Ladies how much do you spend on clothes

How much do you spend on clothes monthly ?
I spend approx £100 a month.
i never buy high price items but rarely shop at low end shops. Mostly High street shops.
I feel like this is indulgent. I’m trying to cut it back as I could be saving the money.
i don’t go into any debt as better off than I’ve ever been. But I guess the money could go on other things.
I used to hardly spend anything and this is my indulgence. I wonder if that plays a part now as I could never afford it.
My only other treats are odd meals out and occasional social events.
Interested to see what you ladies spend and also if not clothes any indulgences ?

£0 most months. Not a follower of fashion and only buy when I need something. I did spend £200 yesterday as I needed a new pair of jeans and a couple of casual spring tops but that will probably be it for several months.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 09/03/2025 19:07

Generally £0. How often do you need new clothes. I did buy some new gym clothes last month but I don’t foresee spending anything this month or next month. I might get a few new bits to go on holiday in the summer but not much as the stuff from last year and the year before is still fine. I may pick up a charity shop bargain if I see one though.

edited to say I actually forgot. I had a refund for Amazon and so I decided to buy some trail running shoes. I think I put an extra £15 towards them. Does that count?

Autumn1990 · 09/03/2025 19:09

I had a no buy year for clothes last year and managed apart from buying socks and bras
This year I need new wellies (£70) ideally 2 yard coats (£100) and a new pair of leather boots (£45). I also need new knickers and vests.
I’ve still got lots of clothes, many brand new so I’m ok for a few years yet. Plus there isn’t much that appeals in the shops atm

Winter coats are expensive. A good wool coat will last years - I like to have two in the mix because I wear them everyday to work and they do need dry cleaned.

then a smart weekend coat and a more casual coat for walking the dog.

i have gone from a size 16/18 to a size 10 so I really do need to replace everything. Pajamas, underwear, gym clothing and a work wardrobe. Then there’s clothes for a night out etc!

it’s an expensive business 😊

I already have high end classic coats in red and black.

I'm looking for an everyday padded coat, so far Asda has been the only one to win on this - I most certainly try on coats and shoes.

I spend around £180/month. Mostly high street brands, a bit of vinted, and more premium brands for some outdoor kit (as I find the quality worth it).

Sure I could cut some discretionary spend. But also I wear out clothes - I could not get away with so little as some others are saying? I go through about three sets of running trainers a year, and one set of walking shoes. That lot are around £90 a pair x 4. Work boots, wellies and walking boots last about 2-3 years. Jeans maybe two years. Work shirts look awful after two years.

I live rurally, work in an office, and my hobbies are quite outdoors/exercise oriented.

lljkk · 09/03/2025 19:20

I paid US $7 for some 2nd hand shorts in February, after one pair split in seat & I was visiting a hot place.
I want to get rid of possessions, try not to spend anything.

SpottedDonkey · 09/03/2025 19:24

Clothes are not a big priority for me. I have zero interest in fashion, I hate shopping, I WFH and I rarely go to events which require me to dress up so I just don’t need to buy clothes frequently.

I suppose I spend around £300-£400 a year, including shoes but I’m not keeping count. Even if this is a slight underestimate, it’s still a negligible amount of money in the context of my finances.

whatswrongwivme · 09/03/2025 19:25

About once a year I spend about £200. I am trying hard not to buy anything new as I have loads of clothes.

livelovelough24 · 09/03/2025 19:26

I do not have budget, but I buy most of my clothes second hand so it is not that much. I spend a lot of money on footwear though. Definitely more then I should. 😫

henlake7 · 09/03/2025 19:26

I probably spend between £100-200 a month at the moment. I've gone down 6 dress sizes the last couple of years so had a genuine need to replace everything.
But honestly I still haven't got over the excitement of clothes shopping again (just slipping on a size 10 and feeling good about myself?priceless!).
I tend to shop a lot on Vinted, Primark and sales though, I'm not an expensive brand person.

DoYouReally · 09/03/2025 19:43

Backs out of thread after realising I may have a shopping problem despite thinking my spending is fairly normal.

In my defence I have a large bust, small back size so have to spend a lot on good underwear and am short so flattering clothes aren't always easy to find.

However, during lockdown I bought a sewing machine and learnt how to take up sleeves and trousers.

Nothanksiwillwalk · 09/03/2025 19:48

I hardly ever bought clothes but then I lost weight from size 16-18 and now I'm a size 10.

Clothes are a huge pleasure now, I did have to replace my whole wardrobe. I tend not to buy brands although have got a few lovely items from charity shops (how amazing are they!) and vinted (not so keen as prefer to try clothes on). We have a a good selection of charity shops in my affluent area that have lots of high branded clothes.

I have bought a few items from shein too and I know it's really not great. A few pairs of tailored trousers and fitted knits for work that were good and will last a good while.

I'm currently spending about 30 per month. But that's loads from charity shop!

I am the same. Bras are expensive. Trousers and jackets have to be petite and well tailored.

Coats need to be from brands that do petite.

Marks and Spencer’s has saved me - I hate, hate, hate next (not sure why - I think it’s because I grew up in a town with limited choice and everyone wore next clothes so we all matched!).

GiddyRobin · 09/03/2025 19:59

It really depends! February I probably spent about £300. I bought 3 nice spring dresses, some sale items, and other things from charity shops and Vinted.

January I didn't buy any clothes, I had loads of new stuff gifted at Christmas.

December I spent about £250 because I saw some gorgeous stuff for Christmas parties.

This month I've bought some new leggings, some patterned tights, and if I come across anything on Vinted or in charity shops I'll probably buy it. I've also bought a few pieces of jewellery each month, too.

Pebbles16 · 09/03/2025 20:03

I have two very high quality coats. One is 20 years old (and, to be fair, getting a bit scruffy), the other is 12 years old and looks great because I take care of it.
I have ye olde capsule wardrobe for work and about 20 tops so I am not wearing the same things every day. Also layers and accessories are my friends.
I spent about £50 last year because I needed shorts and socks. I will probably need a couple of new bras this year (massive boobs, not so massive back) so that's about £60-80.
TBH, I could probably (barring massive weight gain/loss) never HAVE to buy clothes again. I might want to though.

Twattergy · 09/03/2025 20:05

I just checked my vinted account and I've spent about £600 since last July. £185 of this was on a Burberry mac and the rest includes items between £10 and £35. I was updating my wardrobe a lot. I've spent v little outside of vinted apart from a couple pairs of cheap jeans.

Ironically when I was younger, waaaaaaay too much. Now I'm much better off, and I barely buy clothes. Last time I got a pair of jeans a week ago but before that was 2 years prior, because my second pair of jeans ripped.
I still have my designer from youth, some things I couldn't part with, but I live in jeans and t shirts living my happiest life! I spend way more on kitchen gadgets and food though 😂

I also buy less than I used to but I think that's because I've finally figured out what works for me and what doesn't, so no longer make 'mistake' purchases.

Purplecatshopaholic · 09/03/2025 20:26

Oh gosh, I’m also quite surprised at the low spends on here. I do spend quite a bit I guess, but often in the sales, and always pieces that will last and are classic. I love shoes, and I’m senior at work and need to be quite corporate. I mix it up though, ie some more expensive pieces with high street.

LastTwoBraincellsFightingFor3rdPlace · 09/03/2025 20:27

I haven’t bought actual clothes for a year and a half.

However, I’ve replaced all of my underwear and I need to replaced my pjs as they’ve all got holes in, embarrassingly…

EwwSprouts · 09/03/2025 20:33

I probably average £60 per month. This weekend I bought a French Connection dress £65 for DS's graduation in the sale at the outlet. Last month I bought a sports bra £30. In January I bought a merino jumper, again in a sale £30. I work but tend to wear jeans due to the environment and lack of heating!

Ohhh, you're so lucky!
I just don't care enough 😂 jeans and t shirt, just try to make sure it's sustainable etc. I have upgraded to one colour and jeans dark and light. Also same shoes until holes in them.

LillyPJ · 09/03/2025 20:57

Often nothing at all! Maybe £10 in charity shops some months. New shoes or walking boots when needed (but I'd spend £70- £140 on these). A few quid on M&S knickers/bras when needed. I wear my clothes until they wear out. I actually don't like new clothes and if I buy something new, I'll leave it in the wardrobe for weeks or months before I wear it.

Hihihello193 · 09/03/2025 21:16

Almost nothing. Maybe £10 a month? If it's socks or some replacement jeans, or a 2nd hand top. I still wear a shirt that I bought in a charity shop when I was 15. I'm 40 now! If I get paint on my joggies I might find the same ones on vinted. But if I rip a hole in something it gets a nice patch. I wear good labels that seem to last well. And weird vintage stuff that I have kept for years. That said, I never buy into new trends. I think fashion and style are 2 different things and luckily for my bank balance I've no desire to be fashionable haha! My style might not be for everyone but I dont think I've the energy to worry about that 😬😄

Doitrightnow · 09/03/2025 21:18

For years I'd have said basically nothing.

In the last year I've been selling stuff on Vinted that no longer fits or I don't need, and replacing it with higher quality stuff (cashmere, linen etc), also purchased on Vinted. I only use money I've accrued from selling stuff so although I'm spending quite a lot more than before (maybe £50/mo) it doesn't feel like it.

I've never really cared much about clothes though so I don't see spending nothing on clothes as a virtue. It's not something I make any effort to achieve. Like a pp I don't follow fashion and still have stuff from when I was a teenager that I wear in my 40s.

I spend loads of money on holidays and the theatre though.

hurlyburlywhirly · 09/03/2025 21:23

Honestly. About £250-300 per month.

I mainly buy from places like hush, cos, & other stories etc so that's 2 or 3 items per month.

I give a lot to charity and try to have a one in, two out policy
