Rather than focus on all the shit that is drowning me I was thinking about what I was surprisingly on top of.

drum roll…..

Setting all my email preferences so I don’t get marketing emails and my inbox is manageable. I saw my friends inbox and it has 10,000+ unopened emails and I got so stressed!

Share any mundane things that you are completely on top of… cleaning schedule, fixing clothes and shoes etc….

Shredding old bank statements, house insurance etc, have cleared out the filing cabinet to just hold more recent stuff and can now open it again!

Purplecatshopaholic · 10/03/2025 11:56

This thread highlighted I am not on top of anything! I lurch (in my home life at least) from minor crisis to minor crisis, lol. (At work I am organised - well, I have people to organise me!) Cue crushing disappointment in own failings.. Then Squashyhat saves the day by mentioning ironing, and being on top of it by not doing any. Hurrah! Now that I can lay claim to…

Lentilweaver · 10/03/2025 11:59

I am also on top of cutting down on alcohol by never having any.

I have my children trained like German Shepherds.

They have fun and independence and lots of time doing their own thing, but when I say that it’s time to go / tidy / whatever else, they do it. I didn’t do this so I could boast about it on MN but because (as it once was) three under four I didn’t want to be the person running through the park screaming after them.

Also very frowned upon to say irl, so here I am!

Jeez that's amazing. I salute you.

Waterlilysunset · 10/03/2025 12:00

Laundry most of the time. Two small kids but sahm. Do a load most days or every other day.
often on top of sell my dates in the fridge but not always!

alwaysanticipating · 10/03/2025 12:07

This is a good thread. There's so much I'm not on top of that it's a nice uplift to remember that progress has been made in some areas. I'm a lot more on top of health stuff now. I exercise regularly, eat better, sleep better etc than I used to, which makes me a bit better equipped to cope with the tricky bits of life. I have good close relationships with both my DC and that has taken a lot of effort. I maintain good friendships, which are really important to me.

However, house is a tip, I feel I'm always frantically paddling to keep up with work admin, life admin, kids admin, laundry etc regularly miss deadlines for submitting forms, stuff for tax returns etc. All this talk of cleaning out cabinets and paperwork is very inspiring to me.

I have de-pilled all my wool jumpers this weekend and am proud of myself. I quite enjoy the process

You are a queen. I love this.

JudyP · 10/03/2025 12:30

I am loving this thread as I was not sure I could say I was on top of much but actually I am on top of laundry and work emails ( private emails are a healthy 2912) but work emails get looked through every day and dealt with

HundredMilesAnHour · 10/03/2025 12:31

I filled my car up with petrol yesterday so I’m on top of that. Small wins ;-)

Ridewithme · 10/03/2025 12:33

My kitchen. It is a kitchen/diner with a comfy seating area and is probably used more than the living room. I have nothing in the kitchen that is not functional or not used. Every container has a lid that fits. Every drawer is neat, tidy and is hovered as needed. I binned a lot of plastic containers as we don't need that many and we don't miss not having that many. All the plates match, likewise the cutlery, cups, glasses. We have spares of things we use a lot eg small hand whisk. If one is in the dishwasher then the other one can be used etc. We only have the cooking dishes we need, any more would be clutter. We never run out of food or anything kitchen-related. A shop comes every week without fail. I have labelled tubs for candles, cookie cutters, cake decorating, birthday cake bits. At any point the kitchen is ready to use: everything is tidied away as soon as, the dishwasher goes on during the day and again overnight.

boxtop · 10/03/2025 12:34

Firewood. We always have enough Firewood. And hot sauce. That's about it. I'm about to send an invoice for some freelance work I did in October. Girlboss!!!

Girasoli · 10/03/2025 12:36

I am good at small thoughtful gestures...new babies/house moves/passing big exams and friends will get a nice card in the post or present or homemade cake.

The DC are good travellers. We try and do European travel by coach or train now to reduce our carbon footprint and the DC happily play dobble/read/nap. It's mainly down to them I guess but DH and I are good at packing small toys and snacks!

DysmalRadius · 10/03/2025 12:40

My kids. The house is always in various states of cleanliness/tidiness, I have a million emails, I sometimes run out of things that I feel a grown up should be on top of, and my work situation could be a lot more organised.

But, I home educate my kids and I always find them fun and engaging ways to learn, spend time with them nurturing their interests, and I'm always happy to learn about random cryptids, help them with logic puzzles or whip up a quick diagram to explain something they want to know. Hopefully they notice that more than the crumbs under the sofa... 🤞😂😬

Normallynumb · 10/03/2025 13:05

Cleaning and polishing my shoes and boots.. I love my Ecco Chelsea boots and want the leather to last
Wardrobe organisation. and underwear drawer separators
Rubbish collection. I go around my flat binning everything possible.
I put anything I don't want into a charity bag at the same time
Next haircut booked before I leave
Ditto with my dog groomers
Putting washing away as soon as it's dry.
Drying tops on hangers.
I live in a tiny flat, so organisation is vital

FourChimneys · 10/03/2025 13:26

I love this thread.

I am very not on top of a lot of things but two things I'm good at are:

House plants. I have about 35 but they are all watered, fed, pruned, propagated regularly and are in very good health. They all get their preferred amount of heat and daylight. When I see dried out, uncared for houseplants it makes me sad. I have been known to kidnap them for a better life.

Packing to go away. We go away quite frequently, to family or on short breaks. I have separate underwear, socks, pj's and a couple of tops just for going away. As soon as we return I do the laundry, then repack. I check my washbag and refill or replace as needed. Spare phone charger, hairdryer, notebook etc are fixtures in my bag. It means packing the day before just takes a couple of minutes.

WhiteRosesAndCandles · 10/03/2025 13:40

Love your packing protocol @FourChimneys. I half do this but will be more mindfully organised. I hate packing the day before. This will make me feel so much better.

wemberlee · 10/03/2025 13:58

I go food shopping every single week and stock the house for everything we need for the week ahead. Occasionally we will run out of bread and milk but mostly have a good supply for the week.

Purplecatshopaholic · 10/03/2025 14:03

I love this thread. I now realise in fact I am on top of lots of things. Ironing - by not doing any. My alcohol consumption - by not drinking any. Petrol in the car - by getting some yesterday. Feeling better already.

Lentilweaver · 10/03/2025 14:09

Have put out the recycling and returned my library books. House still a tip but at least on top of those.

PumpkinSparkleFairy · 10/03/2025 14:22

For me it’s money stuff. I use my ISA allowance asap, I keep track of all my accounts and know exactly what my net worth is and how much is going in to my pension etc, I get my tax return done way ahead of the deadline. Weirdly satisfying 😂

I feel super on top of baby sleep and feeding (4mo old) compared to friends, in that I BF on demand, do contact naps, and cosleep. I was primed to expect sleep deprivation but I sleep brilliantly! So many friends are super stressed with tracking apps and white noise and sleep training and lots of guilt/bad sleep. I do try not to annoy people IRL by waxing lyrical about the simplicity of my approach…

Love the PP who said small thoughtful gestures!

For balance, I procrastinated applying for Irish citizenship from the Brexit vote until last year when pregnant with DC, as it then became urgent 😂

ChiaraRimini · 10/03/2025 14:41

It's so much easier to be organised when you don't have small kids anymore. Stuff stays where it is put, and I don't have a constant flood of toys, artwork from school, half eaten snacks, plates, discarded socks and jumpers all over the house.

GreyAreas · 10/03/2025 14:58

I'm working my way back through all my Google photos, making sure the ones I want to keep are in albums and then archiving them, and deleting the 9 out of 10 photos and screenshots I really don't need to keep.

Hedjwitch · 10/03/2025 15:08

I'm on top of my finances and enjoy the feeling of security it gives me after years of debt.
I know how much is in each account and what the interest rate is,and I move money around accordingly to get the best rates. It's only small amounts but it's good to know I'm on it.

I regularly cull emails both personal and work and delete old folders etc. I couldn't imagine having thousands of emails sitting in in trays.

I'm the same with emails. It does stress me out.
I keep deleting them but they keep coming.
I don't have much space that's the problem and I don't want to pay for more.
