When my daughter was about six I would reiterate to her that it's important to tell the truth.

So we went to the cashier in the supermarket. My daughter looked at her and said "why have you got such bad teeth"?

I wanted the ground to open up!

Anyone got any similar stories?

Why do you need other people’s stories about this? Just search for the last few hundred times this has been posted, usually as an excuse for fat-bashing or racism. 🙄

This makes no sense ? She wasn't telling the truth she was asking an inappropriate question & you could have told her to stop/moved her on/apologised to the cashier & walked out

Somehow anyone out running has missed the bus - think it came from my Dad when the children were toddlers & it's become a family wide phrase.

Tellingly noone in the family runs.

MrsFrumble · 05/03/2025 15:44

It’s quite simple really; as soon as you start teaching them about the importance of honesty, you also start teaching them that making unsolicited comments on people’s appearance is rude and inappropriate. Even my autistic child got that.

OP, your daughter’s “honesty” would only have relevant if the cashier had asked her what she thought of their teeth.

Buying a few odds and ends at the local shop on Saturday, the cashier was engaging with DS (6) about various things. She said, "I've worked here for a long time".

DS : "Hmmm, about 70 years??".

She looked about the same age as me. 😂

diddl · 05/03/2025 15:51

So how old is your daughter now if you told her to "tell the truth" when she was six?

Too old to just be blurting out unwanted opinions?

Ds was about 5 and with dh in the van at McDonald's drive thru, ds asked dh why the lady at the window was so fat, just awful !! 😳

Same here. In a queue at the airport. Lady was not pleased and stared daggers at me. I shrugged my shoulders as DS stated fact.
However, we did tell him that it was unkind to call people fat. We were at the time living in Asia so he was not used to seeing fat people.

What difference does it make what age she is now?

She was six then she did it!!!!!

That could apply to many threads on MN though. Eg I wish people would do this before starting yet another thread (of the same posters) about stay at home mums…

Sitting on the bus, son loudly told the bus that he couldn't wait to have a circle in his hair like the Mister in front. Not sure the bloke wanted his bald patch pointing out though.

I had to take DS to a slimming world group as I had no childcare. He went around the group saying "You're fat", "you're not fat", "you're very very very fat" as his 4yo/autistic mind deemed correct.

That's not even close to amusing. After the first "you're fat" or whatever, why did you not stop him?

Agree with this.

A while back, a neighbour's kid asked my DP "why are your teeth gold?" when he was on medication which made his teeth slightly yellowed.
But always nice to see these threads where publicly humiliating random strangers is brushed off as cute.

I can see how that happened!

It was very unfortunate. I think the poor child was very embarrassed and I felt terrible for him. Adolescence is difficult enough without comments like that. I'm afraid I now come down very hard on breaches of the "no comments on others' personal appearances" rule, since even innocent comments are capable of causing a great deal of unnecessary hurt and upset.

I was thinking that. No way I would have let that bloody happen and that's speaking as a family with lots of experience with special needs. Got to take some responsibility and I would have quickly redirected to something else!
