Does anyone absolutely love their job?

I see a lot of posts about people hating their jobs . I was always one of them . I was a teacher , I always hated it. Sundays were the day before work so I couldn’t enjoy them. Half terms were countdowns to work.

I left with nothing to go to . I came across a job and applied , wondering if I was jumping out of the fire pan into the fire . But I didn’t! It’s still teaching , but a different type. No ofsted, no micromanaging , full autonomy. I absolutely bloody love it. Every day , I enjoy every second , I close my laptop at the end of the day and it is never opened at home. I have plenty of time for planning , I never feel overwhelmed, I get recognised for everything I do , I get told what I’ve done well not what I’ve done wrong.

If you love your job , what do you do ?

I left teaching to become a gardener and don't regret it for a second. There are downsides - I'm never going to be rich from it and the Winters can be hard but I enjoy it. I love being in nature and physically active, I love being my own boss, making a difference to people and feeling genuinely appreciated.

I left teaching (English teacher at huge High School) after nearly 20 years. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the kids, I just got ground down by SLT, endless meetings and red tape. Working as many hours doing paperwork and jumping through impossible hoops as contact time. Very close to burn out, so I quit. Now I’m a dog walker, and absolutely loving it. Fresh air, gorgeous doggies and grateful owners…living the dream.

This is exactly why I left my job , I was a teacher and I loved the teaching side but the rest made me ill. Now I get to do the teaching , without the other crap! I get a full day for planning but can also be doing that whenever I want too and all my admin !

Oooh OP can you tell me more about this job? I've been working in adult Ed locally with adults with disabilities but it's zero hours and no planning time. I'd love for a stable job with planning time!

Mental health nurse and I love it. I’ve only been doing it for a year, I retrained as a mature student, and this is the first job I’ve loved having.

@Bookaholic73 how old are you if you don't mind me asking?

How did you manage financially whilst studying?

Gliblet · 07/03/2025 21:05

I work in learning and organisational development and I love it. I spend most of my days coaching, training, designing materials to help people do what they do just that bit better (so for example helping subject matter experts improve their people management skills, or teaching front of house staff a bit of psychology-based stuff to help them deal with tricky customers), I get to work at individual, small team, large team level, but I also get to work at strategic level influencing how the organisation treats its people and what it asks of them.

GoldfinchesInTheTree · 07/03/2025 21:13

Giblet how did you get into that. I'm an ex teacher and work with adults now and have a psychology degree...

EssexCat · 07/03/2025 21:18

I’m not sure I’d say love but it do really like it. I work in administration at a school and although some people can be a bit tricky in the whole I'm very happy when I’m at work.

Mental Health Nurse. I'm not sure I love it, but it's one of my biggest passions in life and I care about the people I meet deeply. The admin drives me up the wall though!

A very hard but impactful role

I am an IT consultant working in fintech (female). I love it, long hours, good psy, always interesting.

NorthernSpirit · 07/03/2025 21:22

I develop new food & drink products for the food industry.

I develop an idea and take it through to sitting on the supermarket shelf.

Bloody love what I do and feel so proud when I see my ideas sitting in peoples supermarket shopping trolleys.

DGPP · 07/03/2025 21:22

Writer, every day feels like a privilege

JoyousPinkPeer · 07/03/2025 21:25

I've been retired for 6 years, loved my job as our team of three were amazing, the organisation was super people focussed and was great in terms of giving back to society. Leadership were great but tried (unsuccessfully) to financially shaft me shortly before I was due to leave.

Ilovegoldies · 07/03/2025 21:26

Environmental Health Officer..love my job, it's very stressful sometimes. Every day is different though.

FudgeSundae · 07/03/2025 21:28

I work in finance and I love it! I help businesses make good financial decisions and it’s hugely rewarding.

Sal17690 · 07/03/2025 21:32

I love my job. I am non teaching staff in a secondary school

Mumoftwinsandasingleton · 07/03/2025 21:35

Also ex teacher here. I love what I do now. It's only 2 days a week and short days but it's a very specialised and amazing job. I also run my own online business daily which I really love too!

There are loads of routes in depending what industry and area you want to start in - teaching qualifications and a background in psychology are an excellent starting place. Take a look on LinkedIn for jobs like L&D Business Partner or L&OD Manager and look through the essential and desirable qualifications. You'll most often see things like experience of designing and delivering training/learning interventions, coaching skills, management skills, presentation skills, communication skills. Then depending on industry/area they might look for specifics like the ability to deliver compliance training or work in leadership development, or do what I do a lot of and work alongside people who are amazing at their specialist subject but probably never developed skills like people management, project management, conflict resolution or inclusive practice (because they didn't have to, they were focused on their specialty!).

If you wanted to look at a qualification something like a CIPD Level 5 or 7 L&D consultant/business partner would be about the right level but relatively few places would ask for this. Happy for you to PM with questions as you go along if it helps 😀

I loved my job. I was an Airline pilot (retired now).
It was very stressful a lot of the time, but when we got airborne and into the cruise it was fab. Flying up into the sunshine!
I didn’t like getting up really early, but you have to have a certain mindset and just get on with it.
Every day was different - the destinations, the people, the weather, etc.
There was a lot if studying and testing, although that in itself was a good challenge…
It’s just a very different way of life. Well paid, however!

Calmestofallthechickens · 07/03/2025 21:50

Love my job - vet in a small animal practice. I love the variety, the mental challenge, the animals, (some of) the people, learning new things every day, managing to combine massive science nerd and crazy cat lady…

It’s by no means free of its fair share of crap bits (mostly dealing with the humans, and the narrative that I actually enjoy butchering puppies to finance my private yacht, or whatever) but I can put up with that because overall there is nothing I’d rather be doing.

DollyWotsit1981 · 07/03/2025 21:51

Complex care worker to two wonderful young people. I absolutely love being part of their lives and get to have ALOT of fun most of the time 🥰

Well paid outside of the UK!! DH was a pilot and like most ended up working in the Middle East for quite a long time as it doubled his salary. Back home in the UK he earned similar to me as an AHP which I always found shocking
