When my daughter was about six I would reiterate to her that it's important to tell the truth.

So we went to the cashier in the supermarket. My daughter looked at her and said "why have you got such bad teeth"?

I wanted the ground to open up!

Anyone got any similar stories?

Ds was about 5 and with dh in the van at McDonald's drive thru, ds asked dh why the lady at the window was so fat, just awful !! 😳

canisestinvia · 05/03/2025 06:30

Well, according to my 11yo, grey hair really suits me. Apparently, some people with grey hair look too young to have grey hair.

Our neighbours are awful but we still say hello to them to keep some semblance of neighbourly relations and if I'm honest, in the hope that if we come across friendly and we don't sweat the small stuff they take the bigger stuff seriously when we do talk to them about it (which to be fair, has worked so far). Walking back from school and I said hello to him as we walked past. My son pipes up "why do you say hello when they're not nice people?" Blush to be fair it was a good question and led to quite a good conversation with him about diplomacy and the difference between being a doormat and making life difficult for yourself etc but I wish he waited until we had at least cleared their driveway Grin

Our family went to an outdoor museum and as we were looking at the pieces inside one of the settings my 5 year old son walked around pointing at various things and listed them, "cup" "chair" and then loud as anything pointed to the museum staff and said "big fat man". He heard and he knew. Awful.

Maybe I need a child to say that to me. It might give me the incentive to start my diet again! 😊

My older one had chicken pox age 4 and had been spotty for weeks. When he was on the mend and allowed out again, he pointed to a poor teen with acne on the bus and laughed and said "he has what I had! Look at his spots!"

The poor child and I were both mortified. So was my DS when I explained that he'd probably upset the older child. Since then we've had a rule that we don't comment on the personal appearances of others in public - spots, missing teeth, scars, weight - as it might upset people. It helps that I am slightly overweight and I've explained to DS that although Mummy is going to try to go running more and eat more greens, she'd still be upset if someone pointed and said "That lady's fat!" in public. Actually it wouldn't bother me in the slightest but he doesn't need to know that 😂.

3 year old as a cyclist went past.. look mummy there's a twat! all because thats what daddy called them all the time :)

Disturbia81 · 05/03/2025 12:22

One of the trickiest chats I've had with my kids is explaining that they should tell the truth but not with certain things, they should tell white lies to be kind.. it got confusing 😂
No wonder people with autism struggle, so many nuances in daily life!

I can see how that happened!

My 7 year old keeps telling me, matter of factly, that it still looks like I have a baby in my tummy. I gave birth 3 weeks ago and ^had thought my stomach had shrunk a lot 😂 apparently not!

LetMeGoogleThat · 05/03/2025 14:34

Standing in a queue at Boots, elderly lady in front and my 5 year old mucking about. Me - Be careful, don't bump into that lady. Him - She's really old mummy, nearly dead.

Fml!

Dontlletmedownbruce · 05/03/2025 14:38

I'll never forget one day I brought DD swimming. We passed a man with a big beer belly 'Mum look that man has a baby growing in this tummy!' and then later in the changing room when a slim woman with cropped hair came in 'Mum, is that a man or a lady?'.

As I'm typing this I'm thinking these are probably not at all surprising anymore 😄Life has changed since 2016

Dontlletmedownbruce · 05/03/2025 14:39

DS asked an older woman why she had so many cracks in her face.

FusionChefGeoff · 05/03/2025 14:42

@LetMeGoogleThat

Loving 'nearly dead'

I'm going to try to get that adopted in our circle for a description of how old / worn out / broken something is.

When my son was little, we were in town trying to stay out of the house whilst my miserable ex husband was sleeping off night shift.

We ran to the lift which had just opened and which had one older woman in it.
This woman looked the other way and didn't keep the lift door open for us.

I got there just in time and put my hand in the door which opened it for us.

We stood in the lift, me trying not to glare at this woman....but My son ( must have been about 4 at the tine) looked at me and then looked at her and said loudly "that woman is a silly arse ~!"

She got out at the next floor, and I dissolved into laughter..... yes he shouldn't have said that, but it was only what I was thinking.

Yes my DS has shouted 'look Mummy, the fat Controller" whilst going through his Thomas the tank engine phase !!!

skipdiddyskip · 05/03/2025 14:51

We have our second baby due soon. My 3 year old loudly announced to her toddler group the other day that "my baby sister is coming soon and she is going to eat milk from my mummy's boobies!".

We'd had a bit of a chat that morning about how babies were fed.

MrsMoastyToasty · 05/03/2025 15:00

I had to take DS to a slimming world group as I had no childcare. He went around the group saying "You're fat", "you're not fat", "you're very very very fat" as his 4yo/autistic mind deemed correct.

whycantibeselfishforonce · 05/03/2025 15:01

My DS was about 2 and I'd taken him out for a burger. He was sitting in a highchair and a very large gentleman walked past. DS shouted
'He's a fat belly' Had no reaction from the gent - thankfully but I was mortified! tbf it was a very fat belly!

MoodEnhancer · 05/03/2025 15:03

When aged 4 or 5, my DD told my MiL her breath smelled really bad. To be fair to DD, it did!

kwetu · 05/03/2025 15:09

Many years ago husband was waiting in a queue with our then 3yo DD when a lady came over and bent down to say hello. DD's response was BIG BOOBIES. husband never returned to that pharmacy or indeed anywhere alone with the little one for quite some time.

Youagain2025 · 05/03/2025 15:10

When ds was little around 4 he couldn't speak well . He were on the bus he kept walking about wanking car... turning out he meant racing car

HealthAnxietyReallySucks · 05/03/2025 15:13

When my son was little, my friend and I were talking about the need to get serious about losing weight. He said ‘it’s ok mummy you don’t need to lose weight, you both need to just be less fat”
😂
