Ladies how much do you spend on clothes

How much do you spend on clothes monthly ?
I spend approx £100 a month.
i never buy high price items but rarely shop at low end shops. Mostly High street shops.
I feel like this is indulgent. I’m trying to cut it back as I could be saving the money.
i don’t go into any debt as better off than I’ve ever been. But I guess the money could go on other things.
I used to hardly spend anything and this is my indulgence. I wonder if that plays a part now as I could never afford it.
My only other treats are odd meals out and occasional social events.
Interested to see what you ladies spend and also if not clothes any indulgences ?

I think people grossly underestimate their spending.

Yes I think this too. It's usually recommended that you spend around 5% of your take home pay on clothes, so for someone on 2k a month (below average salary) that would be £100 per month for clothes.

I really don't believe that there are loads of people only spending a couple of hundred a year.

I'm sorry ... "it's usually recommended..." ??? By whom? M&S? Cos? House of Bruar?

schoolfeeslave · 09/03/2025 18:30

I am genuinely shocked at some of the low spends! Kudos to you but don't you just get bored of the same clothes? or do you have loads in your wardrobe from a time when you did spend more?

I probably spend £100 - £150 a month and don't feel I am that frivolous, it's probably one item per month (I try to buy B Corp/ more sustainable brands so not cheap). I operate a one in one out policy and generally get rid of a cheaper item of clothing from when I had a serious Zara habit.

I have tried Vinted but it is so hit and miss, my opinion of what is considered "very good" seems to be very different to a lot of sellers.

Ragwort · 09/03/2025 18:33

It also depends on your lifestyle and age surely .... I'm retired (not that I ever needed to look smart for my job) and have loads of clothes ... many over 30 years old ... it doesn't bother me that they don't look up to date. I easily have 50+ jumpers/tops for example. I also fluctuate in weight so have all sizes from 12-20!!

Last year I did the 'no spend' challenge on clothing ... but this year I have spent £40 on a dress.

I've never spent loads on clothes, I just never throw things away unless they're beyond repair or I'll never fit in them again. I still have shoes I've owned since I was a student, same for jumpers, jeans and dresses. They still fit so I still wear them. Clothes are just a comfort/practical thing for me, I'm not interested in following trends.

@insomniaclife

LOL. I don't know but I've seen that figure quoted a lot over the years.

A quick google takes me here (although these women are clearly spending a lot more than the recommended 5%!)

The last time I bought clothes from a shop was in Tesco in Northern Ireland. Late March 2024. I had travelled over from England, where I live to take care of her. She died in April 2024.

I do need new knickers though, so have bought some new ones from Asda.

Ragwort · 09/03/2025 18:35

school .. I do have loads of clothes including a walk in wardrobe to myself but tend to live in joggers and my DS's discarded Uni hoodies 😆

Lostmosy · 09/03/2025 18:36

Couple of hundred a year if that, I look like shit though do wouldn’t recommend it, badly fitted bras and very old hoodies and jeans. Just what I can afford atm

NovemberMorn · 09/03/2025 18:37

If I see something I like I will buy it, I can go a year or more without buying anything, then have a little shopping spree, usually for summer clothes.
I still wear quality clothes I bought 20 or 30 years ago, odd how fashions don't really change.

SweatOverdose · 09/03/2025 18:38

Same as @biscuitsandbooks I generally
only buy clothes as a replacement for things which are falling apart. I have no idea where to start, no idea what goes together style- or colour- wise so it's easier not to buy anything. Probably 2-300 a year on average, including shoes.

Titasaducksarse · 09/03/2025 18:38

I can veer between zero then a couple of hundred quid in one go, particularly if it's footwear or a coat

Historyofwolves · 09/03/2025 18:39

Probably averages out at about £200 per month. More in winter because I love a fancy coat. Less in summer because I hate summer so just stock up on a few dresses if required and think no more about it. Big fan of a simple black summer dress plus sandals - easy and chic. High end high street and Vinted for me. I also get rid of stuff regularly so this doesn't count what I recoup on Vinted.

Once every 2-3 years will probably buy a handbag but designer handbags feel very passé now so perhaps that will dwindle.....

Probably add another £50-£100 per month for skincare, toiletries and cosmetics.

StMarie4me · 09/03/2025 18:41

I loathe clothes shopping but I do like clothes. I'm a jeans and T shirt weekender, but like to dress up occasionally. Most of my clothes are second hand, as I prefer it. I spend about £100/ year.

placemats · 09/03/2025 18:42

I intend to spend a lot of money soon on footwear and a new coat. Maybe some new tops and trousers. Over £500 estimate but it won't be until Autumn.

Yes - isn't the adage we wear only 20% of our wardrobes? 😀

I love planning what I am going to wear and very deliberately try to wear everything in my wardrobe over a season (I store summer things in winter and vice versa).

OhHellolittleone · 09/03/2025 18:45

Gosh I thought I was a lower spender… mine varies from £50-£400/£500 depending on the month. Probs averages out at £250-300. This includes underwear/shoes/ coats etc. I spend about £40!per month in beach child too. Again it varies as to whether they need shoes.

littleteapot86 · 09/03/2025 18:47

Up until this year probably £100 a month (averaged out as some months nothing, then some months a significant spend) however this year I'm likely averaging £300 per month partly because I really needed new clothes but also because I finally have some money to treat myself. I usually buy at the higher end of the high street (Sezane, reformation etc) so it's easy fine done. 🫠

littleteapot86 · 09/03/2025 18:47

I meant "easily done".

littleteapot86 · 09/03/2025 18:48

I will also add I actually don't own that many clothes. Definitely wear more like 90% of my wardrobe and get stuff repaired etc.

Laboheme78 · 09/03/2025 18:07

I think it’s all relative - your disposal income and your priorities. I absolutely love clothes and spend a lot on them but I have a very good salary and I really look after things. I sell things through Vestiaire or a local dress agency if I no longer wear them (or sometimes pass on to my teenage daughter) but mostly I do buy classic or high ticket items. No fast fashion. On average I reckon I spend £400 a month but I am very picky. Also I have a milestone birthday this year so I am in the process of upgrading certain things that I have always wanted. Although I did go through a phase of trying not to buy and to have a capsule wardrobe I just decided that for me it’s a passion which brings me great pleasure. I also greatly admire stylish older women and hope to emulate them well into my twilight years!

Oh please tell me some of your favourite brands! X

Scutterbug · 09/03/2025 18:55

About £200 a year I reckon at the most.

BottomlessBrunch · 09/03/2025 18:58

I actually tracked it last year;

Cream hoody (Jan) - 17 (sale in Zara)
Green leggings (feb) - 9 (Amazon)
Green bomber jacket - 35 (Stradivarius)
Swirly dress (April) - 16 (primark)
Red swirly dress (May) - 40 AX Paris ( wedding guest )
Tan and black vest top (June) - M&S
Trail trainers (July) - 38 eBay
Grey dress (August) - 16 M&S
Jeans ( Sept) - river island 29
Grey hoodie (sept) - 8 (primark)
High heels (Oct) - 5 Vinted
Burgundy satin skirt (dec) 12 H&M

220 in total for clothes and shoes & about £25 on multipack knickers and Trainer socks

I was also bought several items of clothing from H&M, a pair of Birkenstocks and some new balance trainers as presents - I tend to ask for clothes for birthday/Christmas as then I don't feel guilty buying them.

I absolutely love clothes and clothes shopping and find it hard to curb my hobby but I'm poor so needs must! Im good though at buying some key pieces and switching all round to make different outfits as I like variety.

If I won the lottery I'd be dangerous quite frankly.

Winter coats are expensive. A good wool coat will last years - I like to have two in the mix because I wear them everyday to work and they do need dry cleaned.

then a smart weekend coat and a more casual coat for walking the dog.

i have gone from a size 16/18 to a size 10 so I really do need to replace everything. Pajamas, underwear, gym clothing and a work wardrobe. Then there’s clothes for a night out etc!

it’s an expensive business 😊

I do not understand how this is possible. So far this year I have spent more than that on a pair of trainers, a swimming costume and two bras. Are you really including all underwear, footwear, coats etc or do you just mean tops and trousers?

I spend over half that. I have one pair of trainers and one pair of wellies, both of which I’ve been wearing for about 4 years. Trainers are on way out so I’ll have to find a pair for £20 on vinted to replace.

My last bra I got lucky and found my size in a charity shop, new with tags for £3.
