Thames Water bill today astronomical

Anyone else had a water bill today? I've made an appointment to have a water meter installed as I was aware it would be going up but get this: £98.12 a MONTH they want. Modest 2.5 bed flat.

They've stripped the company bare for years and paid dividends and bonuses whilst polluting the environment and now they want £100 a month.

I'm sure there'll be lots to say I should have got a meter previously but there were reasons I didn't and I was ok paying a bit over the odds but this is just ridiculous.

Sick of corporate greed I really am.

Poor people the world everywhere paying for EVERYTHING and the rich getting richer.

MiniMaxi · 05/03/2025 19:32

Same for us - ridiculous

babasaclover · 05/03/2025 19:33

It all needs to be clawed back. They didn't 'have' the money for the profits and dividends they shouldn't have been paying them out. It's disgusting.

Lonelycrab · 05/03/2025 19:34

Share holders need their dividend Wink

Crunchymum · 05/03/2025 19:34

Mine went from £67 to £92. I too have booked an appointment to have a meter installed.

Sparsely · 05/03/2025 19:35

£3 a day for drinking water, shower water and sewage. If you compare the costs with other essentials (food or electricity or council tax or phone/internet), I don’t think that’s too much.

Yep, in this country big companies can do almost anything with NO consequences! Fine them!? Yeah, great. They just pass those fines on to us. It's the little people who are almost totally powerless.

Utterly sick to death with it.

Pebbles16 · 05/03/2025 19:38

We had a water meter installed a couple of years ago. Made a huge difference.
I do wish the government would take over Thames Water as they are dreadful

It's not the cost per se. It's the huge increase. Many people don't have the extra £30 a month when everything else has gone up as well .

PencilsInSpace · 05/03/2025 19:41

That's a lot. I'm also with Thames Water, 2.5 bed terrace and they want £52/month which is still a huge increase on last year.

I've been putting off getting a meter and I don't think I can have one anyway because our ancient plumbing is a bit weird - I have a stopcock under my sink which switches off our water and next door's!

Huckleberries · 05/03/2025 19:41

I have a water meter and I have been told it will probably go up approximately £16 a month.

The way they have run, the place is a complete con. I honestly hoped the labour government would take over the company as soon as they got in. But it doesn't seem to be on their list at all.

SleepingisanArt · 05/03/2025 19:45

Not your area but our bill has increased by over 80% (we have a meter and our usage has actually dropped). Wrote to our MP as they should not be allowed to make such huge increases when the service is dire (hosepipe bans plus a nearby area went 4 weeks without any mains water).....

MrsPeregrine · 05/03/2025 19:45

This all feels like the water companies have seen how much the gas and electricity companies have been allowed to get away with increasing their prices and are now wanting a slice of the pie. It’s greed. I thought Labour were going to take action on this kind of profiteering when they got into power.

CeeJay81 · 05/03/2025 19:52

We are not Thames water but ours is a simular price!! They've told me cause we have more people than bedrooms(4 in a 3 bed), it may not be worth it. I've changed my payments to be paid over 12 months, so it seems more reasonable. It's getting beyond a joke, trying to find money for all the crazy bills

Mom2255 · 05/03/2025 20:19

Corporate greed. Who is it allowed?

FruitPolos · 05/03/2025 20:24

Mine has gone up 27% and I live in the Lake District where there's no shortage of water.

I'm not on a meter so I'm tempted to try and use as much as possible just to be petty.

VexedofVirginiaWater · 05/03/2025 20:29

I'm in the North West, so with United Utilities, and mine went up by £20 a month to £92. I checked back, and in 2020 I was paying £60 a month. This is a four bed house. I had a water meter fitted last week and for now they are charging me £32 a month, but of course they haven't read it yet. I am expecting it to be more than that, but hopefully not as much as £92. Obviously they just want everyone on water meters so they are making it not worth paying the charge when they work it out from your rateable value.

Mom2255 · 05/03/2025 20:30

It’s just sickening when all those dividends and bonuses have been paid out. It’s not affordable at all. Disgusting company.

It’s not water shortages which are the problem - it’s their terrible management and investment in infrastructure.

RoachFish · 05/03/2025 21:10

That’s insane. Just as a comparison, I’m in Sweden, 3 bed house, 2 adults and I pay roughly £25 per month (but I pay annually). I lived in the UK up until 3 years ago and remember paying around £60/month which I thought was astronomical.

Mellap · 05/03/2025 21:29

In Yorkshire my bill is under £30. What causes the disparity, does anyone know?

Zingy123 · 05/03/2025 21:31

Just had our bill £85 a month. Up £30 a month on last year's.

Aliceisagooddog · 05/03/2025 21:31

Yes we had huge Thames water bill. It includes a 43% increase in charges for 2025, insane....

Miley1967 · 05/03/2025 21:33

My brother was telling me at the weekend that his has risen from £1200 to £1600 a year( lives outside of York ) I was shocked. Ours is around £70 a month currently but I'm worried about a big increase ( severn trent )

loafnest · 05/03/2025 21:43

Mine has gone up from 24 to 33 pounds a month for a 2 bed flat (Thames Water). Cheaper than usual as I'm on the Watersure scheme due to a disabled child. Definitely check if any of the schemes apply to your household.
