Lighthearted ... Disagreement re washing up by hand ...

Lighthearted disagreement ...

Our dishwasher has just packed up!

We are currently washing up by hand (not an issue).

My DP and I disagree about drying up, so out of interest would like opinions.

Do the majority of people wash up and then leave it all on the side to air dry or do you dry up with a tea towel?

One of us wants the washing up put away immediately and the other thinks it's a waste of time to dry up!

Realistically, it's no big deal! There's so many more important things to worry about!

Hairdryer as more hygienic

That was supposed to be airdry!

PsychoHotSauce · 07/03/2025 15:56

In Food Tech we were taught that air drying was better.

In adulthood my reality is it stays there until I need to use it (luckily I live alone and annoy no one but myself) Grin

Fagli · 07/03/2025 15:58

Air dry apart from glasses and baking tins. Have previously learnt my lesson from rusted baking tins!

Always just leave on side to air dry as I think it's more hygienic. Towels for drying are more likely to have germs.

offmynut · 07/03/2025 16:05

I wash dry and pack away job done.
Plus ive never owned a dishwasher.

mickandrorty · 07/03/2025 14:54

one of us will wash the other will dry, the tea towel goes in the washing machine, get a fresh one out ready for the morning, job done!

Bit of a faff washing your tea towel every night? Is it washed alone?

TeenToTwenties · 07/03/2025 16:10

Air dry unless there is too much, in which case dry the saucepans to make space.

nodishwasher · 07/03/2025 16:15

@Terrribletwos

I wash tea towels every day anyway as I just throw them in with anything else that is being washed.

What an exciting life I lead 🤣

I change it 2 or 3 times a day. No it doesn't go through on its own it sits in there until the morning when I put the first load of the day on.

Ideally my preference would be air drying (less effort and more hygenic). BUT that only works if you only have a small amount of washing up and don't need to use the sink near the draining board for other things before the washing up is dry.

Airdrying does not work if you are washing up after a big family meal and end up with precariously balance mountains of dishes (or wet dishes on other surfaces) and/or if people are going to be using the kitchen sink for other things and splashing the clean dishes with water (or worse).

Yes exactly this.
And also only if it actually gets put away at some point. Once the next batch is due to get washed, the first lot should already be away, otherwise you end up with new wet stuff making the dry stuff drippy again.

This is such an strange question, as if anyone would do a wash just for one tea towel. Don't most people own more than one?

You do mean air drying.
Because if you use a hair-dryer i will say your mad.

offmynut · 07/03/2025 16:31

Going to say it what planet are some of you from.

BeaAndBen · 07/03/2025 16:34

Air dry, obviously - why make extra work?

whoami24601 · 07/03/2025 16:46

Why don't you do what my bonkers sister does and use the broken dishwasher as a drying rack? That way the pots are airdrying but tidy and out of the way. The reason I call her bonkers is because her dishwasher works perfectly fine, she just prefers this madness method!

Won't it get damp and smelly if the water doesn't drain away?

We were waiting for a replacement dishwasher last week and we used a tea towel. Takes very little time and with one washing and one wiping everything done and put away quickly. I don't see the point in letting it dry and then having to come back again and put it away.

Musicalmistress · 07/03/2025 17:45

We have the same disagreement in our house - I'm firmly in the air dry camp and OH prefers to dry and put away (with a shed load of kitchen roll mind you, not a tea towel!)

CrushingOnRubies · 07/03/2025 17:51

Air dry unless camping and you're using communal facilities

ThejoyofNC · 07/03/2025 17:54

I would never air dry, I can't stand water marks.

I dry up but I don't use a tea towel, I use a microfibre cloth that you can wring out.

reluctantbrit · 07/03/2025 17:55

Air dry here but I hate it as it makes the small workspace even smaller.

So if DH washes up during the day I often dry up with a tea towel so I can actually cook the next meal (I cook, he does the washing up).

If he cleans up after dinner I don‘t care.

user2848502016 · 07/03/2025 17:55

We usually leave to air dry, but have a dishwasher so only hand wash a few things at a time

BoredZelda · 07/03/2025 19:16

Air drying - with the caveat that the non washing person will put them away as soon as they are dry and not leave them piled there until someone else ends up doing it because nobody will.

BoredZelda · 07/03/2025 19:18

If he cleans up after dinner I don‘t care.

Except he's only done half the job, and you have to finish it before you can cook next day.

ItsFridayIminLoveJS · 07/03/2025 19:20

Rinse of any washing liquid and leave to airdry.
