Fed up of getting up late every morning

Regardless of what time I go to bed, I can never get up in the morning on any day. I usually lie in bed until the very last point I can, which is 8.25am on a week day or sometimes 9.30am and then I roll out onto my home desk (in diff room). I hate how this makes me feel - sluggish and demotivated with zero energy. The other day I had to be at the local shop at 7.30am. While there, I saw school children who were at the shop on their way to school. Workmen in their vans, also on route to work. These people were up, ready and out at a time when I am usually struggling to turn off the alarm let alone getting up. There is a whole world of activities going on while I lie on bed wasting my life/time and feeling sluggish and crap for it.

I would love to be a 6am morning person. I could then do the gym, sort laundry, get ahead for the day. It would make me feel so much more energised.

But getting up is just so exhausting

I will have turned off around 5 alarms since 6am.
This is your problem! You're having interrupted sleep for an average of 3 hours a day.

You need to ease yourself into getting up that early.

Be realistic and prepared for it to take time seeing as what you're doing isn't working for you.

So start by setting your alarm for 8.15am.

When you've been able to get up a few days in a row set it for 8am and repeat. If at any time you struggle, forward your alarm by 15 minutes for longer until you're used to that time.

Well done OP this is such an uplifting thread!

I'm up at 530 each day (my husband gets up at 445 to swim and exercise before work!)

I have to leave the house at 7 am as school drop off is 720 (I live overseas). This means I'm in the office for 740.

I struggled a lot with this but then practiced acceptance and now love getting so much done and feeling I have purpose.

I am in bed by 830 with my book each night and lights out at 1030. Bliss!

Saturday - I enjoyed a lay in until 9am today. At 9.30am I decided to pop to the supermarket - before the daily rush - as some items had dropped off the shopping delivery due that morning. The supermarket was busy - At 9.45 ! Again, I was astonished to see people up, ready and checking out with a weeks worth of shopping by the time I had only just arrived. I hadn't even put my face on/washed/teeth as I was straight out to avoid the rush. How wrong was I!

Monday 7.45am - I snoozed all my alarms this morning and missed an early morning gym glass, despite being in bed and asleep by 9.30pm last night. It felt so good to go to bed/sleep so early. But feeling like I'm slowly retreating back to my old habits in the mornings. Jumped out of bed at 7.30am, dishwasher emptied and reloaded, logged on to work and currently keeping a watching brief on a work team chat wise while I spend 15 mins washing/teeth and basic face on and contributing to the chat while doing so.

Really annoyed with myself for not getting up earlier. I was awake on and off from 5.15am.

Another morning of snoozing the alarm. I am kicking myself as I got up for the bathroom at 5.30am. Why oh why did I just not get up there and then. No time for the gym or a home work out this morning before work, but I was at my desk with my face on for 7.45am and the dishwasher emptied. I'll take that as a win today.

I'm still following this as I'm so desperate to be an early morning person. I'm definitely finding it easier with the lighter mornings so I've made a mental note to buy a Lumie alarm clock for when Autumn rolls back around. I don't do so badly on my office days, I think it's because I just know I have to be out of the house. DH usually leaves me to lie in on my WFH days but I've decided he needs to stop doing that. He gets out of bed much easier than I do.

I think I'll have to draw the line at morning exercise for now as it's too ambitious. I struggle to exercise at any time of day! But I like the idea of getting started on the housework, cleaning the kitchen, etc.

@Fluffyc1ouds you've got this. Small steps. The alumie clock sounds good. I'm going to look into getting one too. Def get your DH on board with helping you get up. Keep us updated xx

Today I was in the office. I was suppose to get up and wash my hair at 5.45am ready for 7am office start. The hair task was was too much so I shoved it up and it looked OK-ish. I was in the office for 7.45am. A miracle for me !

an update - I've been away for 5 days with work. We were in a very posh hotel (thanks boss!) and I slept like a log every night, Bliss ! I woke up at 6am most mornings to watch the sunrise from the comfort of my bed and over a beautiful landmark. But I stayed in bed until 7ish. Several mornings I thought to myself 'I could just stay in bed all day' as the bed was super comfy. Back home late last night. Awake at 5.40am, up at 6.30am after phone scrolling 😖

Feel like the change of routine from being away has hindered my progress/broken my routine. Washing on, house in order (that's my kind of order, not DHs lol), sun is slowly appearing, it's hazy where I am. But it's 7.45 am and I have brought the office online. No face on, hair needs a good wash and I am back in shitty clothes. But I need to prioritise returning home and getting straight again.

Put your alarm clock across the room, so you have to physically move your body and can’t just snooze. As soon as you switch off alarm have a big drink of water and stretch your body.

Mel Robbin’s 5 second rule is worth a read/ listen to on Audiobook, she talks lots about this.

an update - I did it ! this morning I was up at 6am and in a spinning class at 6.20am. I booked it last minute last night, it's usually hard to get a space - it was fate ! Class done, Sainsburys shop done and home by 7.30. I loathe going to the supermarket when it's busy/during the day and try to avoid it all costs. People were there doing a full shop at that time !! I had a few things to get and was in and out. Showered, face on, nice body spray scent on. Still wearing my shitty home working clothes but I feel so awake and ready to face the day. Now I just need to make this a habit .....

Fab. I’m like you , really struggle to get up.
Always feel really good if I manage to get up.

myhorseforaring · 26/03/2025 16:37

An update - I'm still doing reasonably well getting up early. The sun makes it easier. This weekend the clocks go forward and it will be even brighter - LOVE IT ! Getting up earlier is def much better for my mental health. I live hearing the morning birds and I feel smug knowing I've done jobs/been to the supermarket etc first thing and the rest of the day is mine.

Roll on summer !
