do it every weekend and as needed in the week. Shower curtain is washed every few weeks, bath mat every week. Always have plenty of soap, shampoo etc.

Fridge - love to empty it out and give it a clean. Everything has its place and it’s all just very…..efficient.

Food cupboard - I have stocks of the basics eg pasta, rice etc. I know where everything is, all the spices are in order, cupboards arranged neatly.

BUT……………………………………

Paperwork? Bills? Fucking hell, what an utter shambles. I have no idea what’s going on, and no idea how to rectify it. I know it’s bad, but don’t have the knowledge of how to even begin. It’s overwhelming. Bags of ‘stuff’ shoved in cupboards.

GameOfJones · 10/03/2025 18:34

Laundry here too. I do a load of laundry every day without fail. Put it on a wash after dinner, hang it out in the morning or put it in the tumble dryer and put it away when I get home. Then put the next lot in the washing machine and it starts all over again. It means it's never a huge job and I never have piles of washing hanging around.

The rest of my life does not run so smoothly!

Dustmylemonlies · 10/03/2025 18:39

I'm think I'm pretty good at short-term financial management. I start saving for Christmas in January. I start shopping for new school uniform in small stages in June. I try and keep a buffer of £1000 in a savings account in case of the unexpected - unplanned car maintenance etc. If I have to dip into it then I don't allow myself any luxury spending (clothes etc) until I've replaced it. I track my monthly spending on my banking app and try and keep within my means. (Admittedly this is a lot harder these days that it was 5 years ago.)

I want to be one of these people who is on top of the housework and has a clutter free house but I really don't have my shit together enough.

This is me! On top of my steps but the house is a mess and my to do list is huge

Dustmylemonlies · 10/03/2025 18:39

Also I'm good at time-keeping. I have a morbid fear of being late for anything.

I should rename this thread “Boring but satisfying”

Packing!

I have a check list for all the family and each time we go away I make minor edits so it’s always up to date and efficient.

I’m so proud of it and I use packing cubes e.g. 1 for pyjamas, 1 for swimwear, 1 for outfits, 1 for kaftans (me), 1 for underwear etc.

With 3 kids under 5, it means I never forget anything! Stress free holidays 🙌

Also birthdays. I have one of those wall hanging things from Etsy with everyone’s birthday on. Fantastic when you have a big family.

What small thing are you surprisingly on top of.

The gym. I finally have a consistent and sustainable gym routine that I do without thinking or moaning or dodging. The bit I like the best is that I have my gym bag packed with next day’s clothes and gym Kit laid out the night before. I feel like a proper grown up.

I love this thread. It’s made me feel better on a shit day. Thank you for starting it @2021x

Me too… I got into a good routine last year and have more or less managed to keep to it and am now starting to see progress!!

On top of things. Sent mum Mother's Day card yesterday. Did Pooh sample. Booked blood test today. Don't have anything on my 'to do list', so that's good.
