Thames Water bill today astronomical

Anyone else had a water bill today? I've made an appointment to have a water meter installed as I was aware it would be going up but get this: £98.12 a MONTH they want. Modest 2.5 bed flat.

They've stripped the company bare for years and paid dividends and bonuses whilst polluting the environment and now they want £100 a month.

I'm sure there'll be lots to say I should have got a meter previously but there were reasons I didn't and I was ok paying a bit over the odds but this is just ridiculous.

Water bills are taken over 8 months traditionally. I like having the 4 months' "extra" cash as they're around Christmas, but if it helps you can ask your water company to do them over 12 months.

LoveBluey · 05/03/2025 22:16

Ours has gone up 55% this year. It's outrageous they can do that and as it's a monopoly we have no choice but to pay. Unlike gas and electricity you can't shop around and switch providers.
Ours is wastewater only as well so we cannot reduce the bill by using less water as there's no option to be billed on metres use. Just have to suck it up and pay it.

madaffodil · 05/03/2025 22:42

3-bed house, 2 adults, normal usage and we are on a meter. We got a bill from Anglian Water two days ago and it is just over £100. Not per month - for a quarter.

It’s not working on the Thames Water site currently. It gives you the same monthly payment for 12 months.

OhamIreally · 06/03/2025 06:15

I should have said it was £71 per month now gone up to £98.12. 38% increase.

The water dividends are disgusting. I would rather have nationalised water and have the reinvestment than pay these unjustifiable dividends to shareholders.

Disposableusername54 · 06/03/2025 06:24

And, after I ran up a huge amount of credit and refunded £700they put mine at £15pcm and I can’t increase it! I should be about £60!

LostMyLanyard · 06/03/2025 07:37

It's criminal how something as basic as water supply is a 'postcode lottery'!

I'm old enough to remember when all utilities were privatised (thanks to the conservative greed of Thatcher and Major!)

The promised 'level playing field' and 'fair for all' rhetoric never materialised, and prices increased massively almost from the get-go...which was obvious to anyone with half a brain!

Moonlightstars · 06/03/2025 07:44

England is then only country in the world (stupid enough) to have it's entire water system privatised.

It was one of the many things the Conservatives have done that have made this country worse. It's a ridiculous state of affairs.

That anyone should profit from water is ridiculous. That it has been allowed to get into this state while giving away our money to shareholders is disgusting.

It’s a fight to get them to change your repayments.

Superhansrantowindsor · 06/03/2025 17:52

As water is essential for life it should not be a run for profit business.

XiomarasHandbag · 06/03/2025 17:57

My company was forced to move from Thames Water to Castle Water a few years back (I think they sold their commercial side of things to them) and since then the bills have tripled, and the customer service is even worse. And you have to pay to have a meter installed. I'd rather have Thames Water back, and that's saying something.

We halved our Thames Water bills at home though by getting a meter, so hopefully that will be the same for you OP.

My brother was telling me at the weekend that his has risen from £1200 to £1600 a year( lives outside of York ) I was shocked. Ours is around £70 a month currently but I'm worried about a big increase ( severn trent )

Edited

I'm also with severn trent, mine was around 70 a month for 8 months, just had my new one through and it's now 87.50

I'm in the North West, so with United Utilities, and mine went up by £20 a month to £92. I checked back, and in 2020 I was paying £60 a month. This is a four bed house. I had a water meter fitted last week and for now they are charging me £32 a month, but of course they haven't read it yet. I am expecting it to be more than that, but hopefully not as much as £92. Obviously they just want everyone on water meters so they are making it not worth paying the charge when they work it out from your rateable value.

Just got my United utilities bill for a three bed, small detached house in the NW. It's 956 quid a year! Last year we lived in a two bed terrace, and it was 380. I mean, I expected a rise for a slightly bigger house but bloody hell. It also says on the bottom of the letter, if you live in a house with more than three people it wouldn't save money to go to a meter (there's four of us).

Mom2255 · 15/03/2025 09:50

Mine is also £960 with Thames Water for a small 3 bed semi. I queried a water meter but said no, after researching more. They came into our property without permission and fitted one anyway and now claim everyone in our area has to have one. I can't think they have a single happy customer.

Tumbleweed101 · 15/03/2025 10:05

Mine has had a similar jump with Anglian Water. £76 to £94 per month.

3 bed semi and not on a meter. 4 people - me, my 23yo, 19yo and 15yo so I’m not sure it would be cheaper on a meter right now with so many teens!

getahhtmapub · 15/03/2025 10:05

Try living on tank water (NZ) so we rely on whatever falls from the sky. Free water! Except not when it hasn’t rained for 3 months. We had a delivery of 10k litres today. It gets pumped from the water table, transported in a lorry and pumped into our house tank. £300. That will last about 4 weeks if we are very very careful.
already have another booked for 3 weeks time!
makes it about the same cost over the year as UK reticulated water!

Donotgogentle · 15/03/2025 10:08

It’s an absolute failure of regulation.

If you’re going to have a for-profit provider of essential utilities they need to be strictly regulated.

Previous owners of Thames Water took out lots of debt, gave lots of profit to shareholders and customers are now facing huge bill increases. Current shareholders are also facing big losses.

Our bill is now £1029 pa for a family of 4, huge increase over the past 4 years. Really angers me.

LittleMy77 · 15/03/2025 10:08

Yorkshire Water here and ours has gone up £256 this year! It’s bloody farcical

DancefloorAcrobatics · 15/03/2025 10:12

Water, Gas & Electricity- they know we can't be without it!
Ours gone up 28% ... but at least Council tax is only up by a fiver.

Galliano · 15/03/2025 10:15

Mellap · 05/03/2025 21:29

In Yorkshire my bill is under £30. What causes the disparity, does anyone know?

In Yorkshire too and mine hs just gone up to £98
if you are on a meter it depends how much you use
if you are on water rates it’s related to the size/value of your property

Game0fCrones · 15/03/2025 14:39

This is why I'm on a meter.

Mine's £17 a month.

I’m in the same boat. Same company and same amount. We only have 3 people in a 3 bed house but big garden so lots of plant watering. So unsure about a meter. Think Martin Lewis says if more people than bedrooms stay on rateable value. If more rooms than people then move to a meter. I don’t know about if the same amount of people or how much gardens add to usage!

OhamIreally · 15/03/2025 17:14

For those saying it’s over 8 months mine is over 12 so almost £1200 per year. They came out this week and said they can’t fit a meter because of the pipe work but now I’ll be put forward for a household tariff so for PP who thinks they won’t be able to have one it’s worth booking the appointment as they said it should reduce significantly.
