Is it normal to forget every day words?

I'm not old (not young either) and I've noticed I forget common every day words. It doesn't happen daily or anything but it's fairly often. An example was today I couldn't remember the word sideboard when I was thinking about maybe getting rid of mine. About an hour later the word pinged into my head.

Is this normal? Should I worry? Is there anything I should do about it? No health conditions that I know about.

Totally normal for peri in your early 40s. You’re not as young as you think you are OP! I say that as someone in their 40s who is peri and does this all the time. I’ve been like this since late 30s.

I'm early 40's and have found in recent months my mind has just gone to mush sometimes! I'm pretty sure I'm in the early stages of perimenopause, il forget words, people names, if my husband asks me to bring him a cup of tea, il bring him coffee etc, I wonder what the hell is going on but from what I read I think it could be normal

Peri menopause turns your brain to mush. It's like baby brain for middle aged women.

It happens to me I blame menopause. I remember having a conversation with my work bestie one day and couldn't remember the word hailstone and saying that frozen rain that falls out of the sky 🤣

I forget famous peoples names And in fact couldn’t remember Colin Firth’s name while watching a movie of his the other day.

Another example: I keep forgetting Fran Leibovitz’s name. It’s become a thing. I try to think of ways to remember it. I think of Leni Riefenstahl (why a nazi filmmaker’s name comes more quickly to me I don’t know?), but then it pushes me to remember Annie Leibowitz (the photographer) and finally I land on Fran Leibovitz (the social commentator). It’s exhausting.

Also grandkids names - I can sit here and reel their names off no problem, but when referring to one in conversation I often come up blank. Their names do click after a few seconds though.

Sometimes I think the panic of not remembering prolongs the not remembering.

I’ve had lots of anxiety the past few years. Due to concern over the mental health of an adult child and so on. I don’t get enough sleep and that, combined with my age (60s), is the cause - I hope.

It happens to me too; early sixties!

I get stuck on the same words sometimes; one of them is impulsivity for some strange reason. 🤷‍♀️

I think it’s fairly common prior to and during the menopause.

Now I have to Google synonyms!

A doctor told me that it’s more worrying if you look at a pair of glasses or some keys and forget what they are for, or if you are walking, and keep losing your bearings.

I’m having this a lot at the moment - 52. I will say to DP eg “pop that in the fridge” when I mean dishwasher, or “I’ve booked lunch” when I mean cinema tickets. Immediately afterwards I know I have said the wrong thing. I’m on HRT but not sure it helps.

It's happening to me and I'm only 60, quite often I can visualise the word I want to say in my minds eye, but I can't get it out.I've been worrying about it a bit lately as it's becoming more frequent and with common words I use all the time .

This happens to me all the time, the word that comes to mind often has no resemblance to the one I've forgotten, also like another poster, i can't remember that spelling of really simple everyday words. A classic for me is that i often say or think the word cucumber when I mean umbrella. Why??!!

When I can't get the word I want, sometimes "potato" comes out instead,I've no idea why but it's always potato

Igmum · 03/03/2025 09:47

Hope it's normal because I do it all the time. I'm 60.

Wishimaywishimight · 03/03/2025 10:20

I'm mid 50's, happens occasionally. Recently went to order a hot chocolate with marshmallows, all I could think of was "mushrooms" rather than "marshmallows"!! (I didn't say it out loud though).

This happens to me sometimes - I'm 40.

Yesterday I couldn't remember the word "logburner".
