princesspadam · 02/03/2025 11:05

Spent two mornings at breakfast in a hotel with people who are happy to share their entire life with the room

Honestly it's embarrassing and totally unnecessary.
Is this a new thing? Or am I old & cranky?

I’m probably loud but that’s because my husband is a bit deaf. Talking loudly to him has become a habit!

Well he needs a hearing aid then doesn't he? Rather than you just getting louder and louder to compensate, disturbing everyone else around you?

Oxgodby · 02/03/2025 11:15

Well, breakfast in a public place isn’t usual for most people, especially if you’re the type who is a bit zombified till they’ve had some food or caffeine, so could be a combination of them speaking loudly and your ears not being used to full-volume conversation till later in the day.

thinkfast · 02/03/2025 11:18

@FrannyScraps what an ignorant comment. Not all conditions that cause hearing loss can be fixed by a hearing aid.

Stop being so professionally offended. Looking for excuses why people shouldn't be courteous to other guests enjoying their breakfast.

It’s the instagram generation … they think everyone is interested in their lives. See also: the quiet coach on the train.

God, yes - and it’s everywhere. I wish we were like Japan where it’s frowned upon to talk loudly in public but there’s no social contract any more in the UK and we are worse off for it.

Forgive me Lord for I have sinned

Like everything else we've adapted to American culture. Loud, brash and proud.

imtherelala · 02/03/2025 11:47

Im not loud in doors but i can be loud out doors sometime i have to be.
I live in Thailand when it's busy its busy especially when i go to the market.

ScottBakula · 02/03/2025 11:51

Me and my DB went out last night and said the same thing , two people having a loud conversation on the other side of the road about 30 foot away and we could here them clearly .
The same when we went into a couple of pubs people sat next to each other but shouting even though the pub was relatively quiet .

I wish some people had a volume button

Cattery · 02/03/2025 11:57

Because no one gives a shit about anyone else anymore. It’s all me me me entitlement and lack of basic courtesy

NorthernSpirit · 02/03/2025 11:57

Many people have become so self entitled since Covid I think. Listening to phones on loud speaker so everyone else around them also has to listen to their absolute shite. Or holding the phone like a Kardashian on an episode of The Apprentice shouting into a phone in public.

I think it’s got worse since Covid. The sense of self entitlement has skyrocketed.

Just at a hotel myself and having to tolerate people listening to mobile phones on loud speaker at breakfast. It absolutely boils my piss…..

Voyager54 · 02/03/2025 11:59

It does not matter where you go these days cafes restaurants or hotels.

People are either trying to out shout or shouting down a mobile phone.

Manners went a long time ago.

It's been going on well before covid.

Oh god yes to the listening to stuff on phones without headphones!!!!!

These were not youngsters either, yesterday was a couple with their ASD teen where the mother spent half an hour reading out what his difficulties were for his college application
"So Harry I've written sometimes I find it difficult when plans change and this upsets me'
Etc etc, poor Harry having everything read out for all to hear.

Today was a woman in her 60s explaining to her friend that she wasn't going to settle for a man and was happy with her dog - to be fair I appreciated this sentiment but I don't need it shouted

I know someone who had a HR person discussing work for her entire train journey.

I think (some) people are way more performative than 30 years ago

Like everything else we've adapted to American culture. Loud, brash and proud.

If you have been to Morte Bay you know how long the beach is. You could land an A380 on it.

Some Americans were stood at the Putsborough end talking about how wonderful it had been building sandcastles that afternoon. We were at the rocks at the Woolacombe end - 2.05 miles away.

TheAmusedQuail · 02/03/2025 14:34

So many people love the sound of their own voice. And all this 'look at me' sh*t. No, mate. You're obnoxious and boring.

thinkfast · 02/03/2025 19:07

@FrannyScraps There's a huge difference between people who are loud and obnoxious (whether in real life or online) because they don't give a fuck about anyone else, and people who are loud because they are talking to someone with hearing difficulties or other additional needs. No one with a disability needs to use any kind of aid just to give you an easier life.

Completely agree. What is it with these loud speaker conversations, drive me insane especially on public transport.

taxguru · 02/03/2025 19:18

It's pure selfishness and self obsession. So many people are loud to draw attention to themselves and seem to want random strangers they'll never see again to know how important they are. Really weird. Like the performance parenting when the parent is constantly "name dropping" which posh dance school little Tabitha goes to, how many awards she's won, etc., when talking to her, so she'll already know where she goes and what she's won - it's just showing off to random strangers. Just no need for it. No wonder there's more and more people wearing noise cancelling headphones these days - it's the only way to get some peace and quiet from the noise.

SparklyBrickViper · 02/03/2025 19:22

The concept of indoor voices has been completely lost.

Went out for lunch a few months ago and there were two young women on a table the other side of the room who were so loud we ended up eating in silence I couldn’t hear much other than them.

People seem to think they are much more interesting then they actually are.
