Apart from World of Wedgwood ( already booked) what should a 3 generation group of adults ( the most elderly of whom doesn't walk too far) do/visit and where should we eat this weekend? Staying in Hanley, breakfasting at hotel.
Thank you

The canal round Stone is a pleasant walk to. There's an M&S cafe with a canalside terrace, and the Mexican restaurant up the hill is decent.

Jodrell Bank is well worth a visit if you have a car. The exhibitions have recently been redone and I thought it was fascinating.

Depending on interests of children and if you have a car with a bike carrier, DD has spent many happy hours on the Kidsgrove pump track.

Little Dumpling King in Hanley is immense

And reviewed by Jay Rayner.

There's a good sushi place in Stoke called Miso, but it's not walkable form Hanley unfortunately.

And it's mentioned in one of Richard Osman's books Wink

What is the Gladstone museum like? They are showing the Throw Down bird baths from Wednesday. It looks cobbly with lots of steep stairs. Is it?

Thanks

I thought that they were on display at the City Museum not at Gladstone? The Ciry Museum is a short walk from your Hotel Wink

WelshPool · 03/03/2025 17:28

If you can travel Peak Wildlife Park is brilliant, especially the Polar Bears!
Leek is always a nice wander, lovely old town. And absolutely Gladstone!

Restaurants, there is one called Pasta Di Piazza and has branches in both Newcastle Under Lyme and Stone. Gorgeous Italian place.

If you have a car I would suggest Little Moreton Hall. A National Trust property that is just lovely. It has an Elizabethan garden. About a 25 minute drive from Stoke on Trent.

Also Nantwich is lovely and 30 minutes away. Close to Hack Green Bunker, great day out.

It's lovely driving around and lots of good countryside views.

TinyMouseTheatre · 03/03/2025 17:30

And next time you visit think about the Manor House in Alsager. It's a 20 minute drive from the Uni and has a swim up bar Wink

Biddulph Grange is also worth a visit.

Toddlerteaplease · 03/03/2025 17:32

Biddulph Grange gardens are lovely.

Biddulph Grange is also worth a visit.

Yes my mum, toddler son and myself had a lovely day out there.

eccleshallmama · 03/03/2025 17:36

I think Biddulph Grange has several stairs just to access the gardens (unless that’s changed since I last went). I just noticed the OP is concerned about steps at Gladstone, but if that’s a concern, Biddulph Grange would definitely be out on accessibility reasons.

BoeufBourguig · 03/03/2025 17:36

Biddulph Grange is lovely but not great for anyone with limited mobility!

TwoRobins · 03/03/2025 17:42

Comefromaway · 03/03/2025 15:37

I'd have suggested Biddulph Grange but it is quite a way from Hanley/Barlaston/Trentham. (I live on the next road!)

However that also made me think. Leek is lovely, there is a little antiques market and lots of lovely cafes plus an art gallery where local artists exhibit and sell.

Yes, you're right. I moved away from Trentham a year or so ago. Must admit, this thread is making me nostalgic and slightly homesick!

We ARE staying at The Hilton.

One of the DC is at Uni in Stoke, hence the meet-up there.

We have previously tried Dumpling King but I don't think it'll be a good fit for the older relatives. Apparently there's a really good Chinese in Newcastle that does really good dim sum that might be more their pace but it's further than I'd like if we can get something nice closer. We need to eat on Friday too.

I'll look at Trentham more closely and check ticket availability for war Horse. Thanks

At Staffs or Keele? The grounds around Keele Hall are beautiful. Although not particularly flat

Maddy70 · 03/03/2025 18:23

Trentham gardens is nice but there is some walking involved. Hanley is awful.

There are some nice restaurants but use trip advisor

walterwhitesgf · 03/03/2025 18:28

Visit Stone. Not stoke on trent but next door. Beautiful little market town on the canal. Plenty of eateries including one that's in the Michelin guide.(little seeds) but plenty of other child friendly dog friendly places e.g. Bear , Bod, Wetherspoons and Maru Bento. Huge new play park opposite M&S. Aston Marina and The Fitzherbert Arms are my personal favourites for a meal

TinyMouseTheatre · 03/03/2025 18:28

Woukd the older relative be willing to be pushed in a wheelchair at Trentham. Their accessibility guide is here.

tillyandmilly · 03/03/2025 18:32

Derbyshire oatcakes are good but Staffs are better!

shapedlikeapear · 03/03/2025 18:39

If you have a car but don’t want to travel far, Newcastle is a good option. 5 mins away. Has a really nice Thai and Italian. There is an Afghani restaurant in Hanley that was on Radio 4. It was lovely, not very spicy.

purser25 · 03/03/2025 18:46

I really enjoyed a day at Stoke on Trent the people were lovely and went out of their way to help you. Oat cakes are a must the Emma Bridgewater factory especially the outlet section. I went to the art gallery and potteries museum very good. Some quirky things I loved the long line of cow creamer jugs all lined up in pairs. There is also a museum of the toilet.

puffylovett · 03/03/2025 19:17

There’s a wagamamas in Hanley just around the corner from the Hilton.
shopping on Festival Park isn’t too bad, or there’s the big M&S at Wolstanton.
other than that can only echo what everyone else has said about little moreton / Biddulph grange and kidsgrove pump track!

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 03/03/2025 19:20

My now x h took me to stoke on Trent for
Valentines because he wanted to watch football. Absolute shit hole.

SchoolDilemma17 · 03/03/2025 20:02

The Hilton in Hanley hasn’t got a pool. I meant this one. www.hilton.com/en/hotels/mandidi-doubletree-stoke-on-trent/
