News stories that stay with you and upset you

I've been reading the updates around the deaths of Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy tonight, and my God it's horrible. A comment I saw on Reddit described it as "Stephen King level of horrifying" and it really is, I can't stop thinking about it. Such a great actor, gets to a grand age of 95 and then... Alzheimer's takes his mind and he ends up living in the house with his wife's body for a week? and unable to feed/save their dog too? Unimaginable.

I've also been reading the court reports from the Kyle Clifford trial, the evil feral thing who murdered John Hunt's wife and daughters. That is evil beyond all belief.

These stories have rooted in my brain and I can't seem to distract myself. Has this happened to you, with news events? How do you cope with it?

The teen who was ra9ed by a male "friend", then by her brother who subsequently murdered her and left her body in woodland. Then a 40 something male passerby found her bloodied half naked body and raped it again instead of alerting the police.

Shows me all I need to know about a lot men and I will never forget it.

🥺

I've worked in a slaughter house, and cannot get past the horrific torture they suffer as they are gassed or plunged into boiling hot electrified water.
Now days I just can't cope with anyone taking the piss out of vegans. Defending animas should be the very last part of the process that offends you, believe me.

Madeleine McCann.

Yes. The whole thing including her parents being accused. All the negative publicity. And although they have a suspect now there is still no definitive answer to what happened and where Madeleine is now.

One story I can't bear to think about is that little boy whose father died when they were alone in the house and no-one knew, with the results you'd expect, it upsets me too much to even type it.

This one really affected me also.

Mumofyellows · 08/03/2025 17:38

Sarah Everad. How she must have felt on that car journey as she realised she was not safe.
I can't even imagine what she went though and her poor loved one having to live with that. Awful.

So so many more awful stories of terrible things too but this one really plays on my mind.

Cesarina · 08/03/2025 17:40

I've literally only just read on the BBC news website about the double-murderer on Death Row being executed by firing squad in South Carolina yesterday, by 3 state correction department volunteers, whose identities are protected. There was a credible view that he had actually been rehabilitated.
He chose the firing squad because of mistrust of the lethal injection option.
I am personally against the death penalty, and am not going to engage here with people who support it as it would derail the thread.
But the article gives very graphic detail about the whole process, (which you are warned about), which I found disturbing and now can't get it out of my head.

Anything involving the murder or mistreatment of children. Star Hobson will never leave my mind. It also stays with me when I read or hear about animals being mistreated or killed. I remember seeing a picture of a dog that had been hanged. It was a picture on the front page of a newspaper many, many years ago.

WonkyDonkeyWonkeyDonkey · 08/03/2025 17:45

Daniel Pelka who was starved and beaten to death by his parents when he was four and who ate food from the bin at school as well as play doh. And who had bruises and marks all over him and who nobody noticed.

Mrsbloggz · 08/03/2025 17:49

Ian Price.

RabbitsRock · 08/03/2025 17:49

James Bulger 😢
I can’t remember her name but the 7 year old girl who had her throat cut by her stepsister 😢

WhenICalledYouLastNightFromTesco · 08/03/2025 17:50

Sebastian Kalinowski. I sobbed when I read and heard about that poor boy's life and death.

The man who went to the parents house of his ex girlfriend and caved their skulls in with a bat in front of his ex girlfriend and then kidnapped her and drover her away with the intention of raping her and then killing her?

user2848502016 · 08/03/2025 17:52

I remember a story about a baby who was left in a pram outside a shop being stolen - it would have been late 80s and my brother was about the same age as the baby so I used to think about him being stolen a lot, even had bad dreams about it

Papadonut · 08/03/2025 17:57

The murder of the Petit family in 2007 seared into my brain. The poor, poor dad who survived. I don't know how I'd want to get on with life if I were him.

Why are these killers and rapists allowed to change their name let alone gender?!

TheaBrandt1 · 08/03/2025 09:06

With all the horror going on in the world seems odd to be most affected by the death of an extremely elderly and wealthy man?

What the hell does his wealth have to do with it? What a sick mind you must have

EdithStourton · 08/03/2025 18:05

When my eldest was a baby the war in Bosnia was in full swing. I watched a news report at about the time of the Srebrenica massacre, and there was a brief bit of film showing refugee women in a field. It was high summer and one laid her baby tenderly down in the only shade she could find, which was that provided by her own body.

I had to leave the room, or burst into tears in front of my in-laws.

There are plenty more, but that is one of the longest-lasting.

The other one that's lasted years was Rose and Fred West. I was working not far away when their property was being excavated. Years later I read an article by Martin Amis; his cousin Lucy Partington had been one of their victims. For some reason I've never forgotten her name.

Suspect October 7th will be one I look back on with horror if I'm still around in 30 years.

Exaxtly. HE was and is an evil no mark who should have been executed. The poor mom worrying about her daughters and the big sis being helpless while her sister was being raped. Both should have been executed.

The Bibas children- the lack of world wide outrage hurt me to my core and makes me terrified for where humanity is going.

I agree.

CoffeeFluff · 08/03/2025 18:09

I have to say, I clicked on this because I’m someone who really suffers reading horrible news, and I wanted to chat to the OP about coping. However, all the responses are people adding horrific news I didn’t know about before! Jesus. The OP asked how you cope, not to give her a condensed summary of the worst things that have ever happened. Anyway, had to stop reading after about 4 replies.

My answer OP is that I do not read the news, watch the news, got rid of Instagram and got rid of LinkedIn (where a lot of sad stories are posted).

Goofbawl · 08/03/2025 18:09

Sophie Hook. I made the mistake of reading the details one night before bed and I couldn’t sleep. The evidence that pieced together her last moments and what she went through was so disturbing. I wish I’d never read it.
Jamie Bulger for the same reasons.

Wendolino · 08/03/2025 18:10

James Bulger stays in my mind the most. His death was shocking and horrific. His mum is so dignified and so determined to get justice for her son.

The victims of Peter Sutcliffe, all of them just ordinary women, no matter why they were out on the street.

Ihateboris · 08/03/2025 18:15

The torture and murder of 10 year old Sarah Sharif. Absolutely breaks my heart to think of the years of torture she endured

Andsoitbeganagain · 08/03/2025 18:15

Baby Peter. Murdered the day before my son was born. That photo of his beautiful little face staring up into the camera will haunt me forever. Should be a teenager now, living his best life. 😥

ThighsYouCantControl · 08/03/2025 18:17

What happened to Gene Hackman and his wife is genuinely sad. Yes, he was a rich elderly man who lived a full, long life. But the way he and his wife (and the dog) died is tragic because he was alone in the house with his wife’s body, confused and uncared for. I wouldn’t want that end for anyone, regardless of their age or wealth.

None of the above takes away from any of the other tragedies mentioned on this thread.
