Spent two mornings at breakfast in a hotel with people who are happy to share their entire life with the room

Honestly it's embarrassing and totally unnecessary.
Is this a new thing? Or am I old & cranky?

Completely agree. What is it with these loud speaker conversations, drive me insane especially on public transport.

Yup, recently on a train, and the woman a few seats away was on speakerphone to her daughter for about 30 minutes, the whole carriage could hear both sides of the conversation. We knew they were both teachers, we knew what subjects they taught. Their respective husbands' names and occupations. The other children's/siblings names. Lots and lots of irrelevant drivel. Constant running commentary as to where the train was, what the woman could see out of the windows, etc. And after 30 minutes of mind numbing boring drivel, it turns out daughter was at the station waiting to pick up the woman, so they could have had the conversation in the car on the way home without annoying around 30 people with their incessant noise.

Ooh, you remind me of being holiday in Greece recently, in a cafe when a British couple plonked themselves on the next table and then had a very loud 15min+ video call with their adult child and grandchildren. It was very annoying, why do it in a busy cafe?

I agree about the since covid thing. people having a loud conversation with someone on facetime or the like on the bus, train etc as if they're at home. I DON'T WANT TO HEAR YOUR CONVERSATION!! GET SOME FUCKING HEADPHONES!

Dom Joly's "Helloooo" character making a really loud phonecall in various public places, on Trigger Happy TV, is 25 years old now, which is pre-social media and pre-speaker phone. So rent-a-gobs are nothing new and since mobile phones became widely used around that period it's always happened. I suppose people like that used to stand out as being anti-social dickheads. Now it's just considered normal behaviour and wouldn't be worth satirising.
