double bed to share between two kids

marsunin · 04/03/2025 16:24

Would you do it (safety rails will be added)? Is there any way to partition the bed with some kind of separation to make it better for them?
Found a flat for rent that we like but it's got a double bed in the kids' bedroom and the landlord can't remove it.

1 year old girl
3 year old boy

Thank you

Sorry, i made a typot in my post. I mean there's only a double bed in the bedroon. Because it belongs to the landlord, I can't get rid of it, unless I replace it with a similar one before we move out maybe

No I really don't think it's realistic to have a double bed as the only option.

I think you need the option where they can have single or bunk beds personally

CrickityCrickets · 04/03/2025 16:36

It's fine. They're not 13 and 10! Maybe use sleeping bags for a year or two though to give separate space and so duvet doesn't go over little one's head (although minimal risk age 1)

JimHalpertsWife · 04/03/2025 16:37

Do they currently have separate beds?

SackChute · 04/03/2025 16:38

I don’t think I’d be happy for a for such a young child/children to sleep on a used mattress at all tbh.
There is a higher risk of SIDS when using second hand mattresses, and it could be harbouring any kind of bacteria.

AnSolas · 04/03/2025 16:38

CrickityCrickets 2 independent covers or they will fight over the one duvet just because its there 🤷‍♀️

I can't see that they've said it's a 'used' mattress!

JimHalpertsWife · 04/03/2025 16:40

It's a furnished home so the furniture will have been used by the previous tenants.

B2210 · 04/03/2025 16:40

why cant the landlord remove it? If they refuse can you store it somewhere or get of rid of it and buy a new one before you leave? If you’re planning on being in this place awhile
its not feasible to have them share surely?

SackChute · 04/03/2025 16:42

If it’s part of a furnished place then, from experience, it’s unlikely to be new but would be pleased to be proven wrong.

marsunin · 04/03/2025 16:49

I didn't think about it being second hand. I think I will dismantle it and try and store away the bed frame, and just replace the mattress before we move

See if you can store the mattress behind your own headboard or under your bed.

Little one in a cot/cot bed and 3yo in the double is the other option. Ours were both in an IKEA junior bed to age 5.

I wouldn't use it, nor would I expect my kids to sleep on a mattress that any number of people could have slept on!! (Yes hotels etc, blah blah blah, not the same as bed at home!)
I would get rid of it and replace with bunk beds, if you have somewhere to store it then even better.
Just out of interest why does the landlord insist on keeping the bed?

marsunin · 04/03/2025 16:58

They sound a but strange tbh. If they can't store it surely they can get rid of it.....how many different tenants do they expect to gratefully sleep on their shitty bed?
Is it a super posh one or a bog standard argos double?

IBloodyLoveMyBlanket · 04/03/2025 17:04

A tip if you're going to store the mattress underneath your own bed is to put a fitted sheet on it, so that when you take it back out again at the end of the tenancy you're not trying to clean a very dusty mattress. Or if you need the space under the bed to store the dismantled frame, do a double decker mattress, Princess and the Pea style, by putting it underneath the one you're sleeping on.

The bed, but I've usually seen new mattress in rentals.
