I have an ex-sister in law and two current sister in laws all called Karen. What are the odds of this?
This not to mention my boss and my best freind of 40 years both called Karen.

My mother had 3 close friends named Barbara and I was forever getting confused when she was relaying stories about them.

Ameliepoulainandthephotobooth · 06/03/2025 21:02

I work with four Katherine/Catherines. They all go by their full name and initial at work.

We also have family who brother and sister, Mork and Mindy (obviously an example) married people called Mindy and Mork.

I can't join in! My now ex h has nine cousins who in turn have nineteen children and four step children. Not one duplicated name.

Sisters-in-law not sister-in-laws. Like courts martial.

Or passers by.

The Karens and Debbies and Jackies (and the Susans before them) come from a time when the UK was much less culturally diverse, and people travelled less

I feel like there was much less diversity in names than there is now

Child of the '60's and a ridiculous number of women my age have my name. Fully a quarter of my German set at school had my name. We used to sit in a row for a laugh!

Stickthatupyourdojo · 06/03/2025 21:14

My friend has a brother with the same name as her partner and my husband. Her sister and her sister in law have the same name as me.

bellocchild · 06/03/2025 21:14

It's fashion. In our year group of 60, there were 5 Susans, 3 Jennifers, 2 Brionys, 2 Beverleys, and 2 Anns. They were distinguished by the first letter of their surnames, no bother.

waltzingparrot · 06/03/2025 21:20

5 people worked in the office at my last job. We all had a partner called John.

hazelnutlatte · 06/03/2025 21:28

There are 15 kids in my daughters year at school. 4 of the mums are called Catherine. 2 of them have almost the same surname (1 letter different)

TheEllisGreyMethod · 06/03/2025 21:30

My cousin and SIL both have the exact same full name. And live about two villages away from eachother.

In my secondary school form of 24 girls, we had:
2x Amys
2x Jessicas
2x Lauras
2x Samanthas
2x Rachels

Ah yes but that was likely ‘the great name shortage of the 1980’s’. It was a tough time for our parents, there were just not enough names to go around. Every second girl had to be called Alice or Sarah. It was practically the law.

DoYouReally · 06/03/2025 21:43

I have a friend who dated 5 lovely nurses called Sarah over 20 years.

He is now married, to less than lovely, non nurse, called Louise.

There was a long time where they were referred to as "Dave & Nonsarah" when they weren't around.

SuziQuinto · 06/03/2025 21:46

In a few years it'll be Wrens and Teddys.

RosesAndHellebores · 06/03/2025 21:48

There were 11 girls in dd's reception class in the early noughties: six shared two names.

Haha yes good spot!I was born in 1988 😁I was the only girl in the entire school with my name. Eccentric parents!

I am surrounded by Steves. If I ever write a book about my life, it shall be called 'The book of Steve'.

RedCatBlueCatYellowCat · 06/03/2025 22:28

My son's prep school class. 4 of 5 boys all had the same name.

drspouse · 06/03/2025 22:29

We used to have a friend called Chris who had both a brother in law and a sister in law called Chris. I think his wife (who was not called Chris) or one of the in-laws might also have had an in-law called Chris.

DontCallMeKidDontCallMeBaby · 06/03/2025 22:35

My mam, my step-mam, my father-in-law, and his wife (husband’s step-mam) all have an older sister named Sue.

ignatiusjreilly · 06/03/2025 22:43

I had 5 Davids in my small class at primary school (Wales). We called them by their surnames instead.

Two of them had the same surname, so we had to use their middle names!

I used to share a house with three Annes. When I moved out another Anne moved in.

This was in the 80s-90s. All the Annes would be late 50s now.

Given my experience this morning, someone will sarcastically ask you if correcting the error made you feel better!
I'm thankful you did!
