Fed up of getting up late every morning

Regardless of what time I go to bed, I can never get up in the morning on any day. I usually lie in bed until the very last point I can, which is 8.25am on a week day or sometimes 9.30am and then I roll out onto my home desk (in diff room). I hate how this makes me feel - sluggish and demotivated with zero energy. The other day I had to be at the local shop at 7.30am. While there, I saw school children who were at the shop on their way to school. Workmen in their vans, also on route to work. These people were up, ready and out at a time when I am usually struggling to turn off the alarm let alone getting up. There is a whole world of activities going on while I lie on bed wasting my life/time and feeling sluggish and crap for it.

I would love to be a 6am morning person. I could then do the gym, sort laundry, get ahead for the day. It would make me feel so much more energised.

But getting up is just so exhausting

Now I've all on to start work at 9.30 in my spare bedroom! Just cannot get up.
On the odd occasion I have to be up snd out I have to plan as though it's a military operation."

@ethelredonagoodday

Exactly! On the day or two a month I go in for meetings I have to lay out my clothing, get bag ready and barely sleep for fear of oversleeping.

Yet I used to do it every day for decades without thinking!

Part of it is burnout. I'm nearly 62 and so over working, but can't really retire.

myhorseforaring · 04/03/2025 07:09

Day 2. Awake at 6.15 and up at 6.45am. I missed the sunrise. I've done some house bits and now for a home work out before heading into the office. Need to get office ready today. Fortunately I washed and dried my hair last night at 9pm. It was a chore at that time as it takes an hour to do and it's the v last thing I wanted to do at night. But glad I did it then rather than this morning. Need to be in the office for 8.30am. Dishwater emptied, washing drying. I've even got time to make breakfast!

It’s honestly a state of mind. You don’t miss a flight cause you didn’t want to get out of bed. Just force yourself for a few weeks and it will become habit.

myhorseforaring · 04/03/2025 07:20

@cait967 this has to become the new normal in the week day. Some of my friends have to be up at 5am and office ready every day. 10 minutes of my work out left then breakfast, get ready and start to cajole dc to get up.

Well done OP.

I always find the first few days of any new routine the most difficult. And here you are motoring through 😀

How do you feel in yourself? How did you feel during the day yesterday?

I am a naturally early riser as I live in another country as everything just starts earlier here. But as per pp I most certainly don't think myself any better than anyone who isn't. But, if it makes you feel better, then I say good for you.

soccermum10 · 04/03/2025 07:23

I hate getting up early, regardless of what time I go to bed. Unfortunately I have to because I have a child who needs to get to school and I start work at 8am.

Mumdiva99 · 04/03/2025 07:26

Wow just read all your posts. Well done on starting a new habit. You've got this!!!

myhorseforaring · 04/03/2025 07:26

@murphys I felt great yesterday for getting up earlier. It's a massive boost to my MH. Dragging myself out of bed, late, tired, sluggish is terrible for my MH.

On holiday, I'm up at 7am as I don't want to miss a thing. I've paid to be there, not to lay in bed wasting the time/day an ultimately my money.

I'm going to buy a book to read some of the early mornings at home. I can't remember the last time I brought a book. Also going to do adult coloring. Someone brought this for me a year ago and I've never used it. Loving the early morning sun, even it's it's chilly lol

Amazing progress OP! This is a great time of year to get into the habit of getting up earlier too, as the mornings get lighter.

For darker months, I echo what PPs have said: get yourself a sunrise alarm clock like Lumie. It changed the wake up process from stressfully jolting awake in the dark to snooze my phone, to gradually waking and rolling over to see what time it was. I almost never sleep through to the actual set alarm, the “sunrise” wakes me 95% of the time.

BitOutOfPractice · 04/03/2025 07:29

So so pleased to read your update. Well done. I’m a night owl and hate early mornings but like you I am retaining myself to get up so I can exercise. Just off to the gym now…

Tarantella6 · 04/03/2025 07:36

Well done OP 👏 fwiw I find snoozing the alarm the worst thing to do, my eyes don't open properly all day if I don't get up straight away.

Equally 6am is too early for me. I am most successful when the alarm goes off at 7am and I get straight up and out of bed.

Blondebrownorred · 04/03/2025 08:16

Love this. Well done op!

I had thyroid cancer last year and had my thyroid removed. I'm now on daily thyroid medication. I have been gradually losing my 'get up and go' for several years and it's now at peak.
Wfh means I see no one in the day, apart from maybe dh. I avoid the office as much as possible because 1) I've gained weight and 2) my hair looks shit on pretty much most occasions when I try to make an effort with it.

Sounds as if you need a thyroxine increase - do you have it checked annually?

HappydaysArehere · 04/03/2025 09:13

When the sun shines and it is warm you will probably find getting up much easier. Hope so as I have the same problem.

LaWench · 04/03/2025 11:53

You inspired me OP to get up 20m earlier and go for a walk in the sun with a podcast on before work. Feel so much better for it.

myhorseforaring · 05/03/2025 14:37

well done to everyone struggling but pushing through every day. @LaWench so pleased to hear you have been inspired ❤

Today I was up and downstairs ready for my work out at 7.10. Before starting work at 8.30am today I had emptied the drier and put away, emptied the dishwasher, swept the whole downstairs, put my face on, quick hair brush . Still shitty clothes lol - I am working on this.

I've been getting up later as the week has gone on. Today was the latest this week, but I am still up a lot earlier than I would have been, so I am def winning. I am jumping out of bed with a spring in my step and not bleary eyed, tired and sluggish. This is definitely the key to good MH for me.

I'm going to update the thread as regularly as I can, It will keep me accountable!

Today wasn't as good. I woke at 5.30am with terrible period pains and got up to use the toilet. I should have got up there and then but I fell back to sleep and snoozed my alarm many times, eventually getting up at 7.30am feeling groggy from being half asleep/half awake 5.30 - 7.30. I jumped out of bed at 7.30 and did a 30 min work out. Few house jobs and at my home office at 8.30 but still in my dressing gown. 8.45am and this was not acceptable. I then washed, teeth and put my face on. I need to do better. It's harder as the working week almost comes to an end. I've done a lot of exercise this week and feel great for it, even if the lbs have not shifted 😬

I am LOVING this. SO motivating!!

myhorseforaring · 07/03/2025 07:55

Today I am in the office. I woke up 4.20 with period pains and went to the bathroom. Again, I should have got up there and then. Instead, I snoozed the alarm until 6.45am and then jumped out of bed, Was supposed to have washed my hair at 5.30am this morning (It's an hour and half job) but I have shoved it up and made do. Face on, casual clothes for the office today. Feeling v demoralised today as I have worked really hard in the gym all week and put 3lbs on. But we did get takeout pizza last night and I had wine. I regret both.

Arrived at the office for 7.45am.

I must do better next week. The weekend is supposed to be glorious sunshine l I want to be up and about in the sunshine and cracking on with my never end to-do list at home.

You have done so well. Try not to let one bad day get you down.

You probably have water and bloat weight due to your period. Back in the day when I had periods, any weighing just before, during and just after didn't count in my book. And period pains never help anyone's mood either.

You have got this. Please keep updating as you have really inspired so many people. Good or bad day. Both are realistic in any new routine. 🌻

My dad had been in the military so there were no lay ins growing up. The door would burst open with dad saying “up up up up, feet on the floor, feet on the floor!” Even now I can’t just lay in bed I’m up by 7am at the latest. I do like a little siesta sometimes though but even then I’ll set an alarm for an hour. I don’t really know what to suggest except to put your alarm somewhere in the room so you have to get out of bed to switch it off.

myhorseforaring · 07/03/2025 08:52

@murphys thank you ❤ being in the office at 7.45am is unheard of for me. So I will take that as todays win 😊 I may not look as glam today for work as I wanted to be but I'm half decent and it turns out none of my team have actually turned up today, they have all decided to WFH !!!

MyDadLovedBlondieToo · 07/03/2025 11:18

Really fantastic progress OP! As you’ve noticed your energy levels dipping through the week and also being affected by your period, I’d adjust your alarm times to set you up for success. So maybe you set the alarm 30 or 45 mins later on Thursdays and Fridays, you’d still be up far earlier than you werebefore but without the snooze button guilt.

YourOnMute · 07/03/2025 11:58

Love reading this thread. Well done!
I'm a terrible morning person so you're motivating me. I find snooze buttoning the worst- if I just get up I feel much better.
Don't feel bad about the last few days; you're not having it easy waking up with pains. Be gentle on yourself

wavingfuriously · 07/03/2025 12:27
